Chapter 70: Euchina

“Why?”

A tender, youthful female voice came from deep within the darkness of the mine, filled with fear and urgency.

“Hold your positions.”

This was a rare opportunity for communication, and Owen called out to stop the knights who were preparing to pursue.

The four knights followed his order and resumed their positions. One of them picked up the fallen torch and re-lit it.

“No killing… want to live… don’t, catch me.”

Her speech was fragmented, barely forming complete sentences—it seemed the vampire hadn’t spoken to anyone in a very long time.

“You really haven’t killed anyone?”

Owen asked in a low voice.

“You’ve never drunk human blood?”

“No… human blood… never drank. I know… once I drink… I can’t stop… so I restrain… myself.”

Though the vampire hidden in the dark was struggling to speak clearly, Owen could still understand her general meaning. It was clear she was innocent.

“That’s good.”

Owen suddenly took a few steps forward. Mapel and Theresa quickly followed, and though Lusha was a beat behind, he caught up soon after.

“I know you’re scared. Please don’t worry—we won’t hurt you from now on.”

“You… leave… let me go.”

The vampire requested.

“I can let you go. But do you really think that’s the best choice?”

The girl didn’t answer right away. She fell silent, seemingly contemplating Owen’s intentions.

Owen continued.

“I know becoming a vampire wasn’t your choice. But do you really want to keep hiding like this? Aren’t you lonely, being all alone? Come back with us. End this wandering life. I can guarantee your safety. As long as you haven’t killed anyone, the Church’s judgment will clear you.”

The vampire seemed moved by his words. She had no idea how long she had been drifting alone outside. It was so lonely—so unbearably lonely.

“Why… do this?”

She asked.

“I simply want to help you.”

Owen replied.

“If you haven’t harmed anyone, that means you’re an innocent victim. And you shouldn’t have to suffer like this.”

After a long silence, the vampire finally said.

“You… didn’t lie.”

From the depths of the mine, a pair of crimson eyes lit up, and a small figure slowly emerged from the shadows.

Seeing this, the others quickly tightened their guard, gripping their weapons. Even Maddy raised his musket nervously.

The vampire finally revealed her true form—completely in the appearance of a little girl. She must have been turned when she was around six or seven years old.

She was draped in animal hides, her skin ghostly pale. Her long grey hair reached far down, but she brushed it aside to reveal a thin, delicate face.

It was indeed a little girl, just as they had guessed from her size during the earlier fight and her voice.

Seeing everyone around Owen bracing for combat, the vampire loli bared her fangs and claws, striking a feral pose. Her fingernails extended rapidly—each about ten centimeters long.

“Put away your weapons. I believe she won’t harm me.”

As he gave the order, Owen also stored his staff at his waist and showed both hands, completely empty.

After a moment of hesitation, the others followed suit and lowered their weapons. Mapel was initially worried, but seeing the firm look in Owen’s eyes, she decided to trust his judgment.

Seeing this, the vampire girl retracted her claws and kept her gaze fixed on Owen.

Owen smiled and asked.

“What’s your name?”

“Eu… Euchina.”

“Thank you for trusting me, Euchina.”

“No.”

Euchina shook her head.

“See through lies… my ability.”

[Isn’t she just a humanoid lie detector?!]

Winston couldn’t help but comment.

Oh? She actually had that kind of ability? Could Euchina be one of those rumored high-ranking vampires with special powers? Owen was immediately intrigued.

Ignoring Winston, Owen continued asking.

“So, Euchina, how did you become a vampire?”

He had to get to the bottom of this. There might be more vampires out there harming people, and they had to be eliminated before more victims appeared.

“Karn Village… big fire… dead people.”

Recalling the tragedy from long ago, Euchina trembled slightly. It was clear she had not yet recovered from the trauma.

“What!”

Owen was shocked.

“You’re a survivor of the Karn Village Massacre?”

“Mm.”

Euchina nodded.

That meant Euchina had been wandering for twenty years. Owen couldn’t even begin to imagine how she had survived all that time.

With a heart full of sympathy, Owen wanted to approach her and offer comfort.

“Lord Owen.”

Mapel spoke up, trying to stop him.

“Don’t worry.”

Owen turned to her and said.

“Euchina is just an innocent victim. She won’t hurt anyone.”

“At least let me go with you.”

Mapel insisted.

“And me too,” Theresa added.

Understanding that they were simply worried for his safety, Owen nodded.

“I’ll go too—”

“No need.”

Lusha had just offered to accompany him when Owen decisively refused.

“If too many of us go over, we might scare Euchina.”

Owen explained.

“Alright then.”

Lusha shrugged.

Though others felt uneasy, they had no grounds to object.

With Mapel and Theresa in tow, Owen walked toward Euchina.

As they approached, Owen kept saying gently, “Don’t be afraid.”

Seeing the three of them coming closer, Euchina instinctively took two steps back in fear. But she didn’t want to give up this opportunity. The man before her had promised her safety—and she had already used her ability to confirm that he wasn’t lying.

Crouching down in front of her, Owen tried to calm her inner anxiety.

“You’ve been wandering for so long—you must have suffered a lot. Come back with me. I’ll provide shelter, the animal blood you need, and even arrange for you to attend classes. If you have any other requests, just tell me.”

As he spoke, Owen extended his right hand toward her, palm up.

Could this really be the end of her days as a drifter? Euchina stared at Owen’s hand. She wanted to grab it several times but didn’t dare.

Before meeting Owen, she had encountered a few humans while hiding her identity. They all promised to help her—but every one of them had been lying. As soon as she detected the lies, she would run away in a panic.

Since then, Euchina hadn’t dared interact with humans again. Their mouths were full of lies. She was afraid.

“Really… Church… judgment?”

“Hmm? You don’t trust the Church?”

Owen was puzzled.

“Why?”

Glancing nervously at Theresa behind Owen, Euchina hesitated and then revealed the reason:

“Had a companion… Church… big liars… caught. Only I… escaped.”
