Chapter 79: The Public Cemetery

“She’s the captain of the Pegasus Unit. Her name is Angelica Sia.”

Yafen explained beside him.

“Now that the Pegasus Unit has been deployed, we can rest easy.”

“Oh? That Knight Sia seems quite strong.”

Having just witnessed Angelica slay the corpse wyvern, Legovis could roughly gauge her strength.

“Of course. The Pegasus Unit is the pride of our Holy Knights. Anyone who can become a Pegasus Knight is undoubtedly very powerful—especially Angelica Sia. As the captain, her strength is second only to our commander.”

As he spoke, Yafen lifted his chin proudly. Though he was talking about someone else, it felt as though he was praising himself.

Noticing the two people below, Angelica tugged the reins, guiding her Pegasus into a wide arc in the sky before descending toward them.

“You two focus on killing the undead monsters below. Leave the aerial enemies to us.”

“Understood, Captain Sia.”

Yafen responded loudly.

Then, riding her Pegasus upward again, she raised her lance and shouted.

“Pegasus Unit—full assault!”

One by one, Pegasi soared into the air, carrying the Holy Knights above the city wall to engage the corpse wyverns in fierce combat. The once formidable undead creatures were no match for them and began crashing to the ground one after another.

Seeing the Pegasus Unit take flight, the mages and archers ceased their attacks on the corpse wyverns to avoid friendly fire. Instead, they turned their attention to the undead monsters gathering below the city walls.

“Magnificent.”

Legovis’s eyes were locked entirely on Angelica, following her every movement.

Seeing this, Yafen thought to himself: Ah, Angelica has captured another man’s heart—this time, it’s the crown prince of the Dawn Kingdom.

Angelica’s beauty was renowned not only among the Holy Knights but throughout the entire Holy Church of Caleb. Before becoming a knight, her suitors could have filled every street of the Holy City.

However, she seemed uninterested in men and remained single to this day. Perhaps she found those who pursued her too mediocre and beneath her standards.

Only a truly exceptional man might be worthy of her, Yafen thought.

He was self-aware enough to know he had no chance. Just admiring from afar was enough. After all, Angelica’s beauty was certainly a sight to behold.

“I really want a Pegasus like that for a mount.”

Legovis said longingly.

Yafen’s face immediately fell. Wait, so what you’re interested in isn’t Angelica, but the Pegasus under her?!

Well… maybe it wasn’t such a surprise.

After spending more than a month together, Yafen had come to realize that Legovis was truly a pure-hearted prince who showed no interest in women, caring only for strength and battle.

I guess I was overthinking things again, Yafen thought, shaking his head slightly.

Then he felt compelled to warn him:

“Your Highness, you should give up on that idea. Pegasi strongly dislike men—only women with pure hearts can touch them.”

“I see.”

Upon hearing that, Legovis looked disappointed.

“Then I’ll forget it…”

He said quickly, hoisting his greatsword onto his shoulder.

“Come! Let’s go keep slaying undead monsters.”

The battle lasted for nearly four hours, and the heavy snow had mostly stopped.

Seeing that the situation was unfavorable, the skeletal mage decisively ordered a retreat. The remaining undead creatures withdrew like a receding tide and soon vanished into the snowy horizon.

In a patch of land to the northeast of Bianshu Town—

No, it was no longer a wasteland. The snow had long been cleared away, and low stone walls had been built around it using rubble and cement.

From now on, this would be the first public cemetery of Border Guard Town.

Owen had gathered a group of people here to hold a solemn funeral ceremony.

Normally, only people of status or wealth could afford proper funerals. Most commoners couldn’t even buy a tombstone—usually, a shallow pit was dug somewhere random, and the body buried there without ceremony.

Of course, this funeral wouldn’t be held with the pomp and formality of noble rites.

So, Owen borrowed various funeral customs from Winston’s world and designated a plot as a public cemetery, planning to hold a simple ceremony there.

In this way, it would show that the lord was taking this matter seriously, while also granting due respect to those who had sacrificed themselves for Border Guard Town.

This would greatly boost the militia’s sense of collective honor, reinforce their commitment to defending the town, and allow them to find a sense of achievement in battle.

Because the northern city wall couldn’t be left unattended, not everyone could attend the funeral. Instead, a few were selected at random from each unit.

Even so, including the families of the deceased, nearly a hundred people had gathered here.

Lusha was also present. Since one of the fallen was a member of their tribe, the Sinking SandTribe had sent about a dozen people to attend the funeral.

To be honest, Lusha was surprised when Owen personally came to ask whether they wanted their fallen tribe member to be buried in Bianshu Town’s cemetery.

The Sinking Sand Tribe had only made a temporary agreement with Lord Eisen to stay in his territory for the winter. In return, they sent lizard warriors to help defend the northern wall, which was also a way to protect their own people.

It was a mutual exchange—humans had no obligation to care for them.

Yet Owen said that no matter the race, any warrior who died fighting the undead deserved to be remembered by the people of Bianshu Town.

Those words moved Lusha and made him realize something: Owen was a lord who treated all races equally and could be trusted.

That very night after returning to their settlement, Lusha held a tribal meeting. After heated discussion, they finally agreed to let the fallen lizard warrior be buried here.

There were two individuals to be buried that day: one lizardfolk and one militia soldier.

Both had been killed by a corpse sandworm during the final phase of the second wave of attacks.

The militiaman’s body and the upper half of the lizardman’s were retrieved after the battle, dug out from the remains of the sandworm. Their deaths had been brutal, to say the least.

Everyone present—especially the humans—wore solemn expressions. The atmosphere was heavy.

Ahead were two already-dug graves. The deceased were placed in coffins, which would be lowered into the graves and then buried with soil.

Burial… So this is what a human funeral looks like? Lusha stared at the two pits, deep in thought.

The Sinking Sand Tribe held water burials—placing the departed on a wooden raft, letting it float downstream along the Wen River, while tribe members stood on the riverbank and prayed until the raft was out of sight.

But that kind of funeral was reserved for those of high status in the tribe. Lusha hadn’t expected Lord Eisen to respect the dead so much as to hold such a ceremony for them.

He didn’t know that this kind of practice had only started today.
