Chapter 51: The Vote
Seeing the bloodthirsty wolf pack retreat, Lusha finally lowered his massive axe, gasping heavily for breath. His chest still ached faintly, but the injury wasn’t serious.
Though the battle had ended, there were still a ton of matters to deal with.
No time to rest—Lusha immediately returned to the tribe to begin handling post-battle affairs.
Following Owen’s orders, Viscount Jarvis led the knights over to assist. The clerics from Bianshu Town also arrived to treat the wounded and even distributed their surplus herbs to the lizardmen who were skilled in herbs.
Just then, a female lizardman, clutching an injured lizard child, came weeping before Kerman.
“Dear… our child… sob sob sob…”
Shocked, Kerman hurried over to check on the boy.
He found the child critically wounded, his body covered in bites and claw marks—his tail even torn off. No amount of herbs was going to save him.
“How could this happen?! Wasn’t he supposed to be protected in the center of the formation?”
His wife, sobbing, explained through tears:
“I heard he wanted to help everyone… and ran outside despite the warnings. He grabbed a tree branch and tried to fight the bloodthirsty wolves… and this is what happened.”
“He…”
Kerman gently stroked his child’s head, heartbroken. This was his first child—so full of energy and life just a short time ago, now left in this terrible state.
Hearing that a child was gravely injured, Theresa rushed over. She earnestly introduced herself to Kerman and his wife:
“I’m a priestess. I can use healing magic. If you trust me, please let me try to save your child. I will do my absolute best.”
Kerman turned to look at Theresa.
To be honest, even though the humans had sent reinforcements and helped drive off the wolves, deep down, Kerman still harbored a strong mistrust of humans.
But to save his child’s life, he had no choice but to place his hope in the human priestess before him.
“Then… I leave it to you, human priestess.”
At Theresa’s instructions, Keman’s wife gently laid the child on the ground, then stood close by, nervously watching.
Next came the usual procedure—praying to the gods, after which Theresa raised her hands and cast healing magic. A soft white light rose from the ground, enveloping the dying child completely.
By now, Theresa had undergone systematic training in the Holy Nation of Jarel. Her healing abilities far surpassed the time she had used it on Owen as a child.
Under the holy light, the child’s wounds began to heal at a visible pace, eventually forming scabs.
When she finished, the severely wounded child was no longer in danger, now peacefully asleep on the ground.
“Thank you so much! Thank you, human priestess, thank you!!”
Having thought her child was surely doomed, Kerman’s wife broke into joyful tears, hugging her child tightly.
This time, her tears were tears of relief and joy.
While checking on the tribe, Lusha happened to see this scene. He walked over quietly and patted Kerman on the shoulder.
“You’d better give this human priestess your heartfelt thanks.”
“Yeah… I will.”
Kerman replied.
By now, it seemed that Kerman’s distrust of humans had significantly lessened.
After spending more time together, their mutual distrust would likely be fully resolved.
Following a period of busy activity, the casualty report for the lizardmen was finally completed.
The tribe currently housed 361 members, out of which 23 had died, and more than half were injured to varying degrees.
This was after the intervention of clerics. Most of the dead had died on the spot. As for the gravely wounded who still clung to life, Theresa had managed to save nearly all of them.
There was no helping it—among the clerics present, only Theresa’s healing magic was powerful enough to have this effect.
On the human side, six people were injured, but fortunately, none of them were seriously hurt.
All in all, for the lizardmen, this battle against the bloodthirsty wolves had ended in a tragic toll.
As evening approached, their support tasks were nearly complete, and Owen prepared to lead his group back to Bianshu Town.
Before leaving, Lusha and Owen held another brief meeting.
As the tribe’s chief, Lusha expressed his gratitude on behalf of his people:
“We’re deeply thankful for your assistance. Without your help, our Sinking Sand Tribe might have been wiped out here by those bloodthirsty wolves.”
Owen replied frankly:
“I had my reasons for helping you. As for the offer I made previously—I was sincere. I hope you’ll consider it seriously and give me a clear answer.”
The message was obvious—Owen was hinting that this was more than just a good deed. Lusha clearly understood.
“Rest assured, I’ll hold a tribal meeting tonight and put it to a vote. I believe I’ll have a definite answer for you by tomorrow.”
“Then I’ll await your decision.”
Owen smiled.
As the meeting ended, Owen left behind six knights to help protect the lizardmen, and instructed the rest to carry back the corpses of the bloodthirsty wolves, including the alpha wolf.
The party then departed from the forest.
The wolf corpses weren’t taken just because they could sell for a good price—they were also being sent to Winston.
Winston had said that the monsters in this world were likely mutated by magic energy, and he wanted to study them closely.

That evening, all the lizardman warriors who had been on missions returned to the tribe.
Upon learning about the bloodthirsty wolf attack, they were filled with regret and guilt for not arriving sooner. Then, hearing that humans had sent knights to aid their tribe, their opinions of humans improved significantly.
Once all the children had been put to bed, Lusha gathered all adult tribe members who could still move. They sat in circles around a large central bonfire.
Since the knights from Bianshu couldn’t participate in the lizardmen’s tribal council, they set up camp not far away.
Standing beside the flames, Lusha looked around at his people, took a deep breath, and began to speak.
“Today has no doubt been a tragic day. The bloodthirsty wolves attacked us with full force. Many of our kin were injured, and some even lost their lives. Fortunately, the humans sent their knights just in time, and their clerics saved many of our wounded. I know many among us still distrust humans. We’ve never truly interacted with them, and we’ve often heard terrible stories. But after what happened today, I believe not all humans are bad. Some, like the lord who helped us, are worthy of our trust. As for the trade offer he proposed—I’ve already shared it with you at the last meeting. I know I’m still a young and inexperienced chief, so I want you all to make this decision. Now we’ll vote. All who agree to trade with the humans—please raise your hand!”
One by one, the tribe members raised their hands—some even raised both.
Looking across the crowd, almost no one abstained—even Kerman, once one of the most distrustful of humans, raised his hand halfway.
Seeing this, Lusha nodded in satisfaction.
“Good. I understand your decision. Tomorrow, I’ll deliver our answer to the human lord. Now then—let’s move on to other matters.”
Since they had agreed to trade with the humans, Lusha intended to propose additional conditions to ensure the safety of the tribe—this would require further discussion. There were also several other issues to address.

Through this battle, Owen had finally earned the trust of the Sinking Sand Tribe.
