Chapter 13 – Taking a Chance

Fanny took the usable items from the pile of junk at the door, packed them into a bundle, and slung it onto her back.

After confirming everything was in order, she led her sister out of the dark and damp alleyway.

Wandering aimlessly through the streets, Fanny still hadn’t recovered from the sorrow of losing their home. To be honest, she hadn’t even thought about what to do next—her future felt completely uncertain.

“Sis.”

Lilica looked up at her.

“Do we not have a home anymore?”

Fanny stopped walking and looked at her young sister. For a moment, she nearly broke down in tears. Kicked out of her team and now homeless—today had been a truly despairing day.

Fortunately, she managed to suppress the urge to cry. She didn’t want to show her fragile side in front of Lilica.

Gently patting her sister’s head, Fanny said earnestly.

“As long as we’re together, anywhere can be home.”

Though those were her words, she silently made a firm promise in her heart: she would give her sister a stable home—no more wandering, no more drifting.

But to make that happen, she needed money. So how could she earn it? Suddenly, she remembered the commission from Bianshu Town.

If the client there was willing to hire her and she was allowed to stay on after two months, then she and Lilica might finally have a stable home.

Thinking of that, Fanny crouched down to meet Lilica at eye level.

“Lilica, would you be willing to start a new life with me in a new place?”

“Mm!”

Lilica nodded firmly.

“Wherever big sister goes, that’s where Lilica wants to be!”

It was decided! Fanny would take that commission and go with Lilica to Bianshu Town to try their luck.

Now that her mind was made up, it was time to take action. But just as she was enthusiastically thinking about how to get to Bianshu Town, she realized the first obstacle was… money.

Bianshu Town lay to the north of Dongsheng Fortress. The land in between was largely undeveloped, and traveling by land would take at least three days. The expenses on the way would definitely exceed five copper coins.

After thinking it over, there was only one person who might be able to help financially—Sister Anri.

Fanny didn’t like asking others for help, but she had no other choice. So she headed with Lilica in the direction of the cathedral.

Fanny’s return caught Anri by surprise. Sensing something urgent, Anri immediately came to meet them.

Outside the cathedral, after hearing Fanny’s intentions, Anli looked stunned.

“What?! You’re taking Lilica to Bianshu Town?!”

Her voice was so loud that several nearby believers turned their heads with curious glances.

Realizing her outburst, Anri quickly smiled and nodded at them, then whispered to Fanny.

“Come with me.”

The three of them entered the cathedral and found a secluded corner with no one around.

Once they were alone, Anri asked again,

“Fanny, even if you accepted the guild’s commission, you could’ve left Lilica in the orphanage like before. There’s no need to drag her into this.”

“This time is different.”

Fanny explained.

“Lilica and I might settle down in Bianshu Town.”

“You want to settle in Bianshu Town? Why?”

“Today has just been… terrible…”

So Fanny shared the news of them losing their home and explained the commission details. After hearing everything, Anri finally understood why Fanny had made such a decision.

“I see…”

Anri still looked worried.

“But you don’t even know if they’ll hire you. Isn’t this all a bit too risky?”

“I know. But I want to take a chance. If I let this opportunity slip by, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”

Fanny’s tone and expression were full of resolve—it was clear no one could talk her out of it now.

After a long silence, Anri sighed and shook her head.

“Sigh… Alright. I’ll lend you enough money for two boat tickets. Take the ship.”

“Huh?”

Fanny was startled and quickly waved her hands.

“That’s too much. We’ll go by land. Boat tickets are expensive.”

“Just take it.”

Anri pulled out two silver coins from her pouch and firmly stuffed them into Fanny’s hands.

“Traveling by land is rough—you’ll be sleeping outside, eating poorly, and you might run into danger. Even if you’re not worried about yourself, think about Lilica. She’s still so young.”

“Then… alright.”

Fanny glanced at Lilica. After an internal struggle, she ultimately accepted the money—for her sister’s safety, she couldn’t take any chances.

After taking the money, Fanny promised firmly.

“I will definitely pay this money back one day.”

“Mhm, I’ll be waiting.”

Anri didn’t really care about the repayment. She only hoped that this trip to Bianshu Town would finally bring Fanny and Lilica some stability.

Suddenly remembering something, Anri said to Fanny.

“Wait here for a moment. I’m going to write a letter.”

She hurried off, rushed back to her room, quickly penned a letter, and then returned to solemnly hand it to Fanny.

“If they don’t hire you in Bianshu Town, go to the church and give this letter to the bishop there. They’ll provide you with the help you need after reading it.”

“Thank you so much, Priestess Anri.”

Fanny was deeply moved and accepted the envelope with both hands.

Since there was a boat to Bianshu Town departing that afternoon, Fanny could only say a brief goodbye to Anri before heading to the docks with Lilica.

Bianshu Town – Third floor of the Lord’s Castle, in the study

Having just finished the last of his paperwork, Owen set down his quill and stretched lazily.

He stepped away from his chair and walked to the window. From there, he could see most of Bianshu Town spread out below him.

The lord’s castle was the tallest building in town. But according to Winston, there were buildings on his side that had over a hundred floors. Just how tall was that? Wouldn’t it collapse? It was unimaginable.

In the distance, a plume of white smoke rose from one of the buildings—clearly, the cement kiln had started firing again.

It had been many days since Owen issued the recruitment notice for fire-element mages.

So far, only one mage had accepted the commission and come to Bianshu Town. That person had just completed their training a few days ago and was finally able to fire cement on their own.

Since it took time to recover magic energy, the cement workshop could only operate once every day or two. Even with the same equipment Owen used, that mage could only fire two batches each time—far less efficient than Owen himself.

Up at the northern wall, Viru had already started using cement to patch up two breaches, and demand for cement was now pressing.

As a result, whenever Owen had free time, he personally went to help fire the cement.

Now, after so long, it was clear that no more fire mages were coming from Dongsheng Fortress.

Owen couldn’t help but wonder—was his offered reward not attractive enough? That couldn’t be right. Two gold coins for two months’ work, and no need to fight dangerous monsters. So why was no one interested?

In truth, Owen had underestimated the pride of mages in certain matters.

As highly sought-after individuals, mages generally had no trouble making money—Vannie was one of the rare exceptions and didn’t count.

Because of that, mages weren’t particularly concerned with payment. Instead, they focused more on the nature of the job itself.

Firing cement, to them, felt like hard labor meant for commoners. Even with high pay, most mages wouldn’t give the job listing a second glance.

There were other factors, too: some suspected the commission might be fake and that the real job would be something entirely different—such bait-and-switch schemes had happened before, especially when the pay didn’t seem to match the task. Others simply thought Bianshu Town was too remote to bother with.

At that moment, a guard knocked on the door and reported.

“Marquis, there’s a young woman from Dongsheng Fortress at the castle gate. She claims to be a fire mage and says she accepted a commission from the Adventurers’ Guild. She requests an audience with you.”

“What? Let her in immediately!”

After waiting so long, a second mage had finally arrived. Owen was visibly excited.
