Chapter 159: Guests

Not only could he perform chemistry experiments, but he could also learn more advanced chemical knowledge. Niuke Lian was eager to accept immediately.

Yet he forcibly restrained his excitement, looking dejected as he said.

“But… I have to go home to help my parents with their work.”

“I’ll send someone to talk to your parents,”

Owen said. This wasn’t a problem—most students in the school had to help their families after returning home.

Owen planned to have Clive speak with Niuke Lian’s parents. A rare chemistry talent had appeared, and it was essential to nurture him properly.

“Moreover, being admitted into the lab is essentially an internship, which comes with pay. I’m sure your parents will be glad to let you join the lab.”

“What’s an internship?”

Niuke Lian asked, confused.

“It means taking the theoretical knowledge you’ve learned and applying it in actual work, testing it in practice, while also developing your working skills.”

Owen paused, then added.

“If you perform well during the internship, after you graduate, you can be promoted to a formal researcher, continue doing chemistry experiments in the lab, and your pay can rise to one gold coin per month.”

Owen mentioned the pay deliberately, intending to tempt Niuke Lian. But to his surprise, Niuke Lian seemed indifferent, showing little interest in money.

After thinking for a moment, Niuke Lian accepted Owen’s invitation.

“Lord Owen, I am willing to join your laboratory. I want to do more chemistry experiments.”

“Good.”

Owen nodded in satisfaction.

“You can go back for now. Remember to stay after school tomorrow; I’ll send someone to pick you up and bring you to the lab.”

“All right, Lord Owen.”

After Niuke Lian left the office, Theresa came over holding a list, smiling as she handed it to Owen.

“Lord Owen, recruiting just one person for the lab won’t be enough. Here’s a prepared list of students who performed well in the recent basic science assessment. How about selecting a few more from this list?”

“That makes sense. Let me take a look.”

In the end, Owen selected four students, both male and female, all of whom had nearly perfect scores in the chemistry portion of the basic science exam.

Later, Theresa called the four students into the office.

Upon hearing that they could earn pay while doing experiments in the lab, they all readily agreed to join.

Theresa finally agreed to become the Minister of Education, becoming one of the senior officials in the City Hall, with her own office.

She would handle school management, the formulation of educational policies, and other related tasks.

With the handover complete, Owen’s workload would be significantly reduced.

Due to the shortage of teachers, Theresa would still continue to teach classes.

However, this meant she would have no time for church-related duties.

Since there was a cooperative relationship between Bianshu Town and the Caleb Holy Church, Owen figured the church wouldn’t mind “losing” her temporarily.

While Owen was explaining the responsibilities of the Minister of Education to Teresa, a guard hurried over.

“Apologies for the interruption, Marquis, but I have urgent news to report.”

“Lord Owen, you go ahead and handle your work.”

Theresa said with a smile and a nod.

Turning to the guard at the door, Owen asked.

“What’s the urgent matter?”

“A new batch of natural latex has just arrived in Bianshu Town.”

“What’s the problem? Can’t we just handle it as we did previously?”

“That’s not really an urgent matter. If it were the first batch of natural latex and we didn’t know how to handle it, that would be understandable. But this is the second batch, and we’ve already given instructions on how to process it.”

“Besides the natural latex, the Sinking Sand lizardmen also brought two guests.”

“Oh? Guests?”

Owen’s first thought was that they were leaders or elders from another lizardman tribe.

Although Bianshu Town had established contact with the Green Lizard Alliance, most interactions were still with the Sinking Sand Tribe, and there had been little exchange with the other three tribes.

Still, Owen firmly believed that over time, those three tribes would eventually set aside their suspicions and establish basic mutual trust with Bian Shu Town.

“Are they lizardmen from the other tribes?”

“No.”

The guard shook his head. “

They are a male and a female from the dwarf race.”

“Dwarves?!”

Owen was stunned.

Why dwarves? That doesn’t make sense! Where in the Maze Forest would dwarves come from? Aren’t they supposed to live in the underground cities in the northern part of the kingdom? How did the lizardmen end up bringing them here?

“Yes,”

The guard continued.

“And during the transport of the natural latex, the convoy was attacked by monsters. One of the dwarves was injured while defending against them.”

Even though a dirt road had been opened between Bianshu Town and the east bank of the Wen River, the monsters in the forest still posed a serious threat and needed to be dealt with.

“What!”

Owen quickly turned to Theresa. Before he could speak, she nodded knowingly and said.

“Lord Owen, please take me to treat the injured dwarf.”

“Right.”

Then Owen looked at the guard and ordered.

“Let’s go! Take us there quickly.”

As they left the City Hall, Mapel also followed, and the group headed southwest toward the border of Bianshu Town.

At the border between Bianshu Town and the Maze Forest, there was an outpost manned by ten soldiers in two shifts, responsible for monitoring forest activity and coordinating with the lizardmen.

Inside the wooden building serving as the outpost, Tithion sat shirtless on a wooden bench, occasionally letting out groans of pain.

“Ouch—this hurts so much!”

A long scratch ran down his back, inflicted by the monsters in a sneak attack from behind.

“You brought this on yourself by being reckless!”

Sally scolded while tending to the wound.

“The red-faced monkeys had already retreated, yet you ran after them on your own. Didn’t you know how cunning they are?”

The red-faced monkeys that attacked this convoy were the same monsters that had previously ambushed Sally and the others.

Probably resentful from their previous failed attack, they targeted this convoy transporting natural latex to take revenge.

“Weren’t those red-faced monkeys the same ones that attacked you before, Sally? I just wanted to teach them a lesson! Oof—Sally, be gentler.”

Tithion straightened his back sharply. Sally had scrubbed the wound too hard, causing him pain.

“You need to feel it! Only then will you learn your lesson!”

Sally pressed harder against the wound.

“Ah! That hurts so much!”

Tithion jumped up from the bench, turning his face toward her and pleading.

“I’ve learned my lesson! Sally, please, go easy on me!”

“Alright, now sit properly.”

After receiving her confirmation, Tithion obediently sat back down.

At that moment, a lizardman standing guard at the door suddenly turned his head to the distance and said.

“Lord, they’ve arrived—and they’ve brought a cleric who can use healing magic.”
