Chapter 61: Castle Wall Defense Battle

The second round of volleys struck, once again mowing down the frontmost undead soldiers. Yet, the undead monstrosities behind them continued pressing forward.

In the blink of an eye, the horde had reached the base of the castle walls.

A series of thuds rang out below as the front line of rotting corpse soldiers rammed straight into the stone fortifications. They charged with no hesitation—heads smashed to pulp upon impact, spraying foul, blackened blood across the wall. The stench of decay quickly filled the air.

Huh? Are these undead completely brainless or what?

Kadir almost laughed at the ridiculous sight. But what happened next wiped the smile off his face and replaced it with horror.

The undead soldiers in the rear began climbing over the fallen bodies of their comrades, clinging to the wall and scrambling upward. More followed behind, scaling the backs of the ones before them.

It was like a grotesque human pyramid, stacking higher and higher—undead monsters unflinchingly stepping on their own to ascend the wall.

“Stab them! Quick!”

At the knight’s command, Kadir instinctively thrust forward with his spear.

Just as he readied his weapon, a corpse soldier climbed to the top edge of the wall right in front of him. Its twisted face poked up alongside a hand, emitting a grotesque growl.

What a revolting creature!

Kadir stabbed forcefully, driving his spear into the undead’s mouth. Beside him, Brue also thrust his spear into the monster’s throat.

The two of them worked together to shove the corpse soldier off the wall, causing a large section of the grotesque “corpse tower” below to collapse.

At the same time, the knights raised their bows and crossbows, unleashing another volley at the undead horde below.

While Kadir’s side was holding firm, not all areas were so fortunate.

There were four such undead towers forming at the base of the wall. The spearing had only toppled two—on the other two flanks, undead soldiers had already climbed over the parapets.

“Waaah! The monsters are climbing up!”

A militia screamed in terror.

“Don’t panic! Eyes forward!”

A knight barked at the others, then swiftly drew his longsword and dashed toward the breach.

Kadir obeyed orders without hesitation. Gripping his spear tightly, he fixed his gaze on the next rising corpse tower. He didn’t spare a glance toward the chaos elsewhere.

He remembered clearly what the one-eyed instructor had said during training:

“If your attention wavers during battle, the enemy in front of you will seize that opening. And then… you die.”

A few knights charged with swords drawn, quickly cutting down the undead that had breached the wall.

Another group was repelled by Lusha, who arrived to support with her long spear.

Then suddenly, a ball of flame burst in the sky and slammed into the center of one of the corpse towers, toppling it in an instant. The falling bodies ignited, setting nearly ten undead ablaze.

The Lord himself has joined the battle! How inspiring!

Kadir caught the glimpse of fire out of the corner of his eye and felt a surge of exhilaration.

The last corpse tower also crumbled soon after. A concentrated volley from the ranged unit had targeted its structural weak point, while lizardmen above rained suppressive fire from the parapets. Together, they brought it down.

Once all four corpse towers had been neutralized, a knight bellowed:

“Hold your ground! Do not give the undead a single opening!”

“Aaaah—! My hand!!”

Someone screamed in agony.

“Report! He was just scratched on the hand by one of the monsters!”

“Wrap it with a cloth! You’ve still got two legs—get to the infirmary yourself! Move!”

“Yes!”

Although the scene was somewhat chaotic, everything was still being handled according to the emergency procedures outlined in the rehearsal plan.

The human tower was being formed again. Kadir, Blue, and the rest of their team worked together to knock the top skeleton soldiers off the tower, collapsing it once more.

As long as they remained vigilant, there was nothing to fear from these undead monsters—they couldn’t scale the wall.

The knight unit raised their crossbows, and the shooting squad lifted their muskets for another volley, suppressing the undead’s climb.

Soon after, some militiamen and lizardmen began bringing large stones and hurling them down at the base of the human tower. Only a few undead monsters were knocked down—its effectiveness was limited.

Here, the strength difference between humans and lizardmen became evident. It took two humans to lift a large rock, but a lizardmen could manage it easily with just their hands.

At the base of the wall, a wolf-shaped skeletal undead climbed to the top of one of the towers and suddenly leapt, easily landing on top of the wall.

Several nearby militiamen were shocked and immediately thrust their spears at it.

The skeletal wolf dodged the attacks and used a spear as a springboard to leap again—this time landing directly near Owen.

“Watch out!”

Shouted Viscount Jarvis.

He wanted to raise his musket to shoot, but he had just fired a round and was now in the process of using a ramrod to load a lead bullet wrapped in paper into the barrel.

Despite this, Viscount Jarvis wasn’t too worried about Owen’s safety, because standing beside the lord was his daughter, Mapel.

As her father, he was well aware of his daughter’s strength.

The skeletal wolf charged straight at Owen, leapt into the air, and opened its gaping maw full of fangs.

As it lunged toward him, Mapel raised her magic sword and slashed horizontally. The blow was so powerful that with a metallic clang, the skeletal wolf’s entire frame shattered.

Bones scattered all over the ground trembled, as though trying to reassemble themselves.

But Mapel wouldn’t give the monster a chance. She stomped on its skull, flipped her sword, aimed, and plunged the blade downward, piercing through the skull.

With its magic core destroyed, the bones ceased trembling and became an ordinary pile of white bone.

Two more dog-like undead monsters began climbing the human tower, ready to leap onto the wall.

“Thrust—now!”

Ordered a knight.

Kadir and the nearby teammates once again thrust their spears. One corpse hound was stabbed in the belly and fell; the other leaped between several spears and landed on the wall, immediately pouncing at a militia.

Just as Kadir turned to see who the corpse hound was attacking, he suddenly heard a knight shout, “Eyes front!”

Kadir’s focus snapped back to the wall. He saw a skeleton soldier already clutching the edge with its bony hands, about to climb over.

Ignoring the fate of the corpse hound, Kadir quickly raised his spear and moved in to handle the skeleton soldier.

Blue followed close behind to assist.

Meanwhile, a knight behind them drew his sword and, together with a nearby lizardman, attacked the corpse hound from both sides.

The knight swung his sword, forcing the corpse hound off the soldier. The lizardman lunged from behind, his spear piercing the hound’s back. He used his full strength to pin it down.

Taking the opportunity, the knight raised his sword and delivered an upward slash, slicing off half the corpse hound’s skull and killing it.

On Kadir’s side, they had just knocked down another human tower.

“Help me…”

The injured soldier who had been knocked down earlier moaned in pain.

Seeing how badly he was hurt, the knight casually pointed to two people.

“You and you—carry him to the infirmary, quickly!”

Kadir happened to be one of them. He and another teammate rushed over and gasped in shock.

It was brutal. The man’s stomach had been ripped open, and his intestines were spilling out. Could he even be saved? He might die halfway through treatment.

Still, an order was an order. Kadir and the teammate lifted the injured man and began carrying him toward the infirmary.
