Chapter 75: Blow It Up
Xilong successfully drew the attention of the corpse rot sandworm, so now Lusha had to quickly prepare for the next step.
He had already learned how to use the explosive pack. Lusha located the copper wire fuse, hooked it with a tug, and yanked it hard.
A sizzling sound followed by white smoke—ignition successful.
Even though he had witnessed the terrifying power of explosives before, this was his first time personally handling one. Lusha was still quite nervous, afraid that it might blow up in his hands.
He had to throw it fast!
“Xilong!”
Lusha shouted loudly.
Upon hearing the command, Xilong turned toward Lusha and sprinted at full speed.
The corpse rot sandworm followed right behind, and its gaping abyss-like mouth appeared in front of Lusha once again.
“Taste the power of explosives!”
Counting down silently in his mind, Lusha seized the moment, and with all his strength, hurled the explosive pack—any delay and it would go off in his hands.
As the explosive pack dropped into the mouth of the corpse rot sandworm, he shouted to everyone around him: “Get down!”
Right after yelling, Lusha hit the ground himself—he didn’t want to be struck by flying debris.
Everyone had seen the explosive thrown by Lusha and turned pale with fright. They quickly turned to run a few steps, then dove to the ground.
Boom!
With a deafening explosion, the head of the corpse rot sandworm was blown to pieces, black smoke rose into the air, and chunks of flesh mixed with shrapnel scattered in all directions.
The magic core in its head was naturally destroyed as well. The corpse rot sandworm collapsed with a thunderous crash, oozing large amounts of thick yellowish fluid that soaked into the snow.
Once the explosion was confirmed to be over, the surrounding knights and lizardmen slowly got up. Seeing the sandworm had been slain, they burst into cheers.
“That huge worm is dead?!”
“It really got blown up—our chief is amazing!”
“No, it’s the explosive pack invented by Lord Eisen that’s amazing!”
This victory had not come easily. Some even gave their lives in the fight. Once the battle was over, the warriors who had died defending Bianshu Town would need to be properly buried.
Even the militia guarding the city walls had heard the explosion. They couldn’t help turning around, and when they saw the terrifying worm had fallen, they were overwhelmed with excitement.
As he stood up, Lusha brushed the snow off himself. The battle had been chaotic, but a win was a win.
Then he looked ahead and saw Xilong still lying face down in the snow, seemingly unable to get up.
Xilong had been closest to the blast point when the explosive went off. Even though he had dropped to the ground, there was still a high chance he’d been hit by shrapnel.
Worried, Lusha rushed over.
“Xilong! Are you okay?”
Up close, he saw several wounds on Xilong’s body—his scales had been torn open by the flying shrapnel.
“I’m not dead, but my right leg hurts like hell. I can’t put any weight on it.”
Xilong said through gritted teeth.
Looking lower, Lusha noticed a sharp chunk of rock had deeply embedded itself in Xilong’s right thigh—it might have severed the muscle.
“Hold still, I’ll help you up.”
With Lusha’s support, Xilong finally managed to stand, albeit with difficulty.
“Thanks, Chief.”
Bang!
Just then, over at the city wall—
A gunshot rang out.
Everyone looked toward the source of the sound and saw Owen standing atop the city wall, holding a musket—he had just fired a shot into the air.
“Well done! But the battle isn’t over yet. Everyone, return to your positions immediately and prepare to eliminate the remaining undead creatures. Injured personnel should head to the infirmary right away. Those who can’t move on their own, team vice-captains, assign someone to assist them.”
After checking on the wounded, most of the knights quickly returned to the city wall.
The lizardmen unit also regrouped around Lusha while inspecting the condition of their own.
“What are the casualties?”
Lusha asked.
“Reporting, Chief!”
A vice-captain stepped forward.
“One warrior on the city wall was just killed, and three others were injured. They’ve already been sent to the infirmary on their own.”
Xilong was not included in the report, as the vice-captain knew Lusha wanted to know about the others.
“Understood. You all get back to the wall—the fight isn’t over yet. Don’t bring shame to our Sinking Sand Tribe!”
“Yes, sir!”
Following Lusha’s orders, the lizardmen warriors returned to the wall to continue fighting.
“Come, I’ll take you to the infirmary.”
Lusha said to Xilong.
“Thank you, Chief.”
Xilong replied, politely refusing.
“But you’ll be more useful staying here on the wall. Just have someone else take me.”
“Alright then.”
Lusha agreed without pressing.
He called over a tribesman and repeatedly instructed him to be careful while escorting Xilong to the infirmary.
…
The Red Sand Fortress was located at the northernmost edge of the Kingdom of Dawn, in the wide central pass of the Cross-Spine Mountains.
The entire fortress stood on a frigid highland, flanked by towering walls that stretched into the distant, jagged peaks. Compared to this, the northern wall of Bianshu Town looked more like a short stone fence.
Just as the rumors said, it was a desolate place. Even now, in winter, with snow blanketing the ground, there was a lingering sense of bleakness.
It was said that in spring and autumn, sandstorms frequently swept down from the north, making the environment extremely harsh.
Worse yet, due to the curse of the Kazitu, the Red Sand Fortress could not produce its own food. All supplies had to be shipped from Fengsui City, a major agricultural hub in the south. Even water was scarce—people here often went two or three months, or longer, without bathing.
Because of this, no noble was willing to live in the Red Sand Fortress. The only residents were knights stationed here, conscripted soldiers forced by circumstance, and exiled criminals from all over the kingdom.
Criminals bore special facial markings. If they dared escape the Red Sand Fortress and were caught, they would be executed on the spot by patrols or knights.
The highest commander here was Knight Commander Hughes Banjel, reputed to be the strongest knight in the kingdom.
Since winter began, the fortress had already fended off one large-scale attack from the undead and several smaller skirmishes. With support from the Templar Knights, they had managed to hold the line.
Prince Legovis Wells, who had accompanied the Holy Knights, also had the honor of participating in these battles. Thanks to his impressive personal strength, he achieved commendable results.
As a noble prince, Legovis enjoyed the luxury of having his own room in the fortress, complete with heated firestones and a full array of living supplies.
If he wanted to, he could bathe every day—a royal privilege.
However, Legovis understood that he wasn’t here on vacation. He made himself live like the knights around him.
Since arriving at Red Sand Fortress, Legovis hadn’t bathed in over a month.
Though not used to it, he never once complained and endured it all in silence.
By fighting and living alongside them, Legovis earned the respect of many knights. Even Commander Hughes and Holy Knight Captain Orthofen spoke highly of him.
There was no second prince like him who could endure such hardship.
