Chapter 62: If No One Wants It, It’s Fine to Take It, Right?

“You can freely grow rice here.”

When I said this to Nara-kun, he looked around curiously with a puzzled expression.

“Is this a farming village? But there’s no one here, and no crops at all…”

The place had the appearance of a farming village, but there were no farmers or crops to be found.

I decided to explain the situation to the confused Nara-kun.

“Of course not. This is the village of Lindor.”

“…”

Hearing my explanation, Nara-kun’s face turned apologetic.

“Isn’t that basically looting from disaster victims…?”

“Why would it be? The farmers here ran away with their belongings, right? If they abandoned their rights and left the land, what’s wrong with us using it?”

This place was now unclaimed, free land. After all, the country that once governed it no longer existed.

As I reminded him of this fact, Nara-kun let out an “Ah,” finally seeming to understand.

“You’ve got a point. All right, Jonas-san, let’s get started!”

Now that Nara-kun was on board, he called out to Jonas, who had been brought along to teach farming techniques. But Jonas, crouching down and touching the soil, wore a grim expression.

“…I came here because Kenta-dono said it was a good spot, but… Kenta-dono.”

“What?”

“This place won’t do. The soil is dead. Nothing will grow in soil like this.”

As expected from Jonas, a professional farmer—he immediately spotted the issue with the land.

But…

“Yeah, I know this soil won’t work as it is.”

After all, that was why Lindor had fallen in the first place.

“If you knew that, then why…”

“There’s a method that might restore the soil, and I want to give it a try.”

When I said that, Jonas widened his eyes in surprise.

“You’re saying you can revive soil like this? How…?”

“The reason the land in Lindor became barren is that the summoning magic circle drained the magic energy from the soil across the entire country.”

Not just Lindor, but even parts of neighboring countries were affected. The second summoning in such a short span had been catastrophic.

Thinking about it, even the first summoning must have caused significant damage. Maybe there had been reports of declining harvests from farming villages back then. But if the royal family and the upper classes had dismissed those warnings as trivial, it wouldn’t be surprising.

In any case, the problem was caused by the soil losing its magical energy. If that’s the cause…

“Then all we have to do is replenish the magic energy.”

I crouched down and began channeling magic into the barren field.

Rather than simply pouring out magic recklessly, I carefully infused it into the soil, ensuring it mixed evenly.

After spending some time doing this, I had Jonas check the soil again.

Jonas, who had been skeptical, widened his eyes as soon as he touched the soil I had treated.

“What!? The soil! The soil is alive again!”

“Really? Is that true?”

Nara-kun, hearing this, also touched the soil like Jonas had.

Then, with a serious expression, he said:

“…I can’t tell the difference.”

I knew it.

“Compare it to the soil from another field that hasn’t been treated yet. You’ll see the difference.”

“Oh, okay.”

Following my instructions, Nara-kun grabbed some soil from an untreated field. A moment later, his eyes widened.

“What!? This is amazing! It’s completely different!”

Looks like he finally noticed.

Nara-kun, being someone who trains in magic, could perceive differences in magic energy. But Jonas, being a human who isn’t adept at controlling magic, could still sense the change in the soil. That’s impressive—Jonas really is a capable guy.

“This is the solution I mentioned. If the soil is useless because it’s lost its magic, we just need to replenish it.”

“But then… why didn’t Lindor do that?”

Nara-kun’s question made me sigh. Wasn’t it obvious?

“They couldn’t. As you saw, you have to carefully infuse the magic into the soil, making sure it blends evenly. It’s impossible for humans with limited magic reserves. Even among demons, there probably aren’t many who could pull this off.”

The process of restoring the soil required a level of precise magic control that was far beyond most people, even those skilled in magic.

“Anyway, I’ll restore the soil in all the fields here. Jonas, teach Nara-kun how to make a paddy field.”

“Got it.”

“Thank you, Jonas-san!”

While Jonas taught Nara-kun how to construct a paddy field, I went around the village and infused magic into all the fields.

By the time the two of them had started constructing the paddy field, I had finished restoring all the soil.

“Wow, Nara-kun, having someone who can use magic is incredibly handy. We filled the paddy field with water in no time.”

“Hehe, that’s because I’ve been trained by Maya-san.”

“Ah…”

When Nara-kun proudly mentioned my training, Jonas gave him a pitying look.

“W-What’s that look for?”

“Oh, nothing… I just realized Nara-kun’s had it rough too.”

When Jonas said this, Nara-kun gave me a sidelong glance.

“Maya-san.”

“What?”

“What did you do to Jonas-san? He just looked at me like I’m some kind of tragic figure.”

“Nothing. I didn’t do anything to Jonas.”

And that was the truth.

Because Jonas is a capable guy.

“You didn’t do anything… to Jonas-san?”

Oh no, he caught on.

“Yeah, when Kenta-dono first came to our village, the village chief’s son was the one who dealt with him… I’ll just say, watching that scene was… well, it was something else. The poor guy got chewed out so bad I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.”

“Wait, Jonas-san, did you just almost say you felt ‘sorry’ about it?”

“Yeah, that’s pretty much how it went.”

“…The village chief’s son is useless at work, but he acts all high and mighty just because he’s the chief’s son.”

Oh, so we’re just skipping over that and continuing the story.

“Nobody could say anything to him because he was the village chief’s son, but Kenta-dono didn’t care about any of that. He kept hitting him with tough questions, and the guy couldn’t answer a single one. In the end, Kenta-dono mocked him thoroughly. That made him snap…”

“…Against Maya-san?”

“Yes… against Kenta-dono.”

“I can pretty much guess how this ends, but go ahead, tell me.”

“Alright, then. The chief’s son tried to attack Kenta-dono, but Kenta-dono easily took him down. The guy was about to be killed when the chief begged for his life, and that somehow resolved the situation.”

“Wow… that’s exactly what I imagined would happen.”

Nara-kun, you’re starting to talk like Jonas.

“Still, it’s surprising that Maya-san let that slide. Isn’t he the kind of person who kills anyone who defies him on the spot?”

“What’s this ‘on-the-spot killing’ thing? That’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

“No, seriously, it almost happened. The chief stepped in at the last second.”

Wait, did he just skip over my comment? Oh well, it’s Jonas, so I’ll let it slide.

“Whoa, so it was a life-or-death situation? Did that move his heart or something?”

“Nope. Kenta-dono said, ‘There’s no way someone who leaves a useless guy like this in charge deserves to be chief. If you want to save this guy, you’ll have to step down as chief.’ So, right there on the spot, the chief was fired, and I became the new village chief.”

“What?! Jonas-san, you were the village chief!?”

Jonas was the most competent guy in that village. I appointed him on the spot.

“Yeah. After that, the village atmosphere improved a lot, and everyone in the village became grateful to Kenta-dono.”

“Wow, so that’s what happened.”

“Yeah. That’s why, when I heard Nara-kun endured Kenta-dono’s strict training, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for you.”

I wouldn’t call it strict.

I just asked the obvious questions, and when I didn’t get obvious answers, I got angry.

I’m not giving Nara-kun any unreasonable instructions either.

“Haha, but Maya-san has never given me unreasonable instructions.”

When Nara-kun said that, Jonas looked at me with admiration.

“I knew it. That bounty must be some kind of mistake.”

“Huh? Jonas-san, you knew Maya-san was a wanted criminal?”

Whoa, Nara-kun, isn’t that a bit of a rude question?

“Haha, are you surprised that I got that information all the way out here in this remote mountain village?”

“No, no! I just thought Jonas-san might not know, since you’re treating Maya-san so normally.”

“Oh, that’s what you meant. Well, I only found out after Kenta-dono came to our village. Even then, I figured it had to be a mistake. That’s why, even after he visited several more times, I treated him just like normal.”

I first went to Jonas’s village after I’d half-destroyed Lindor and escaped.

I’d read about a past summoned person who had experimented with making Japanese food in a remote mountain village in Tanda. Since my top priority was escaping, I fled to a village that no one should have known about.

For the record, I met Meyleen after that.

At first, I had a bizarre encounter in the village, but after that, Jonas and the others treated me very kindly.

That’s why, even though the rice there isn’t great, I regularly go back to buy miso, soy sauce, and pickled vegetables.

As a way of repaying their kindness.

Not that I’d ever say that out loud.

Jonas seems to sense it, too, and doesn’t say anything unnecessary to Nara-kun.

As expected of Jonas, a capable man.

While chatting about such things, we completed the rice paddy. I cast a plant growth acceleration spell, and that wrapped up the day’s work.

From there, we started the days of crop improvement—and I resolved to teach Nara-kun teleportation magic, no matter what.

At this point, betrayal or whatever doesn’t matter anymore.

It’s just way too much of a hassle otherwise!
