Chapter 16: Practice

Since there was no room in the castle specifically designated for teaching, Owen had arranged for a reception room to be refitted the day before to serve as a temporary classroom.

This would be the place for lessons going forward. Following Owen inside, Fanny looked around the makeshift classroom and couldn’t help but exclaim inwardly—it was amazing!

“You can sit over there.”

Owen said casually, pointing to a seat.

Fanny nodded and obediently walked over to take her seat.

After placing a few items on the lectern, Owen walked over and put a plainly bound book on Fanny’s desk.

“This is a book I’m lending you. You can take it home to read, but please remember to take good care of it.”

This was a book Owen had copied during his time at the magic academy, complete with his personal insights. He hoped it would help Fanny in her studies.

Holding the book carefully, Fanny flipped through a few pages and was quickly absorbed by the magical knowledge within.

She never imagined she’d have the chance to study magic again—and being personally taught by the lord himself no less! It felt almost surreal. Her parents’ long-held hopes for her were finally coming true.

While Fanny was still feeling emotional, Owen walked up to the lectern and began the first lesson.

“Let’s begin directly with your weak point—magic control. Open your book to…”

And just like that, Fanny and her sister began a new life in Bianshu Town, leaving behind their days of hardship once and for all.

As the town’s lord, Owen had a great many responsibilities and couldn’t possibly teach Fanny every day. Besides, magic couldn’t be learned through theory alone—it had to be practiced and mastered through experience.

So, most of Fanny’s lessons were practical, held in the courtyard and supervised by Chief Knight Mapel. As a magic knight, Mapel was quite adept at controlling magic power.

Owen only gave theoretical lessons in the classroom when he had spare time.

After a few days of training, Fanny had already made significant progress in her control over magic energy. It was clear she had real potential—she had simply lacked the proper training.

Watching her become more confident and fluent with magic, Owen couldn’t help but feel like he had stumbled upon a hidden gem.

One morning, Owen made a special visit to the courtyard to check on Fanny’s practice. At that moment, she was working on a fire spell necessary for cement production—Flame Pillar.

A ball of fire swirled upward into a blazing column. Then the column shrank in height and widened to become a “fire cake.” After holding this shape for a moment, it returned to a column—and back again.

Fanny repeated this cycle several times before finally dispelling the spell with precision.

“Very good.”

Mapel said, evaluating from the side.

“You can now freely alter the shape of your spells. Your magic control has reached an acceptable level.”

“It’s all thanks to you, Miss Mapel. Thank you for helping me train,” Vannie said sincerely.

Over the past few days, the two had grown quite close. Vannie even began calling her by name in private, rather than her original formal title, “Sir Knight Jarvis.”

“Not bad! You’re really starting to get the hang of it.”

Just then, Owen walked over with a smile.

“Good day, Lord Owen.”

“Good morning, Marquis.”

Both Mapel and Vannie greeted respectfully upon seeing him.

“Fanny, how about going to the cement workshop today to observe the production process? They’re scheduled to begin firing today.”

Owen figured it was about time for Fanny to get hands-on experience at the cement workshop. In a few days, she might be ready to take on the job officially. Once she was able to handle the cement burning on her own, Owen could finally free himself from that duty and focus on the next phase of his work.

“Really? That’s great!”

Fanny cheered.

What made her happiest was the fact that she was finally close to graduating from the basic salary phase. According to their contract, once she could produce cement independently, her daily pay would multiply several times—up to one silver coin a day.

That kind of money would have been a small fortune for her in the past.

“Mapel, go with her. She’ll need your magic assistance during the cement burning.”

The Frost Cloak was extremely expensive—there was only one available at the moment. Owen had gritted his teeth and ordered another from the royal capital, but it still hadn’t arrived. As a result, they had to rely on Mapel’s magic for cooling for now.

“Yes.”

Mapel nodded.

At the cement workshop, Fanny watched curiously as raw materials were gradually processed into the cement mixture. Though she didn’t fully understand the process, it all looked quite impressive.

“Huh? Uncle Garcia?”

At the entrance to the firing room, Fanny unexpectedly spotted a familiar face—someone who lived right next to her. The man she called Uncle Garcia was now wearing a Frost Cloak and holding a staff inlaid with a high-grade fire magic stone, just about to enter the firing chamber.

Perhaps hearing his name, Garcia turned around.

“Well if it isn’t little Fanny. What brings you—”

Seeing Mapel beside her, he immediately understood.

“Ah! So you’re the second fire-type mage the marquis mentioned.”

“Uncle Garcia, I didn’t know you were a mage too. You sure kept it well hidden!”

Fanny had visited her neighbor’s house before. Garcia lived there with his wife, who had limited mobility. Both of them adored Lilica, and over time the families had become close.

She had never seen Garcia wear mage robes or mention anything about being a mage. With his honest, down-to-earth demeanor, Fanny always thought he was just a local from Bianshu Town.

“Well, same goes for you.”

After all, Fanny never mentioned her identity either. The clothes she wore now were given to her by the lord.

Because Owen noticed that Vannie and Lilica didn’t have many proper outfits, he had instructed Ryan to send over a few sets. The patched-up mage robe had since been carefully stored away—it was a cherished keepsake of hers.

“Hehe.”

Fanny giggled sheepishly.

“Oh, right! The marquis told me to observe the cement firing process, so I’ll be in your care today, Uncle Garcia!”

“No problem. Let me introduce the equipment used in cement firing first. This is…”

Garcia began explaining his gear one by one. Fanny listened attentively, eyes full of admiration. Both the Frost Cloak and his staff were high-grade equipment. She sincerely hoped she’d be able to start working soon, so she could try using them herself.

Afterward, the three of them entered the firing chamber, each tying on a long cloth strip as required.

Before starting, Garcia turned to Fanny and said.

“While I’m firing the cement, I’ll explain each step as I go. But if you have questions, don’t ask right away. I’ll be focusing on controlling the magic and can’t be distracted. You can ask everything afterward—got it?”

“Got it.”

Fanny nodded earnestly.

“First is the drying phase…”

As he spoke the first step, Garcia raised his staff, chanted a spell, and unleashed a pillar of flame.

Throughout the process, Fanny carefully memorized each step and closely observed both Garcia’s actions and the furnace, afraid to miss any detail. A sand timer was also installed in the chamber, and she noticed Garcia followed the timing for each phase with strict precision.

Halfway through, the heat became overwhelming for Fanny. Thankfully, Mapel was by her side—her cooling magic helped make it bearable.

After experiencing it firsthand, Fanny finally understood how tough the cement firing process truly was. No wonder they needed Frost Cloaks for the job.

Once the firing was completed, the three of them exited the chamber. While waiting for the clinker to cool, Fanny bombarded Garcia with a flurry of questions.

Most of them were answered, but there were a few even Garcia couldn’t explain—like, what exactly is “Celsius”? Why is temperature measured that way? And how do they know the exact temperature required?

Those were probably questions only Owen could answer.
