Chapter 81: Exposing the Lie

“Marquis!”

Hearing the voice, everyone turned to see a soldier hurrying over from the distance.

Owen recognized him—if he remembered correctly, this soldier was scheduled to guard the castle gates that morning. Did something happen back at the castle?

The guard stopped in front of Owen and reported.

“Marquis, three Holy Knights from the Sacred Order have arrived in Bianshu Town. They’ve requested an audience with you.”

“What?!”

Mapel, who idolized the Holy Knights, reacted instantly. She stepped forward and asked.

“Are you sure? You’re certain they’re not impostors?”

“No mistake. All three were wearing the official Holy Knight armor.”

The soldier replied confidently.

“Chief Steward Ryan arranged for them to wait in the reception room until your arrival, Marquis.”

“They came this late—must’ve traveled by land. With the roads snowed over, they probably had a tough journey.”

Viscount Jarvis speculated.

He then turned to Owen and said.

“Marquis Eisen, I won’t accompany you. I still have matters to attend to at the north wall.”

Ever since acquiring his own musket, Viscount Jarvis hadn’t been very interested in the Holy Knights anymore—after all, Bianshu Town no longer relied on them to fend off the undead.

“All right, go ahead.”

Owen nodded.

He then looked at the guard and said.

“Let’s go. Time to meet those three tardy Holy Knights.”

The Holy Knights stationed at Eastern Fortress likely realized something was wrong when they failed to see any undead for a long while—so they finally sent someone to investigate.

They’d all been deceived by Duke Eddie, and now it was time to expose that lie.

All of Eddie’s carefully laid plans had collapsed. Owen couldn’t help but wonder—was the duke now throwing a tantrum in his castle?

At that moment, in the reception room of the lord’s castle, Bray Gegefer—the captain of the Second Unit of the Holy Knight Order—and his two subordinates were seated.

As the captain, Bray had the right to sit and rest. His two team members stood behind him, more relaxed but still respectful.

Bray’s thoughts were in disarray. What he’d seen in Bianshu Town differed greatly from what he had been told. He couldn’t make sense of it.

At first, when he saw smoke rising from chimneys in the distance, he immediately understood why no undead had shown up at Eastern Fortress.

Bianshu Town had been fighting them off alone.

But why were there still people here? Hadn’t Duke Eddie sent ships to evacuate everyone? Could it be that the selfish Lord Eisen had sealed the town and prevented anyone from leaving?

Could regular town guards really hold the northern wall without Paladin support? Impossible.

Had Eisen truly sent his people to die as cannon fodder against the undead?

The thought that the townspeople might be suffering drove Bray’s team to move even faster.

But upon entering Bianshu Town, they saw no signs of lockdown. People moved about freely.

On the streets, townsfolk were clearing snow with tools. Though not many were outside, those who were chatted and laughed—completely unbothered by any threat from the north.

Anyone unaware of the region’s danger might have mistaken the place for a peaceful, idyllic village.

Something wasn’t right. Had Lord Eisen truly managed to fend off the undead?

To uncover the truth, Bray had come to the lord’s castle with his two companions.

At that moment, the door to the room opened—and in stepped a young man in noble attire and a female knight.

Seeing this, Bray immediately stood up and stepped forward.

“First time meeting—you must be the new lord of Bianshu Town, Marquis Owen Eisen?”

“That’s right. And you are?”

Owen replied cheerfully.

“I’m Bray Gegefer, Captain of the Second Squad of the Holy Knights.”

“Captain Gegefer, let’s sit and talk.”

The two sat face-to-face, and a maid quickly brought over freshly brewed tea.

After a brief silence, Bray finally asked.

“Lord Eisen, why didn’t you evacuate?”

“We have more than enough strength to keep the enemy outside the walls—so why should we retreat?”

“But Duke Eddie said your city wall…”

“You mean the issue with the gap in the wall.”

Owen suddenly raised his hand, cutting him off.

“The northern wall was fully repaired long ago. It’s solid and more than enough to hold off the undead. Since the start of winter, Bianshu Town has remained safe and sound—what better proof could there be?”

“So… you’re saying I was deceived, right?”

Only then did Bray suddenly realize that he had been completely misled by Duke Eddie’s lies.

“Isn’t it obvious?”

Owen said.

“Damn it!”

Bray clenched his fists, frustrated.

“Duke Eddie also claimed he’d send plenty of ships to evacuate the civilians from BianshuTown and told us to prepare to face the undead. Now all that effort was for nothing.”

“Hmph!”

Owen let out a cold laugh.

“He had no intention of helping. Instead, he sent spies to set fire to Bianshu Town’s granaries to force us into retreat. Fortunately, we caught them in time.”

“I truly apologize. This was my failure as a captain—I trusted Duke Eddie’s words too easily.”

So much time had been wasted, and Bray felt deeply ashamed.

“No wonder Duke Eddie wouldn’t even lend us a single ship. I had no choice but to pick a few team members and march north on foot to scout the situation.”

“You don’t need to apologize.”

Owen didn’t blame Bray—everything had been orchestrated by Duke Eddie. Now the truth was out, and Eddie’s credibility was likely at rock bottom.

“Even without your support, we’re confident we can protect Bianshu Town with our own strength.”

“Marquis Eisen, you managed to hold the northern wall… Is it because you have some powerful weapon?”

Bray asked curiously.

“That’s one reason. If you’re interested, why not come with me to the northern wall and take a look?”

“I’d be honored, Marquis Eisen.”

Owen and his group left the castle and set off for the northern wall.

From a distance, Bray could see the wall, fully intact. He was both amazed and puzzled. How had the gap been repaired? Duke Eddie claimed it was patched with gray mud and rubble—but clearly, that kind of material wouldn’t have been nearly strong enough. Perhaps that “mud” had some kind of strategic use?

At that moment, the two knights behind Bray suddenly drew their swords and shouted warily,

“Lizardmen?!”

It was more of an instinctive reaction—part of their professional training.

After all, the Holy Knights often handled cases involving demi-human races. These beings were known to attack humans without hesitation, so the knights always had to remain on guard to protect their lives.

Even though the newer faction of the Temple preached racial equality, the deep-seated hatred between demi-humans and humans wasn’t something that could be erased overnight. Peaceful coexistence would take time.
