Chapter 71: Old Faction and New Faction

“What?! You had a companion too? Also a survivor from Karn Village? Tricked by the Church and then killed?”

Owen withdrew his right hand, his face filled with shock. So there were others who had also been turned into vampires.

“Mm.”

Euchina nodded firmly.

That survivor was actually killed by people from the Church?! Didn’t Bishop Flynn say that captured vampires would be brought to trial? Or… did Euchina’s companion drink human blood? But Euchina also said the Church people were liars—what exactly happened?

“This can’t be!”

Theresa, standing behind, frowned deeply.

“When our people capture vampires, they are required to report to the higher-ups and hand them over to the Tribunal for judgment. Unless…”

“Unless what?”

Owen turned to her.

Glancing around at the people nearby, Theresa apologized.

“I’m very sorry, Lord Owen. This isn’t the place to talk about it.”

Alright, it might involve Church secrets, so Owen didn’t press further. Instead, he turned back to Euchina.

“Euchina, would you be willing to go to the Holy Nation of Caleb? I’ve heard they have sanctuaries for vampires.”

Eugenia decisively shook her head.

“In that case, if you don’t want to go to Caleb, then stay here in Bianshu Town. As the Lord of this town, I swear to do everything in my power to ensure your safety.”

“Lord?!”

Euchina looked at him in disbelief.

A lord who didn’t fear vampires, who dared to stand this close and speak with her—most people would have fled in panic if they encountered a vampire.

“Ah! I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Owen Eisen, Marquis and Lord of Bianshu Town.”

With that, Owen gave her a polite smile.

“Lord Owen.”

Theresa interjected.

“Vampires confirmed to be harmless are usually sent to the Holy Nation of Caleb. There has been no precedent of one staying elsewhere.”

“But we can’t force someone to go where they don’t want to. I’ll find a way to convince Bishop Flynn.”

Owen replied.

After a moment of hesitation, Theresa gritted her teeth and made her decision.

“If this is what you wish to do, Lord Owen, then I’ll assist you.”

“Thank you, Theresa. That will make things much easier.”

Once again, Owen extended his right hand to Euchina and asked.

“So, what’s your decision? Will you come back with me, or continue wandering out here?”

“You…”

Euchina stared at Owen for a long time before slowly speaking.

“You’re not lying.”

She raised her pale little hand and cautiously reached out, lightly touched Owen’s hand, hesitated for a second, then finally let her hand rest gently in his warm palm.

Such a cold and delicate hand—that’s what Owen felt in that moment.

Behind him, Mapel let out a breath of relief and lowered her hand from the sword hilt. Honestly, she had been on edge the whole time, fearing Euchina might harm Owen.

“Don’t worry. I will take good care of you from now on.”

Owen promised sincerely, gently holding her hand.

Then, standing up and turning back to the group, he said.

“Mission over. Let’s head back.”

The group withdrew from the magic stone cave and retraced their path to the valley’s entrance.

There, Owen issued a strict gag order to everyone—not a word about Eugenia was to be shared with the outside world.

News of Euchina was to be kept strictly confidential.

Most of those present were trusted confidants, so Owen felt assured.

As for the few exceptions—like Maddy from the sharpshooter squad—he should know better than to speak carelessly about such matters.

Just as they were preparing to ride back, a minor incident occurred. Owen had initially planned for Euchina to ride back with Mapel, but unexpectedly, Euchina clung tightly to him.

With no other choice, Owen let her sit in front of him on his horse and ride back together.

Maddy and Xilong still had other assignments. They were tasked with notifying the search teams still combing the mountains for vampires that the mission was complete and everyone was to return to the northern wall.

It was said that lizardmen had a unique way of summoning their companions, so they mainly relied on Xilong for this task.

Upon arriving at the lord’s castle, everyone except Theresa and Mapel returned to the northern wall.

One of the knights was also sent with a message to inform Viscount Jarvis—Owen wanted to discuss the vampire situation with him in person.

Next, Owen entrusted Euchina to the maids, instructing them to help her bathe and change into clean winter clothing.

After all, she had been wandering outside for so long—her body was filthy, and she carried an unbearable stench. To be honest, Owen had endured the odor the entire journey without showing a hint of disgust.

Perhaps because it was the first time she had encountered someone so gentle, Euchina developed a deep dependence on Owen. The moment they were apart, she looked visibly panicked and was reluctant to follow the maids.

It took repeated reassurance from Owen before she finally left, glancing back every few steps.

After she left, Owen gave specific instructions to Lane.

He ordered that a guest room be prepared for Euchina, that fresh animal blood be provided for her to consume privately in her room, and that no one else must find out. Ryan was to personally handle the cleanup.

Upon learning that Euchina was a vampire, Ryan was initially concerned.

But seeing that she looked like a little girl around six or seven years old, he eventually softened and promised to carry out Owen’s instructions to the letter.

With these matters settled, Owen brought Theresa into the parlor and asked Mapel to guard the door and ensure no one came close.

After they sat down, Owen gestured to the empty seat across from him.

“Theresa, please have a seat.”

Theresa walked over and sat down, her face solemn. She knew Owen was about to ask about the Church.

“What you couldn’t say earlier in the magic stone mine—can you tell me now?”

“If it’s Lord Owen asking, then yes.”

Theresa nodded.

Out of personal conviction, she had no intention of hiding it from Owen.

“Euchina said her companion was killed by someone from the Church. What exactly happened?”

“It was likely the work of the Old Faction.”

“What do you mean?”

It turned out that the Holy Nation of Caleb had once undergone a major reformation.

After defeating the Vampire Progenitor, the Church of Lumichael rose to become the dominant religion, with followers across many countries.

The Church began expanding rapidly—building churches, spreading doctrine, and recruiting talented individuals to train as clerics and holy knights, all in the name of hunting down the remaining vampires.

Under the Church’s relentless pursuit, vampire numbers plummeted. To preserve their kind, vampires began injecting their blood into innocent civilians.

Most civilians had weak wills, but with enough numbers, some managed to survive the conversion process.

Before this, turning someone into a vampire involved strict selection criteria. Too many vampires meant too little human blood to go around.

For those innocent victims, the Church’s standard policy was complete extermination—no vampires were to be allowed to exist.

However, some within the Church felt sympathy for the victims and secretly helped them.

Thus, two factions formed within the Church.

The Old Faction insisted on following the first pope’s decree: total extermination of all vampires.

The New Faction advocated for eliminating only the evil vampires, sparing those who posed no harm.
