Chapter 135: What Can’t Be Reproduced
Seeing a naked copy of myself standing in front of me was deeply uncomfortable. Mira disliked clothing, but Lionel and I managed to dress them once he had finished changing.
For someone normally covered in fur, ordinary clothes must have felt restrictive.
“I don’t like this.”
“Please endure it just for now, Mira.”
“Fine…”
They accepted reluctantly. Even if I made special clothes for them later, they might refuse to wear them.
Lionel asked why I had transformed Mira.
“Inside the egg, Mira communicated through something like telepathy. Since hatching, they can only say ‘kyu.’ I wanted to know whether they could still speak.”
I looked at Mira.
“Telepathy? I don’t know.”
“You don’t remember?”
Apparently, Mira had no memory of speaking from within the egg. Perhaps the telepathic connection had been a temporary ability left by the parent holy dragon to protect the child until hatching.
Maybe Mira would develop telepathy naturally when they grew older.
“Is there anything you want, Mira?”
“I want you to play with me!”
That wasn’t quite the long-term concern I had meant, but it showed they weren’t lacking anything important.
“Wait a little while. I’ll play with you properly after this test.”
“Kyu!”
I seated Mira safely and faced Lionel. We raised our wooden swords and began with a light bout.
I moved slowly at first so Lionel could study the unfamiliar body. Wooden swords struck again and again while Mira watched with shining eyes.
Gradually, we increased the pace. Lionel’s initial stiffness disappeared, replaced by smooth, whip-like movements.
“Your body is remarkably well trained, Lord Julius.”
“Is it?”
I mainly performed daily calisthenics, but perhaps they were more effective than I realised.
After about thirty minutes, Lionel called a halt. Both of us were drenched in sweat.
“I concede, Lord Julius. I have reached my limit.”
That was strange. If the potion reproduced my body, our physical endurance should have been similar.
“Perhaps the transformation doesn’t reproduce everything,” Lionel said. “I have your body, but I can’t use your magic.”
He couldn’t use my skills either. The physical form was copied, but mana, aptitudes and acquired abilities remained those of the person inside.
I had been using body-strengthening magic without consciously thinking about it, while Lionel had relied entirely on technique. No wonder he tired first.
“Perhaps I should be the decoy after all.”
“No, Lord Julius.”
Lionel rejected the idea immediately. If anything happened to me, he would bear the responsibility. I could no longer dismiss his concern.
“My turn!” Mira declared.
They had chosen the Japanese pronoun boku while speaking in my form. That was commonly masculine, but it didn’t settle Mira’s sex or gender; holy dragons had already been described as lacking a male-female distinction, and Mira might simply have been copying my speech.
Lionel handed them a wooden sword. Mira swung it by imitating us, delighted despite making little progress.
Their transformation lasted longer than Lionel’s even though they had consumed less potion. As expected, duration depended on the original body’s size.
While I was giving Mira a simple sword lesson, the door to the indoor training hall suddenly opened. Anyone could use the hall, so there was no requirement to knock.
The newcomers stared at the three identical boys.
“Ah.”
All three of us froze.
