Chapter 64: Aren’t You Overthinking This?

The border between Lindor and neighboring countries wasn’t marked by a clearly drawn line. Instead, natural features like rivers and mountains served as the dividing lines.

Ideally, each country would construct walls even across flatlands to secure its borders. However, building border walls stretching for dozens of kilometers was logistically unrealistic, leading to the current setup.

At present, Lindor had become uninhabited. Every citizen—from royalty and nobility to commoners—had abandoned the nation and fled abroad.

This unclaimed territory, under normal circumstances, would have been highly desirable to any country. However, no nation dared lay claim to it.

The reason was simple: due to the effects of two successive otherworldly summoning rituals conducted in quick succession, all the magic power in Lindor’s land had been depleted, rendering it barren. No crops could grow there.

And it wasn’t just crops.

From the grass along the roadsides to the trees that had formed the forests, everything had withered away.

The resulting landscape resembled a vision of hell, leading other nations to perceive Lindor as if it had been cursed or punished by the heavens.

Because of this, no country wanted the land.

Still, it wasn’t something they could just ignore.

Even though the land was barren and devoid of people, the buildings remained intact.

These structures could easily become havens for criminal organizations.

Thus, each country tightened border security around Lindor even more than before.

For criminal groups, however, Lindor was an ideal location for a base of operations, with no inhabitants to hinder them. They constantly sought ways to breach the border.

To prevent such breaches, border patrols tirelessly combated these criminal groups daily.

Despite their efforts, a criminal organization had finally managed to breach the border and infiltrate Lindor.

How did they bypass the tight border security?

“Huff… Huff… Heh, heh, we did it! We finally swam across the river!”

They had crossed the river marking the border by swimming.

Though some were swept away by the current, over a dozen members successfully reached Lindor’s shores.

“Boss, where are we heading now?”

A subordinate asked the boss, who replied with a smirk.

“Obviously, to the capital. That’s where the royal castle is.”
“Yeah!”

The group cheered, energized by their boss’s confident declaration.

Unbeknownst to them, Lindor’s capital had been destroyed by Kenta once and rebuilt as a temporary royal castle. But no one corrected the boss.

Perhaps they didn’t know, or maybe they assumed the castle had been restored after four years.

Just as they finished dressing after crossing the river and were preparing to head to the capital, it happened.

“Huh? What’s that noise?”

The boss noticed an unfamiliar sound coming from above.

His words prompted the others to look toward the sky.

And then…

“…Huh?”

Those were the boss’s final words.

The sound they’d heard was the approach of a spell cast by Kenta.

By the time the spell came into view, the criminals had no chance to react.

The magic struck swiftly, engulfing them in a massive explosion.

The explosion was so intense that it reached the border patrol on the other side of the river, prompting them to hastily cross the river by boat and investigate the site.

“Ugh… This is…”

What greeted the patrol upon arrival were the mangled remains of the criminal group, obliterated by Kenta’s spell.

“Is this… the aftermath of magic?”

A younger patrol member, unfamiliar with large-scale magic attacks, muttered.

A veteran member confirmed with a grim nod.

“Yes, without a doubt. This scale… it has to be from him.”
“‘Him’… you mean…?”
“Yeah. I accompanied him during the invasion of the demon nation. I can recognize Kenta Maya’s magic anywhere.”

The younger patrol member’s eyes lit up with admiration.

“Being able to identify someone’s magic just from its traces… That’s amazing!”

The veteran awkwardly scratched his cheek.

“It’s not that impressive. There’s no one else, demon or otherwise, who could leave traces of magic on this scale. That’s why I’m sure it’s him.”
“I see…”

Kenta, now widely regarded as a global enemy, had left the patrol members in awe of the sheer destructive power of his magic.

“Sigh… It seems a criminal organization managed to breach the border.”
“These bodies… They’re from the organization?”
“We can’t say which one, but judging from their gear and belongings, they must be.”
“…We were so close to being the first country to let criminals invade Lindor.”

Although the criminals had technically breached the border, Kenta’s intervention had annihilated them. Thus, the patrol decided to act as if the breach had never occurred.

“Still, why did Maya help us out?”

From their perspective, Kenta had eliminated the criminals and saved them from the disgrace of being the first country to allow an invasion into Lindor.

“Who knows… Maybe he’s cooperating because our country was the only one to rescind his bounty.”

After all, they were from Weimar.

Kenta’s actual actions were far less noble than the assumptions made by the Weimar patrol. He eliminated the criminals, presumed to be part of an organized group attempting to cross the border, simply because he was bored. This reason, cruel and trivial as it was, made their guesses completely off the mark.

Nevertheless, while their interpretation was far from the truth, the fact remained that Kenta had saved them. Because of this, the Weimar patrol members felt a small sense of gratitude toward him at the time.

Afterward, there were several more instances where Kenta’s magic thwarted attempts by criminal organizations to infiltrate Lindor. Gradually, the Weimar patrol began to revere Kenta as a sort of guardian, someone who would not allow criminals to step foot into Lindor.

Even those who had previously resented the royal family for trying to appease Kenta and align with his wishes began to reconsider. Over time, they started to believe the royal family might have been wise in their judgment after all.

However, this sentiment was unique to Weimar. The situation unfolded differently in other nations.

Criminal organizations from other countries also began attempting to cross the borders into Lindor. Kenta, treating it almost like target practice, eliminated them one after another.

But in contrast to Weimar, people in other countries started to suspect that Kenta’s refusal to allow criminals into Lindor was because he intended to claim the land for himself.

This suspicion spiraled further, leading to speculation that Weimar and Kenta were secretly in collusion. As a result, relations between Weimar and other human nations began to deteriorate.

Thus, tensions in the world, centered around Kenta, continued to rise.

All of this unfolded without Kenta’s knowledge.
