Chapter 26: To the Rooftop

“…’Come To The Rooftop,’ I suppose,”

Nina-chan translated the English written on the blackboard.

I had no idea what it meant, so her translation was incredibly helpful. I thought to myself that I needed to learn “translation magic” someday. But for now, I pondered the meaning of the words.

There was no doubt that we were being invited, especially since there was no one else here to read the message. However, just because we were invited to the rooftop didn’t mean we could easily go there. After all, monsters were likely waiting.

“Itsuki, what should we do?”

“To the rooftop? We shouldn’t go there yet.”

Since we didn’t know what kind of monsters awaited us, it was best for us to make the first move.

However, that didn’t mean we needed to go directly. Because we didn’t need to, I clapped my hands. With a dry sound echoing through the classroom, two small fairies, about 5 cm tall, appeared before me.

They wore large hats and black boots and served as my eyes. They were the “Leprechauns.”

“Check out the rooftop.”

“”UGHHHH.””

The Leprechauns took flight from the classroom window, following the wall as they headed for the rooftop.

Since Leprechauns could share their sight among their kind, they could inform us of the situation in a distant place. They were like the fairy version of surveillance cameras.

As we waited for a while, watching the candles stuck in the cakes on the desks gradually burn lower, unexpected words came from the Leprechauns.

“Nobody. Nobody. Nothing here.”

“Huh? Nothing?”

“That’s right. There’s nothing on the rooftop.”

I thought it was absurd, but Nina-chan, who had been peering over my shoulder, spoke up.

“Is there really nothing there?”

“Nothing. Nothing.”

“But it says ‘Come to the rooftop…'”

Nina-chan said this while looking back at the words “Come To The Rooftop!” written on the blackboard. I didn’t have a smartphone or a dictionary, so there was no way for me to look up the correct meaning, but I trusted Nina-chan. After all, she was from England…

“Hey, Leprechaun. Is there really no one there?”

“Nothing. Nothing. Even an idiot could tell. If you’re curious, go see for yourself.”

I asked more questions, but the Leprechaun got angry and disappeared.

This guy… he’s too free…

There was no point in getting angry at someone who had disappeared.

With no other option, I, like Nina-chan, looked at the words on the blackboard once again.

“If there’s nothing on the rooftop, this message might be a lie.”

“That’s true. But if it’s a lie, wouldn’t it be strange for there to be nothing waiting on the rooftop?”

“There’s also the possibility of a trap, right?”

“If there’s a trap, I think the Leprechauns would have found it.”

I shook my head quietly.

While the Leprechauns behaved a bit freely, they generally listened to the requests of the exorcists who summoned them. So, if they said there was nothing, it was most likely not a lie.

Nina-chan seemed to understand that as well, as she furrowed her brows in thought.

“So, if there’s nothing on the rooftop…”

“Maybe we should…”

Perhaps there’s something else.

In this case, we can’t tell by staying here.

“Let’s go, Nina-chan.”

“Alright, let’s go.”

With monsters spreading throughout the school, there was no way I could let Nina-chan go alone. We left the classroom together and climbed the stairs.

I went first, with Nina-chan following behind.

Each step we took made creaking and groaning sounds, and it felt eerie that there were no other sounds besides ours, even though it was daytime.

As we crossed the third floor and headed towards the fourth floor, at that moment…

From below, we heard heavy footsteps approaching, and Nina-chan grabbed onto my clothes.

“Fi, fi, first one!”

At the same time as the deep, male voice came from below, a giant face peeked out from under the stairs. Probably, just the face was about three meters wide. Its chin was scraping the floor, and its hair was brushing against the ceiling.

Furthermore, behind that enormous head, there was a body that resembled a caterpillar, with countless human legs sprouting from it.

It was like a monstrous centipede.

“Something you can eat and eat, and it never decreases… What is it?”

I took a moment to think about the question and replied.

“Curry bread.”

“…Curry bread?”

The monster’s face displayed clear confusion.

It likely possessed considerable intelligence, possibly at the Third Rank or so. While pondering this, I began weaving my “Guiding Thread Silvate” with my right hand.

“Flame Bee! [Homurabachi]”

As I chanted the spell, the fiery spear I conjured pierced straight through the monster’s forehead and exploded, scattering its thoughts into chaos.

As I watched the colossal body slowly dissipate into black mist, I turned on my heel and pulled Nina-chan’s hand.

“Let’s go.”

“Y-yeah, that’s fine, but…”

With an awkward expression, Nina-chan grabbed onto my clothes and asked.

“Why was the answer curry bread in that riddle earlier?”

“Because it’s my favorite food?”

I couldn’t help but respond with a questioning tone to Nina-chan’s inquiry. There wasn’t any particular meaning behind it, and there shouldn’t be a need to seriously answer a monster’s riddle in the first place. That’s why I gave a casual response, but it seemed like Nina-chan was bothered by it for some reason.

“Was that riddle earlier about weight?”

“Huh? Uh, yeah, it might be…?”

Certainly, something you can eat and eat without it decreasing could refer to body weight.

But really, is this the time to be discussing that?

So, I brushed it off and proceeded to the fourth floor.

I didn’t know why, but there were no monsters on the fourth floor. Had they already been exorcised, or were we just lucky?

Either way, it was an opportunity we shouldn’t waste. I set foot on the stairs leading to the rooftop.

Our school had stairs that led directly to the rooftop. At the top of the staircase was an old aluminum door with frosted glass.

Like in any school, the silvery aluminum door had “Welcome!” written in childish red letters.

Even I, who didn’t understand English, could grasp the meaning of what was written there.

We were being invited.

“Let’s go, Nina-chan.”

“Okay.”

I extended my “Guiding Thread Silvate” towards the door and grabbed the knob. There might be magic that required direct physical contact.

So, I turned the knob and pulled the door towards me.

“…Huh?”

Instead of the rooftop, there was an amusement park.
