Chapter 48: Seeking Aid

“Xiron!”

After the tribe entered a heightened state of alert, Lusha called out the name of a comrade toward the sky.

The leaves above rustled, and a tall, slender lizardman jumped down from a tree. Using the strength of his tail, he landed steadily on the ground and then dropped to one knee in front of Lusha.

“Chief, what are your orders?”

“You were there during the meeting with the human lord.”

Lusha said quickly.

“Go now and notify the humans. Tell them we’ve been attacked by a pack of Bloodthirst Wolves and request their support.”

Lusha didn’t know whether the humans would help, but he had to send someone to try.

At the same time, this would serve as a test—to gauge the sincerity of the humans’ offer.

If they turned a blind eye, then their so-called “deal” likely came with hidden dangers—and should be rejected. If they came to help, then perhaps they truly meant well.

“But…”

Facing an impending battle while being asked to leave made Xiron feel like a coward—like he was running away—and he found it deeply shameful.

“No buts! While you’re at it, recall the others stationed at the edge of the forest.
If the humans agree to help, someone needs to lead them in. Now go!”

There was no time to hesitate. Gritting his teeth, Xiron nodded firmly.

“Understood!”

Once Xiron departed, Lusha pulled his massive axe from his back and slammed the blade into the ground. One hand on the handle, he stood ready, silently awaiting the enemy’s arrival.

All he could do now was pray that the pack wasn’t too large.

The tribe only had just over thirty lizard warriors capable of standing against the Bloodthirst Wolves. The rest of the tribe couldn’t fight a single wolf one-on-one—it would take multiple people to hold one off.

To make matters worse, their weapons were limited.
Only the lizard warriors had proper gear—most others were wielding wooden sticks or just thick branches.

Awooooo—

A chilling howl rang out in the distance, a sign of just how quickly the Bloodthirst Wolves had tracked them.

Many tribesmen gulped involuntarily, gripping their makeshift weapons tighter.
Fear was beginning to silently spread throughout the group.

Moments later, a lizardman suddenly leapt down from a tree and raised his arm to point in a direction for Lusha.

“Chief! I spotted a large number of Bloodthirst Wolves approaching from that way!”

“Everyone, be ready—the enemy is coming!”

Lusha turned to face the direction indicated, placing his other hand on the axe handle.
With both arms, he hoisted the heavy battle axe, bracing for impact.

Then—red eyes began to glow in the shadows of the forest ahead.

One by one, the Bloodthirst Wolves burst from the underbrush, revealing their savage forms.

But instead of charging straight into the camp in a frenzy, they began fanning out, forming a perimeter around the entire lizardman force, encircling them completely.

“Damn…”

Lusha muttered under his breath.

This pack had to be at least two hundred strong, far more than he had anticipated.

Today, the Sinking Sand Tribe was truly facing a deadly crisis.

The tribesmen kept their eyes trained on the wolves before them—but Lusha’s gaze went past them, deeper into the forest shadows.

Because there, looming larger than the rest, was an even bigger figure.

Soon, a massive wolf—standing at least 1.7 meters tall—stepped out slowly, drooling as it emerged from the darkness.

This was the alpha of the Bloodthirst Wolf pack, making its appearance in front of the lizardmen without a hint of fear.

Lusha’s eyes narrowed as he locked stares with the wolf leader—
and neither side flinched.

Both sides gave orders to their people at almost the same time.

“Repel them!”

Awoooo—!

The Bloodthirst Wolves and the lizardmen warriors charged at each other, and the battle officially began.

At the gates of the border town, outside the lord’s castle—

Owen stepped out of the castle with Mapel, preparing to head to the northern wall to inspect the militia’s training.

“Lord Owen, please be careful!”

Just as they stepped through the gate, Mapel suddenly moved in front of Owen, drawing her longsword and eyeing something ahead with great vigilance.

The two guards on duty at the gate instantly reacted as well, raising their spears and positioning themselves behind her defensively.

What danger could there possibly be right outside my own home?
Owen looked on in confusion.

Following Mapel’s line of sight, he saw a figure racing toward them at full speed.
Tall and thin—clearly a speed-based lizardman.

It was Xiron, the one Lusha had sent to request aid from the humans.

On his way to the castle, Xiron had startled several townspeople, who mistook him for a wild monster from the Mysterious Forest and fled in fear.

Could it be the lizardmen have come with their answer?
No… something’s wrong, Owen quickly dismissed the idea.
If it were just a reply, there’d be no need to rush like this. Something must have happened.

“Stop right there!”

Mapel shouted.

At the same time, she raised her sword. If the lizardman didn’t slow down soon, she wouldn’t hesitate to strike.

Fortunately, Xiron began slowing down a few dozen meters out, finally coming to a stop three to four meters in front of Mapel.

Then, staring directly at Owen, he spoke:

“It’s you—the human lord from before! We need your help.”

“Help?”

Owen’s expression turned serious instantly.

“What happened to your side?”

“Bloodthirst Wolves. Our tribe is under attack by a pack of Bloodthirst Wolves.”

“Bloodthirst Wolves?!”

Owen was shocked.

The border town was located right next to the Mysterious Forest. Hunters often ventured inside, and naturally, Owen was well informed about the forest’s dangerous creatures.

Among them, Bloodthirst Wolves were notorious.

In fact, there was a saying among the hunters:

“If you see a Bloodthirst Wolf—run. Run as fast as you can. Or you’re dead.”

That alone showed just how dangerous they were.

Owen didn’t hesitate for a second.

“Mapel, Take the knights stationed near the forest’s edge and go with this lizardman to provide immediate aid. Leave markings along the way—I’ll head to the northern wall and gather all available knights to follow behind you.”

“Yes, sir!”

Mapel responded without question.

She sheathed her sword, then turned to Xiron.

“Lead the way—now.”

Xiron gave a nod.

Just as the two were about to leave, a panting knight—one assigned to monitor the lizardmen—ran up out of breath.

“My apologies, Lord Marquis! This damned lizardman was too fast—I couldn’t stop him…”

“No matter”

Owen waved it off.

“You’ll go with Mapel and assist in aiding the lizardmen.”

“Understood!”

Without wasting another moment, the three of them rushed off toward the Mysterious Forest.

Owen then turned to one of the guards beside him:

“Go to the church immediately. Ask Bishop Flynn to send priests capable of faith-based magic to the forest entrance—have them stand by.”

“Yes, Lord Marquis!”

The guard ran off without delay.

“And you—get a horse ready for me!”

“Right away!”

The last guard turned and sprinted into the castle toward the stables.

For now, the only reliable force against the Bloodthirst Wolves was the knights.
The militia, who had just recently gotten their hands on weapons—actually, just wooden sticks—weren’t combat-ready yet.

As for explosives…
Those were reserved for use against the undead monsters.
