Chapter 78: Pegasus Knights

The real threat lies in the special types of undead monsters, far more dangerous than the common ones, and often responsible for heavy casualties among soldiers.

Because of this, during battle, scouts must constantly monitor the northern movements. If they spot any special undead monsters, they must immediately sound the horn to raise the alarm.

These tough undead creatures are typically handled by the Holy Knights.

Boom!

After smashing apart the skeleton of an undead ape, Legovis lifted his greatsword and drove it downward, destroying the magic core inside the skull.

“That’s the twelfth one down! Now where will the next one show up?”

Legovis patrolled the eastern section of the city wall, eliminating any undead monsters that managed to climb up.

Hoisting his greatsword, he looked toward a nearby defensive section where the soldiers seemed to be in trouble.

“Your Highness, watch out!”

Yafen suddenly rushed over and slashed upward at a black shadow diving from the sky. The creature was sliced in half, landing near Legovis.

“Oh?”

Looking down, the prince saw the remains of a zombie crow.

Its body had been cut diagonally in half, but the head was still intact. It flapped its wings weakly and let out a raspy caw.

Legovis raised his sword and smashed its head, killing it completely.

“So now they’re sending flying undead birds? Things are getting interesting.”

“Your Highness, please be cautious.”

Yafen warned.

“These small flying undead love to ambush from above—pecking at eyes or slashing with claws. Every winter, we lose quite a few soldiers to them.”

“Got it. Let’s go—they need help over there.”

Legovis slung the greatsword over his shoulder and jogged toward the troubled defense point.

Yafen shook his head helplessly.

Did he even listen?
He quickly followed behind.

With the help of these two, the crisis in that section was quickly resolved.

Woooo—

Another blast of the horn sounded—this meant a special undead monster had appeared, and everyone needed to be on high alert.

“What’s that?”

A soldier shouted, pointing to the sky.

Through the wind and snow, dozens of large black shapes suddenly appeared in the sky, flying toward the wall.

ROOOAAAR—

A strange screech echoed through the sky, making the soldiers on the wall grip their spears tightly in fear.

“Whoa! What kind of big birds are those?”

Legovis raised his greatsword and grinned eagerly.

“Your Highness, those aren’t birds.”

Yafen replied grimly as he drew his weapon.

“They’re zombie wyverns.”

The one leading the pack cut through the wind and snow, revealing itself to everyone.

At first glance, it resembled a bat with a dragon’s head—its wings, made of thin leathery membrane stretching from its elongated fourth fingers to its body, spanned nearly four meters.

It had a long tail, a slender neck, and a narrow dragon-like snout. The claws on its hind legs were long and razor-sharp.

Its body was riddled with rotting wounds, and though its wings were riddled with holes, it somehow managed to fly.

Its black, lifeless eyes locked onto Legovis…

—it had chosen its target and was gliding downward in attack.

“Bold of you! You dare challenge me? Come on then! You’re just a subspecies dragon.”

Legovis was fully fired up, raising his greatsword and preparing for battle.

“Something’s flying this way!”

From the watchtower at the center of the wall, a scout shouted in alarm.

Following the voice, Zeus looked northeast and saw a shadow rapidly growing larger, flying straight toward them.

Without hesitation, he drew the longsword from his waist and pointed it at the sky. As soon as he aimed at the incoming shadow, a yellow lightning bolt shot out from the sword’s tip.

Boom!

A zombie wyvern, its body emitting black smoke and flickering with arcs of lightning, plummeted toward the ground.

Zeus calmly sheathed his sword. The whole thing took only seconds. The special undead creature was eliminated before Orle even had a chance to act.

The nearby scout, visibly startled, swallowed hard. It was his first time seeing the Knight Commander take action up close—and the title of the Kingdom’s strongest knight was no exaggeration.

“Keep watching the enemy’s movements. Report any abnormalities to me immediately.”

Zeus instructed the scout.

“Yes, sir!”

The scout responded loudly and turned back to monitor the north.

Then Zeus turned to Orthofen and asked.

“The enemy has deployed zombie wyverns. Our forces at Red Sand Fortress aren’t equipped to handle them. Can we entrust this to the Holy Knights?”

“No problem.”

Orthofen nodded.

“It’s time to deploy the Pegasus Unit.”

On the wall, mages and archers were overwhelmed dealing with the flying zombie wyverns.

On Legovis’ side, he had already exchanged several blows with a wyvern, but neither side had gained the upper hand.

The enemy held the aerial advantage, and it was hard for Legovis to land a hit, even using fire magic—which he wasn’t proficient in.

Roar!

The zombie wyvern circled in the air, then dove once more. This time, it opened its mouth wide, a blue light glowing deep within its throat.

“Your Highness, watch out!”

Yafen dashed forward, swept his left hand across his sword—causing the white light on the blade to vanish—and then a white shield of light formed in his left hand. The shield bore the church’s emblem: a four-pointed star.

He assumed a defensive stance and raised the shield. Instantly, a much larger, semi-transparent version of the light shield appeared in front of him, slightly dimmer than the original.

The blue ice breath burst from the wyvern’s mouth, but the large shield successfully blocked the attack.

The icy breath dispersed, freezing the surrounding area and coating the ground in a thick layer of ice.

Realizing the breath attack had failed, the zombie wyvern retracted its breath, lowered its hind legs to reveal its sharp talons, and swept low to strike the large light shield.

Clang!
The attack failed to pierce the shield. The wyvern pulled up again and soared back into the sky.

After the attack was deflected, Yafen dismissed the large shield and swept his hand over his longsword, reapplying the holy element back onto the blade.

“Damn it! It keeps flying around—I can’t hit it!”

Legovis growled in frustration, looking up at the wyvern. He considered throwing his greatsword—maybe it’d hit.

Yafen tried to soothe him:

“Your Highness, zombie wyverns are always tricky to deal with…”

Before he could finish, a white streak of light flew in from behind. It sliced through the sky like a thrown spear, instantly piercing the wyvern’s head and sending the corpse crashing to the ground.

“Huh? Who was that?”

Legovis squinted and saw a female Holy Knight on a Pegasus had taken down the wyvern.

The Pegasus Knight was a beautiful blonde woman with sky-blue eyes and features as if sculpted by an artist.

She held a glowing white spear, similar to the light emitted from Yafen’s sword. The Pegasus beneath her beat its wings, hovering midair, its body covered in a faint, glowing white armor—especially on the sides and front.

The armor resembled the light shield used earlier, likely a magic enhancement for defense.

All in all, the Pegasus Knight’s soaring stance in the sky looked gallant and awe-inspiring.
