Chapter 49: Fierce Battle
“Die!”
With a swing of his giant axe, Lusha decapitated a Bloodthirsty Wolf. Its spraying blood splattered across his scales, making a hissing sound.
When attacking prey, Bloodthirsty Wolves’ blood becomes boiling hot and slightly corrosive.
Thankfully, the lizardmen’s scales were tough enough to block most of the damage.
But killing just one wasn’t nearly enough. At least fifteen more wolves were circling Lusha, constantly looking for a chance to launch a sneak attack from behind.
Adding to the danger, the wolves were incredibly agile, causing many of Lusha’s strikes to miss entirely—an infuriating situation.
Had it not been for Kerman and another lizardman warrior fighting at his back, Lusha likely wouldn’t have made it this far.
That’s right—Lusha and his companions had already left the tribe’s defensive perimeter.
Their one and only goal:
Infiltrate enemy lines and slay the wolf leader.
Once the leader was dead, the entire Bloodthirsty Wolf pack would collapse into disarray.
While they fought desperately to reach the wolf leader, the rest of the tribe was engaged in a bitter stalemate with the rest of the pack.
To better withstand the onslaught, the acting commander Lusha had appointed chose to tighten the defensive formation, drawing the battle circle inward.
The lizardman warriors who had been guarding the edge of the Mysterious Forest had already returned to reinforce the defense. Like the others, they now stood at the outermost ring, fighting tooth and nail.
From time to time, a tribesperson was bitten or slashed, and the battlefield echoed with screams of pain. Hearing those cries only made Lusha more anxious, and his axe strikes became increasingly wild and forceful.
The longer the fight dragged on, the more reckless and aggressive Lusha’s style became—almost completely abandoning defense.
By now, he was covered in fresh wounds. Thankfully, they were all minor and didn’t impair his combat ability.
“Haaah!”
Lusha shouted as he brought his axe crashing down on the back of a wolf.
But the creature dodged at the last second, and the axe cleaved into a tree instead.
CRACK!
The not-so-thick tree snapped in two and fell with a crash.
“Damn it!”
Lusha cursed under his breath.
Nearby, Kerman thrust his spear to repel a charging wolf. Seizing a small opening, he turned and shouted to Lusha.
“Chief! Push forward! We’ll hold these stinking wolves off!”
“Go finish that big one, Chief!”
Another warrior chimed in.
Lusha looked up toward the wolf leader ahead. It wasn’t far now—if he sprinted, he could reach it in time.
“Alright! I’m counting on you!”
Placing his trust in his comrades, Lusha hoisted his axe and began charging, swinging wildly to clear a path through the surrounding wolves. Breaking out of the encirclement, he raced straight toward the wolf leader.
Of course, the Bloodthirsty Wolves weren’t going to let him go so easily—five of them immediately sprang after him, jaws wide open, aiming for his unguarded back.
But Kerman and the other warrior weren’t about to let that happen.
Leaping into the air, Kerman speared one wolf through the skull, then kicked off a nearby tree to spin midair, knocking down two more with a sweeping strike of his spear.
The other warrior wasn’t far behind, slashing down the remaining two with practiced ease.
Thanks to their efforts, the pack was held off—leaving Lusha and the wolf leader locked in a one-on-one showdown.
Lusha finally reached the front of the wolf leader, only to see that it was already fully prepared for battle…
Seeing that the wolf leader was ready for him, Lusha didn’t charge in recklessly. Instead, he quickly circled to the side before suddenly launching an attack.
But the wolf leader wasn’t an easy opponent. It agilely shifted its stance and swiftly swung its claw.
Clang!
The claw collided with the axe blade, sparks flying as it scraped across the metal. Lusha’s attack was blocked.
The powerful impact from the clash forced Lusha to retreat two or three steps. His hands, still gripping the axe handle, were trembling.
Just from that single strike, Lusha could roughly gauge the wolf leader’s strength—it was on par with his own.
Having blocked the blow, the wolf leader turned to face him fully. It lowered its front half into an attack stance, baring its fangs fiercely, saliva dripping from its maw.
Lusha steadied his grip on the axe and charged in again, launching a new wave of attacks from the front.
The two clashed for several rounds, but Lusha was clearly at a disadvantage, forced onto the defensive.
If a frontal assault wasn’t working, then he’d try from behind.
He widened the distance and picked up speed, circling around to the wolf leader’s rear. As he raised his axe to strike, he thought the wolf’s large body would make it slow to turn in the forest.
Unexpectedly, the wolf leader lashed out with its tail, sweeping it sideways.
The tail struck Lusha in the chest, sending him flying. He slammed into a thick tree trunk and crashed to the ground.
The blow had been brutal. Lusha coughed up a mouthful of blood, and his axe had flown from his hands, landing nearby when he hit the tree.
Sensing its chance, the wolf leader lunged forward to finish him. Sprinting toward Lusha, it raised a claw and swiped down.
Lusha didn’t have time to dodge. In desperation, he grabbed the nearby axe and thrust it up to block.
Thud!
The heavy hit landed, and Lusha coughed up more blood from the force.
Both hands straining to hold the axe, Lusha was now pinned under the wolf leader’s weight, completely unable to move.
“Chief!”
Seeing this, Kerman and the other warrior’s expressions turned grim.
Out of worry, Kerman let down his guard for a moment—just enough for a Bloodthirst Wolf to sneak in and claw his back, leaving a long gash.
That opening drew in four or five more wolves, all leaping in to finish him off.
“Kerman, look out!”
The other warrior rushed to help, barely managing to drive the wolves off and save Kerman.
But now the two of them were locked in combat with the rest of the pack, barely holding their ground, with no chance to assist Lusha.
Things were looking dire. The wolf leader opened its bloody maw, trying to bite through Lusha’s skull. He kept dodging left and right, refusing to give up.
At this rate, Lusha was going to be torn apart by the wolf leader.
It was a true life-or-death crisis.
Suddenly—a blade of water flew through the air, slicing into the wolf leader’s right flank. The strike knocked its raised paw off balance, giving Lusha a precious opening.
He quickly rolled to the side, sprang to his feet, and with all his strength, swung his axe.
Though he didn’t have time to properly adjust the blade, the flat of the axe still struck the wolf leader, sending it flying back several meters.
Finally given a moment to breathe, Lusha turned toward the direction the water blade had come from—and saw a blue-haired female knight standing there.
It was she who had used that magic water blade.
Human reinforcements had finally arrived.
Lusha recognized her. She had stood beside the human lord as a bodyguard during their earlier negotiations.
She was Mapel, who had brought three knights and six patrol soldiers to join the battle. The lizardman Xiron, who had been sent to request help, had also returned and rejoined the fight.
