Chapter 16: The Morning After

In the end, while I understood the method of manipulating the magic flowing in the river, I couldn’t find a way to effectively utilize it, so we reluctantly returned to the inn.

As we were told that breakfast was ready, we headed to the same dining area as yesterday, where Aya-chan and Nina-chan, who had just woken up, joined us.

Nina-chan, accompanied by Irena-san, had very red eyes. She probably cried a lot after what happened yesterday.

“Are you able to eat, Nina-chan?”

“Yeah. I’m hungry.”

When I asked Nina-chan, she replied with half-asleep eyes.

I don’t know how yesterday’s encounter with the Ice Princess affected her, but if it made her feel better, then that’s a relief.

As everyone gathered and breakfast began, Nina-chan, who had said she was hungry, only ate a little grilled fish and then put down her chopsticks again. I don’t think it’s because the chopsticks are difficult to use. Nina-chan has been here for about a year now.

“Are you full already?”

When I asked, Nina-chan nodded slightly.

I was worried about that, so I pointed to the plate of apples.

“Do you want some fruit?”

“No, I’m okay.”

Nina-chan seemed genuinely disinterested in my suggestion.

Since she didn’t eat anything last night either, I don’t think she’ll feel full with just a little meal like this.

While thinking about that, I started eating my own meal.

I brought the fish to my mouth. I ate it. I swallowed it. As I ate, yesterday’s conversation came to mind. The story of the “Peach of the Immortal Realm.”

Just by eating it, it heals people’s minds.

…It must be true.

From Harunaga’s words yesterday, it didn’t seem like a lie.

The problem is how to get to the Immortal Realm.

Even Haruna doesn’t know the location… which means we’re stuck.

After all, Gifu is huge.

To say that the entrance is somewhere there… It’s like being asked to search for a sewing needle in a pool of water, it’s practically impossible. Well, maybe that analogy is a bit off?

Anyway, judging from Harunaga’s tone yesterday, the entrance must be near the magic swordsmith.

“Ah…”

While reminiscing about that, something occurred to me and I unintentionally let out a sound.

“What’s wrong, Itsuki-kun?”

“It’s nothing.”

Aya-chan, who heard that, asked with a curious expression.

I brushed it off and took a sip of water.

When we went to the swordsmith’s house yesterday… there, a peach tree was blooming.

I don’t know exactly when peach blossoms bloom.

I don’t know, but I know they usually bloom around spring. There’s no way they bloom at the end of autumn like this.

Then, what was that flower?

Maybe the swordsmith knows something about the Immortal Realm.

“Hey, Dad. Are we going to the swordsmith today?”

“…I wonder about that. It might end up being a repeat of yesterday.”

“But, don’t we have a plan?”

The conversation with my father on the way back from the swordsmith’s workshop yesterday indicated that he had a plan, so I assumed we were going there for the second time with that plan in mind.

“Ah, but the letter hasn’t arrived yet.”

“…Letter?”

“It’s a letter from Akane-san.”

Akane-san…? Ah, the letter.

“Why from Akane-san?”

“Well, Sensei has been demanding impossible things from us for a long time… When it gets too much, Akane-san scolds him.”

“…I see.”

From my father’s tone, I could tell that this wasn’t the first or second time something like this had happened.

In other words, is he the kind of person who reflects on being scolded by Akane-san?

He seems to be much older than her, so I can’t imagine that the old swordsmith would reflect just because he was scolded… Well, maybe he’s taking measures to receive the letter because he wants to reflect.

Come to think of it, it’s a common practice in large corporations to involve higher-ups when things don’t progress between subordinates, but since we’re a small company, the supervisor quickly intervenes due to a shortage of manpower… I reminisced about my past life nostalgically.

“Well then, what are we going to do until Akane-san’s letter arrives?”

“Hmm. I thought we could go sightseeing since we’ve come all the way from Tokyo. It seems a bit dull to stay cooped up in the inn all the time.”

Saying that, my father smiled with narrowed eyes.

It seems that my father’s plans were already communicated to Renji-san and the others in advance, as we quickly separated into Renji-san’s car and my father’s car right after finishing breakfast and set off.

By the way, Irena-san doesn’t have a car, so she rode in my father’s car.

I asked Nina-chan how she got to this inn if she doesn’t have a car, and she said she just took a taxi from the station. I wonder what kind of monsey sense she has.

If I were an exorcist, would I be able to use money like that… I pondered lazily, but I realized that none of those thoughts were relevant.

Irena-san is the kind of person who would come all the way from England to Japan for Nina-chan’s sake. It’s nothing out of the ordinary for her to take a taxi to a hot spring inn just for mental recovery.

With such thoughts in mind, I’m sitting in Renji-san’s car, in the middle row.

The reason I’m sitting in the exact same seat as when we headed to the swordsmith’s house yesterday is none other than because there are girls on both sides.

“Itsuki-kun, do you want something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine.”

Aya-chan takes out a fruit juice she bought at the shop.

But I just finished eating not long ago, so I’m full.

So, I decline Aya-chan’s juice, and Nina-chan on the left side looks a bit eager as she gazes at the juice.

“What about you, Nina-chan?”

“…Can I have it?”

“Of course!”

Nina-chan takes the orange juice and drinks it down.

It seems that she can consume liquids after all. It’s better than not being able to eat anything, but I’m still worried.

If we were to get the Peach of the Immortal Realm, would Nina-chan be able to eat it…?

Maybe it would be better to make peach juice with a mixer.

I should have properly asked Harunaga yesterday whether turning the Peach of the Immortal Realm into liquid juice would still have its effects… I thought as I leaned back in the moving car.
