Chapter 74: Crossing the City Wall

“Don’t panic!”

No matter how loudly the knight in charge shouted, he couldn’t stabilize the chaotic scene.

Swish! Swish! Swish!

At that moment, the knight squad raised their bows and crossbows, firing a volley of arrows at the Corpse-Rot Sandworm. However, the arrows only caused negligible damage to its tough outer skin.

The enemy’s hide was simply too thick—sharp arrows couldn’t pierce it to reach the internal organs.

Below, the militia were scattering in all directions. The sandworm opened its massive jaws and grabbed one slower-running militia by the back.

“Ahh! Help me—!”

The captured soldier cried out in terror.

The sandworm tossed him up and then tilted its head back, swallowing him whole.

Viscount Jarvis had already ordered the militia on that section of the wall and nearby to retreat. They were no match for an undead monster like this. Only knights and lizardmen could take it on.

With no one around to stop it, the Corpse-Rot Sandworm continued to slither toward the central part of the wall in search of a new target.

A lizardman charged head-on with a spear in hand, but the sandworm bit down on his upper body, then violently shook its head—ripping the body apart. The lower half of the corpse fell behind the city wall.

Seeing this, a knight holding a shield behind him froze and dared not step forward.

“Lord Owen, please take cover and evacuate.”

Mapel said, standing in front of Owen. She raised her magic sword with a look of determination, ready to die with the enemy if necessary.

“No. I will fight too.”

Holding a fireball in his right hand, Owen firmly refused to leave.

As the lord, fleeing in the face of a difficult enemy would surely crush the morale of his own people—he had no intention of retreating.

“Fire!”

Finally reloaded, Viscount Jarvis raised his musket and, without time to aim, pulled the trigger.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The third volley of shots rang out. Unlike arrows, lead bullets had enough penetrating power.

Taking this chance, Mapel slashed out an ice blade, and Owen hurled his fireball.

Sensing danger, the Corpse-Rot Sandworm curled its head inward, protecting it within a loop of its own body, letting the outer flesh absorb the bullets.

After taking this round of attacks, the sandworm’s body suddenly shuddered, and the ice covering its surface shattered and fell away.

Perhaps feeling the sting of the musket fire, it gave up on advancing and instead began slithering down from the wall, moving toward the direction of Frontier Town.

This was the first undead monster to successfully cross the wall since winter began.

“Throw the spears!”

Lusha roared.

They absolutely could not allow the sandworm to approach Frontier Town. The lizardmen’s settlement area was very close to the northern wall, and if the monster broke through, the Sinking-Sand Tribe would be the first to suffer.

Upon hearing his command, over twenty lizardmen lifted their spears, aimed, and hurled them with full force.

Swish!

Lusha also threw his own spear.

One by one, the spears struck the sandworm’s body, some deeply embedding into its flesh. A few missed and landed in the surrounding snow.

One particularly strong throw drove a spear straight into the sandworm’s tail, pinning it firmly to the ground. It seemed to be the one thrown by Lusha—its force was astonishing.

“Lend me your weapon!”

Grabbing a spear from a nearby militiaman, Lusha leapt off the city wall and charged toward the Corpse-Rot Sandworm.

Seeing their chief take the lead, most of the lizardmen followed and also jumped down from the wall.

Mapel also wanted to join the fight, but her duty was—

“Protect Owen, you must not leave your post!”

Viscount Jarvis ordered the knight battalion to go down and surround the Corpse-Rot Sandworm, while the militia remained on the city wall to guard against any remaining undead monsters lurking at the base.

After issuing the orders, he and Owen exchanged a glance.

Both of them clearly understood that to kill the Corpse-Rot Sandworm, they would need weapons far more powerful than muskets.

Fortunately, Xilong was nearby. Drawing the short blade at his waist, he was ready to charge into the fray.

“Xilong!”

Owen quickly called out.

Xilong turned around, anxiety written all over his face.

“What is it, Lord Eisen?”

“You’re faster than most. Head over to that bastion and grab a pack of explosives. Support Chief Lusha—this sandworm isn’t something to be taken lightly.”

Without a second thought, Xilong nodded. “Got it!”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he turned and dashed toward the nearest bastion.

The Corpse-Rot Sandworm tried to burrow underground, but suddenly found itself unable to move. When it looked back, it realized its tail had been pinned by a spear. With a hard yank, it freed itself.

But Lusha wasn’t about to let it escape underground. Without hesitation, he hurled the long spear in his hand.

The spear pierced the sandworm’s midsection clean through and continued flying forward.

“Chief, here!”

A tall, lean tribesman behind him shouted, tossing over another spear. Lusha caught it and gave it a few test swings.

Apparently enraged by the previous blow, the Corpse-Rot Sandworm turned toward Lusha, opened its massive jaws, and charged.

“Scatter!”

Lusha roared.

He didn’t want to see any more of his people injured. He was already furious from earlier, when a tribesman had been torn in half.

As the abyss-like jaws came barreling toward him, Lusha hurled his spear with all his might.

The weapon flew straight into the sandworm’s mouth, piercing through and exiting from the rear—another ineffective attack.

There was no time to dodge. With unstoppable force, the sandworm slammed into Lusha. At the last moment, Rusha grabbed onto two hooked fangs on the outside of its mouth, narrowly avoiding being swallowed whole.

Unable to get him into its mouth, the creature reared high and violently flung Lusha away.

Thud!
Lusha hit the snow-covered ground hard. Gritting through the pain, he sat up and spat out a mouthful of blood.

That last hit had dealt a heavy blow to his back. If not for his strong physique and the tough scales covering his body, he might not have survived.

Thanks to Lusha drawing the creature’s attention, the knights and lizardmen seized the opportunity to surround it. The battle turned into a chaotic melee.

The sandworm repeatedly used its tail to sweep the battlefield, gradually breaking through the encirclement.

Bang!
Finally, the gunners on the wall opened fire. They had held back earlier for fear of hitting Lusha, who had been caught in the creature’s jaws.

“Chief!”

At that moment, Xilong ran over to Lusha carrying a pack of explosives.

“Lord Eisen said to use these to deal with that giant worm.”

As he spoke, he handed over the explosives.

“Perfect timing. I’m going to shove this into the worm’s mouth and blow it to pieces. Xilong, I need you to draw its attention.”

Lusha tore off the outer waterproof oil-paper wrapping around the pack.

“No problem, Chief.”

Without delay, the two launched into action. Xilong charged ahead with short blades in both hands, while Lusha followed closely behind, holding the explosives in one hand.

ROAR—

Pulling its head back, the sandworm let out a deep, angry growl after failing to bite anyone.

Using his agility, Xilong climbed silently up its body from behind, racing toward its head.

With a leap, he swung his blade and cut off one of the feelers near its head.

Although the attack didn’t do much physical damage, it infuriated the sandworm. It opened its abyss-like mouth and chased after Xilong with relentless fury.
