Chapter 134: A Perfect Copy!
The knight who had brought the report sat on the office sofa, repeatedly comparing me with Lionel in my form. Despite the extraordinary situation, he decided to continue.
“A suspicious person appears to have learned that Lord Julius frequently visits Mount Claire. Several sightings have now been reported there.”
“So they took the bait,” Lionel murmured.
Apparently, the operation had already begun without my knowledge. Rumours about my regular visits had been spread deliberately.
“Why not arrest the suspect now?”
“We have no evidence of a crime. If the person is connected to another country, an unjustified arrest could become an international incident. We need to catch them in the act.”
The possibility of foreign involvement made everything more complicated. That was why they had created a believable pattern before moving.
“What does the suspect look like?”
“A merchant wearing ordinary local clothing. We know little else. The investigation is proceeding carefully so that the target doesn’t realise they’re being watched.”
“Continue. I’ll also place disguised knights among the workers at Mount Claire.”
The knight bowed and left. His face had remained strangely gentle whenever he looked at Lionel in my form.
Lionel coughed pointedly.
“He doesn’t normally look at me like that.”
“I know. Imagine what would happen if one of the female knights saw you.”
“I would rather not.”
About an hour after Lionel drank the potion, its effect finally began to fade. He returned to normal gradually rather than all at once, which would give him time to withdraw before his disguise completely failed.
“One spoonful lasts roughly an hour,” I said. “Two should cover a patrol of Mount Claire.”
At two spoonfuls a day, the bottle would last around thirty days. Surely the spy would act within that time.
“Next, we need to test how well you can fight in my body. We should use the indoor training hall, where fewer people will see us.”
Lionel agreed. I went to fetch clothing in my size while he prepared the hall.
On my way, I found Mira dozing in a sunny salon. Rosalia was apparently in lessons.
“Perfect timing, Mira. I want to conduct another small experiment.”
“Kyu?”
Perhaps the potion would let me determine how intelligent Mira currently was and whether they remembered speaking telepathically inside the egg.
When I reached the indoor training hall, Lionel had already prepared wooden swords and secured a private changing room.
“By any chance, are you testing the potion on Mira as well?”
“Only a very small amount.”
The household staff called them “Lady Mira” out of reverence for the holy dragon, although my family simply called them Mira.
Lionel reluctantly drank another spoonful and transformed. I sent him into the private room with my spare clothes.
Mira stared at the second Julius and produced a startled cry unlike anything I had heard before.
“It’s all right. That’s Lionel. The transformation potion only makes him look like me.”
“Kyu.”
“Now it’s your turn.”
“Kyu?!”
Mira spun around in alarm.
Because they were much smaller than Lionel, I gave them only a third of a spoonful. In an instant, Mira also took my form.
“Kyu!”
They examined their new hands and feet. Hearing my voice produce their usual cry was deeply strange.
“Mira, try saying something.”
“Kyu.”
“Use words, the way I do.”
“Words.”
“You spoke!”
“Spoke?”
The experiment had succeeded. At last, I could communicate with Mira directly.
I hugged them in excitement, although embracing a perfect copy of myself felt extremely peculiar.
