Chapter 97: Euchina’s Progress
After that, Owen and Bray discussed several other matters.
Bray would serve as the messenger to convey Bianshu Town’s intent to cooperate with the Caleb Holy Kingdom. Bishop Flynn also said he would write a letter to the Pope, vouching that the lord of Bia Town was someone trustworthy.
When they returned to the hall, the farewell banquet was nearly over, and the invited guests were gradually taking their leave.
As the hall grew emptier, Owen noticed that Theresa still hadn’t left. She was standing in a corner, lifting a finger to beckon him over.
Hmm? What could this be about?
Taking advantage of the fact that the servants were busy tidying up, Owen quietly walked over.
“Theresa, why are you still here?”
After making sure no one nearby was paying attention, Theresa asked.
“Lord Owen, I’d like to know about Euchina’s situation. You haven’t been neglecting her, have you?”
“How could I possibly neglect her!”
Owen widened his eyes slightly.
“Right now, Euchina is out there with her friend, taking part in the Spring Festival!”
Since the farewell banquet was being held in the castle, and to avoid exposing Euchina’s identity, Owen had sent her out with Lilica to join the festivities, asking Fanny to look after her. There shouldn’t have been any problems.
“Oh? A friend she made at school?”
Theresa asked, a little surprised.
“Mm.”
“That’s good. It looks like she’s really adapting to life in Bianshu Town. That puts my mind at ease.”
After all, Theresa had helped Owen keep Euchina’s situation a secret, so she cared deeply about her well-being.
If Euchina had been unable to fit in, it might have been better to take her to the Caleb Holy Kingdom to interact with other innocent vampires.
Just then, Fanny returned with Euchina and Lilica. Owen had specifically told the guards to let the three of them pass without issue.
As Euchina’s “grandfather,” Ryan immediately put down what he was doing and went to greet her.
“Grandpa, I’m back.”
Euchina said happily.
“I had so much fun outside today.”
After a winter of study, her speech had finally become smooth, without the need to puzzle over the meaning of words. But her greatest improvement was how much more cheerful she had become.
Perhaps Euchina had always been a lively, adorable little girl.
“I’m glad you had fun.”
Ryan reached out to pat her hair, then looked up to thank Fanny and Lilica.
“Thank you both for taking my granddaughter to the Spring Festival. I’ve just been far too busy to get away.”
“No need to mention it, Steward Ryan.”
Fanny said with a wave.
In truth, there was payment for looking after Euchina, and she was happy to accept. Besides, she and her sister had enjoyed themselves as well.
Noticing Euchina’s return, Owen and Theresa walked toward the door.
When Euchina saw Owen, she ran over excitedly and hugged his leg.
“Brother Owen!”
Brother? Standing by the door, Fanny was rather surprised. So Euchina had such a good relationship with the lord! Or maybe it was just that the lord’s personality was especially easygoing.
After letting go, Euchina turned to look at Theresa behind him.
Euchina recognized her—remembering that time with the Holy Light made her feel a bit afraid.
“You can call her Sister Theresa.”
Owen prompted.
Though still scared inside, Euchina obediently said.
“Sister Theresa.”
Theresa replied with a warm smile, which greatly eased Euchina’s fear of her.
With Euchina safely returned, the task was complete.
Lilica was starting to nod off in a drowsy haze, so Fanny didn’t stay long before bidding farewell and heading home.
As they parted, Euchina stood at the doorway, waving at Fanny until they were completely out of sight.
It was getting late, so Owen instructed Ryan to take Euchina back to her room for an early rest.
Watching Euchina’s small figure disappear down the corridor, Theresa asked again.
“As a vampire, Euchina will always keep that young appearance. Sooner or later, the Church will notice something unusual. Lord Owen, how do you plan to handle this in the future?”
Owen had already given the matter careful thought.
“I just spoke with Bishop Flynn and Captain Gazeef earlier—the reformists seem fairly reasonable. I know you gather innocent vampires together to protect them from contact with humans. Euchina doesn’t want to go to the Caleb Holy Kingdom, and as long as she can live a normal life here in Bianshu Town, I’m confident I can use that to convince them. So, for now, I plan to keep this a secret and look for an opportunity to explain it to Bishop Flynn later.”
“Let’s hope everything goes smoothly.”
Theresa replied.
…
Dongsheng Fortress, inside the castle.
Duke Eddie reclined half-sprawled in his specially made oversized chair, his face dark with gloom, one fat, meaty hand propping up his pig-like head.
At the moment, he was furious—the situation had completely slipped out of his control.
The captain of the Second Unit of the Holy Knights, Bray Gerger, had returned from his reconnaissance to the north and then left again, taking all his men without so much as a prior word.
What did that mean? It meant Bray had already seen through his lies—and that Bianshu Town had actually managed to repel the initial attack of the undead monsters.
Impossible! Even if the mud-reinforced walls had some defensive power, where would Bianshu Town get the manpower to guard the northern wall? There was no Temple Knight support, no adventurers recruited from here—just those few knights of Border Town?
At first, Duke Eddie thought Marquis Eisen must have driven a large number of commoners to the walls as cannon fodder to hold out in the early stage.
But thinking about it now, that didn’t make sense. If that were the case, Bray would have done everything to stop Marquis Eisen, not quietly return and immediately head north with all his men.
Could it be that Bianshu Town really possessed some powerful weapon capable of countering the undead?
If that were true, then Duke Eddie had to get his hands on that mysterious weapon. If it could deal with the undead, wouldn’t it be more than enough to deal with humans as well?
The problem was, the spies he had sent still hadn’t returned—clearly, they had been eliminated.
Who would have thought such a small place could have such strong counterintelligence? Did they have enough people to monitor the entire town?
The more he thought about it, the more things didn’t add up. Duke Eddie still couldn’t understand why Bianshu Town had no fear of the undead invasion from the south. If it were him, he would have long fled to a safe place to spend the winter. The further away from such terrifying monsters, the better.
Since when had that tiny Bianshu Town become so capable? He had to take it for himself, and put it to his own use, the duke thought darkly.
At that moment, a small, thin man entered the room, cautiously reporting,
“Your Grace, I have two matters to report.”
Duke Eddie irritably waved his other hand.
“Can’t you see I’m already annoyed? I don’t want to deal with anything right now. Get out.”
