Chapter 121: End of Summer
With the end of midsummer, the temperature gradually began to drop.
Since the highest temperatures only reached around 30°C, it hadn’t been particularly uncomfortable, but the cooler weather was definitely welcome.
This world doesn’t have pollen, so spring and autumn are by far the most comfortable seasons.
However, with the approaching winter, autumn also brings a slight sense of melancholy.
“Sato-san, we’ve finished the harvest. Does that mean the summer vegetables are done for the year?”
“Yes. From here on, we’ll be switching to fall crops.”
With the season for versatile vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, and cucumbers coming to an end, it’s time for root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, burdock, and sweet potatoes to come into season.
Just like last year, crops in the skill-based field can be grown regardless of the season, except in winter. But regular fields must follow proper seasonal care, or growth will noticeably suffer.
“It’s kind of sad to think we won’t be eating summer vegetables again until next year.”
“If you really want them, we can buy them with Skill NP, so there’s no need to feel too down. Plus, fall crops are delicious too.”
“That’s true! I’m looking forward to eating autumn vegetables!”
As Sheila-san said, since the skill-based field is reserved for NP crops, we’ll be parting with summer vegetables for a while.
However, by dedicating the skill-based field entirely to NP crops, we were able to gain a large amount of NP over the summer.
Even though I splurged a bit on “summery experiences,” I still have 85,461 NP on hand.
I’ve also recouped the NP I spent on the entertainment room, so I now have plenty of freely usable NP.
“Also, Sheila-san, I’d like to consult with you again if that’s alright?”
“Ah, another strategy meeting, right? Of course, that’s fine.”
“Thank you. Then let’s do it after dinner today.”
With Sheila-san’s agreement, we decided to have a meeting after dinner to discuss how to use the NP.
I enjoy watching the NP accumulate, but I also really enjoy planning how to spend it.
Excited, I began preparing dinner.
—After dinner.
With pudding on the table, I sat facing Sheila-san.
“Feel free to eat the pudding whenever you’d like.”
“Thank you! So… we’re deciding what to spend the currency on, right?”
“Exactly. Just like last time, we have three main options: enhance skills, increase tamed beasts, or obtain more things from the other world.”
“Last time we expanded entertainment from the other world, so this time it should be a new tamed beast, right? Moji is incredibly helpful, but because of that, Lua-san has been showing up less regularly.”
That’s right.
Thanks to Moji’s exceptional help, we’ve been able to keep up with our usual workload, but the downside is I can’t really take breaks.
I’ve set a rule of working only eight hours a day and taking at least one day off per week. Still, due to the lack of manpower, I find myself in the fields every day.
Naturally, Sheila-san ends up coming with me as well.
Even though I tell her to take breaks, it’s hard to rest when your superior is working nonstop.
I know how that goes from my days at a black company, so I want to change that.
Just like Lua-san, I want everyone to have more freedom and flexibility. So, this time, adding a new tamed beast might be the best option.
“That’s why I think increasing our manpower is the way to go. Plus, I really want to expand the field and grow more exotic vegetables!”
“We won’t be expanding the field, but… like you said, let’s go with a new tamed monster this time.”
“We’re not expanding it!? Aww… that’s disappointing.”
Apparently, Sheila-san is more interested in increasing Japanese crops than getting a break.
Smiling at her slightly sulky expression, I asked the usual question—what magical creature she recommends.
“Recommended monsters? Let’s see… If we can tame higher-ranked species, I’d suggest either a High Sylph or a Dryad. Since the Cat Mage Moji has been such a huge help, I think another magic-type monster would be ideal.”
“High Sylph or Dryad, huh? I’ll look into them.”
I had been considering a Soil Sylph, but the High Sylph is probably an evolved form of that.
After researching both, they seemed like excellent options.
They both look almost human, and both cost 60,000 NP, which is within budget.
Tamed monsters are understandably expensive—after all, you’re adding a magical creature to your team.
Compared to Moji and Ash, who each cost 30,000 NP, it’s tempting to consider cheaper options, but in terms of ability, these two are definitely the better choice.
“It looks like I can tame either of them. Is it alright if I go ahead and pick one?”
“Yes, I think either one would be a great choice.”
“Alright then… I’ll go with the High Sylph.”
Since I had been thinking about taming a Soil Sylph already, I decided to go with the likely upgraded version, the High Sylph.
If I waited too long, I might hesitate to spend 60,000 NP, so I immediately went ahead and made the purchase.
