Chapter 58: The Downfall of Lindor

The temporary royal castle of the Lindor Kingdom housed the king’s office.

Inside, King Lindor sat at his desk, burying his head in his hands as report after report flooded in.

“…Why? Why has it come to this?”

For months, the reports brought to the king had all been the same.

The desolation of the land, which had started near the Summoning Ruins, had spread rapidly across the entirety of Lindor and even affected parts of neighboring countries.

As the soil turned barren, crops withered en masse in Lindor’s rural villages. Staples like wheat, along with other crops like potatoes, became completely unharvestable.

Even as tax collectors scoured the villages, they found no food to take.

In some cases, the tax collectors attempted to seize the farmers’ food by force but were met with resistance—and often killed.

Such incidents were numerous.

The slaying of a government official, such as a tax collector, would normally warrant the destruction of the offending village. However, the sheer volume of these cases overwhelmed the kingdom’s ability to respond.

The result was widespread rebellion in the farming villages.

Reports of uprisings and attacks on noble estates arrived daily at the king’s office.

The atmosphere in the royal capital was dire.

As food shipments to the city ceased, the situation became critical.

The price of wheat skyrocketed to unprecedented levels, and violent skirmishes broke out over bread.

With security in the capital deteriorating rapidly, more and more citizens abandoned Lindor, seeking refuge in other nations.

Even nations that had previously ostracized Lindor in the international community extended humanitarian aid in response to the crisis. Yet, this did little to alleviate Lindor’s suffering, as domestic food production remained non-existent.

To make matters worse, some nations that Lindor believed were providing free humanitarian aid later revealed it to be loans.

Many of these nations were themselves affected by the desolation.

Though outraged at being taken advantage of, Lindor had no choice but to accept these terms.

As a result, the kingdom found itself drowning in debt—so much so that its very survival as a nation became uncertain.

“Why… Why has it come to this…? I’ve done nothing wrong… On the contrary, I’ve been working tirelessly to rebuild this country…”

Just as Lindor began to recover with aid from Admos, this catastrophic famine struck, leaving the kingdom teetering on the brink of collapse.

“Damn it… Damn it all! This is all the fault of the former royal family! It’s their fault for scorning Maya-sama, for trying to eliminate him and getting their just deserts! For failing to warn against summoning otherworlders repeatedly! It’s all their fault!”

The king swept the documents off his desk in a fit of rage, shouting his grievances against the former royal family.

The king’s aides were present in the office, but none attempted to calm him.

They shared the king’s frustrations.

They, too, believed that had King Lindor treated Kenta with even a semblance of respect—like the King of Admos did—they might have avoided this disaster.

That they were only willing to show superficial respect highlighted how similar they were in mindset to the former royal family.

After venting his rage, the king slumped into his chair, breathing heavily.

Once his breath steadied, he stared into the void and let out a long sigh before murmuring softly:

“…It’s time to end this.”

The aides widened their eyes in shock.

“Your Majesty… Surely you don’t mean to… abandon the kingdom?”

One aide asked in a trembling voice.

The king gave a small, bitter laugh before replying:

“It’s over. Soon, this kingdom will collapse from within. And with no crops to grow, the land will be deserted. What remains will be a vast, uninhabited wasteland.”

He spread his arms wide, as if mocking himself.

Perhaps he was mocking himself.

His face twisted into a self-deprecating smile, one that teetered on the edge of madness.

The aides, initially angered by the king’s words, quickly bowed their heads and refrained from saying more.

“Now then, if that’s decided, we must act quickly. If we linger, the citizens might storm the castle demanding access to the royal food stores.”

“Understood! We’ll make the necessary arrangements immediately!”

“I’m counting on you. By the way, where do you think would make a good place for asylum?”

One day, the citizens of Lindor received shocking news.

The king had abandoned the kingdom and sought asylum in another nation.

Enraged, the citizens stormed the royal castle.

And what the citizens witnessed there…

The royal castle had been completely emptied of food, valuables, and anything of worth, leaving behind nothing but a hollow shell.

The citizens stood in stunned silence, unable to process the extent of the situation.

For a time, they were dumbfounded by the sheer irresponsibility of the Lindor royal family’s actions. Then, one of them broke the silence, declaring, “I’m leaving for another country!” and began running.

This sparked a chain reaction, with the others following suit, fleeing Lindor for foreign lands.

The exodus wasn’t limited to the capital. Nobles from various regions, as well as farmers from rural villages, abandoned the land they were born and raised in and escaped abroad.

Thus, four years after Kenta had been summoned to the Lindor Kingdom, the nation vanished from the map.

The land was so barren and desolate that even neighboring countries gave up on occupying it. Just as King Lindor had predicted, the former territory of the Lindor Kingdom became an uninhabited wasteland, a forgotten ruin that no one dared to tread upon.
