Chapter 56: Lindor’s King Shortsightedness
◆◆◆
“I appreciate you accommodating my request this time, King Lindor.”
In a chamber of Lindor Kingdom’s temporary royal castle, the King of Admos spoke magnanimously to King Lindor.
His attitude showed no hint of genuine remorse, but Lindor had received considerable support from Admos and was in no position to object.
“No, no, King Admos, you’ve always been a great help to us. This is a trivial matter.”
“Is that so?”
Feeling pleased with King Lindor’s submissiveness, King Admos nodded curtly, his expression one of satisfaction.
For Lindor, who had risen to kingship from high nobility due to his royal connections, keeping a polite smile was a small price to pay for maintaining Admos’s goodwill.
“Well then, shall we head to the summoning ruins at once?”
“Indeed. Time is precious. Let’s take care of business and return swiftly.”
Agreeing with King Lindor’s words, King Admos prepared to proceed to the ruins.
Normally, hosting a foreign king would involve elaborate ceremonies and events, but the Admos delegation had refused any such arrangements.
Though a day or two wouldn’t make a significant difference, King Admos was impatient to summon the next chosen one as soon as possible.
The loss of Nara had been a considerable blow to King Admos.
Conveniently, he had forgotten that it was his own recklessness in sending the unprepared Nara to Kenta that caused the failure.
As King Admos and King Lindor headed for the ruins, a Lindor royal advisor approached the latter on the way to the carriage.
“…Your Majesty, may I have a moment?”
“Hmm? What is it? Ah, my apologies, King Admos. Would you mind heading to the carriage ahead of me?”
“Very well.”
After instructing King Admos to proceed, King Lindor stepped aside with his advisor.
“What is it at a time like this?”
King Lindor reprimanded his advisor, who responded in a hushed, serious tone.
“…Are you certain about this?”
There seemed to be layers of meaning in his words: questioning if it was right to continue conceding to King Admos’s demands.
“Oh, is this about that report?”
“Yes… I visited the site personally, and there are definite signs of abnormalities. Perhaps we should observe the situation further.”
“I understand your concern, but…”
King Lindor wasn’t entirely deaf to his advisor’s warnings.
However, Lindor’s current survival as a nation depended on Admos’s support.
Refusing Admos’s demands, especially one as painless as granting access to the summoning circle, seemed unthinkable.
“Once this summoning is complete, King Admos will likely calm down. There’s no way he’ll fail twice in a row.”
“I hope you’re right…”
The advisor, being loyal to Lindor, harbored neither respect nor trust for King Admos.
Having already lost the previous summoned person, the advisor doubted King Admos’s judgment entirely.
After rejoining King Admos, King Lindor boarded the carriage to the ruins.
However, during the journey, the scenery caught his breath.
“What… is this?”
“Hm? What’s wrong, King Lindor?”
“N-no, it’s nothing…”
King Lindor recognized the landscape from reports.
But seeing it with his own eyes left him speechless.
The once-thriving vegetation had vanished entirely, leaving behind a desolate wasteland.
King Lindor, who had planned to survey the area on the way to the ruins, noticed the strange sight as he peered outside. Meanwhile, King Admos, unaware of the devastation, remained oblivious.
Internally, King Lindor wrestled with his thoughts: (What should I do? Can we proceed with this summoning? If this scene spreads further… But I can’t refuse Admos’s demands…)
It was at that moment.
“!? What’s going on!?”
A tremendous roar reached the carriage, loud enough to shake everyone to their core.
The horses, startled by the noise, came to a sudden halt, bringing the entire party to a standstill.
“Damn it! What in the world is going on!?”
King Admos, startled by the deafening sound, stormed out of the carriage, his anger palpable.
“Wait, King Admos! We must confirm what’s happening first—”
Before King Lindor could finish, a powerful shockwave struck the group.
“Gaaahhh!!”
“Wahhh!!”
King Admos, who had just stepped out of the carriage, was flung through the air, while King Lindor, still inside, was tossed about as the carriage overturned.
Inside the violently capsized carriage, King Lindor was thrown around, but thanks to a guard who quickly shielded him, he escaped any serious injuries.
“Your Majesty! Are you hurt!?”
“Ugh… ow… No, thanks to your quick thinking, I’m unharmed.”
Hearing this, the guard let out a sigh of relief before immediately turning serious and scanning their surroundings.
“What on earth just happened?”
“I don’t know. Can you assess the situation outside?”
“Understood! Please wait a moment!”
The guard exited through the door that had been blown off by the explosion.
And then—
“What… what is this!?”
The guard couldn’t help but shout as he surveyed the scene.
“What’s wrong? Is it safe to come out?”
“Please… just a moment…”
After carefully assessing the surroundings, the guard turned back to King Lindor.
“It seems the danger has passed. You may step out now.”
“Alright.”
Stepping out of the carriage, King Lindor was met with a sight that defied imagination.
Wrecked carriages, lifeless horses, and scattered people littered the area. Groans of pain echoed from every direction.
Some of the horses were still alive, though many lay motionless. The same was true for the people—some writhed in pain, calling for help, while others remained completely still.
The scene resembled hell itself, rendering King Lindor momentarily speechless.
“Wh-what is this…?”
His voice trembled as he muttered, but no one answered. The chaos was too overwhelming.
While King Lindor took in the catastrophic scene, one of his guards suddenly noticed something and directed his gaze to a specific spot.
“T-that…!”
“What is it!?”
Following the guard’s line of sight, King Lindor turned and gasped in shock.
“The ruins… they’re gone…”
What lay before him was the site of the summoning ruins, now obliterated and reduced to nothing.
“There are concentric blast marks radiating from the ruins. It’s likely… they were destroyed by someone.”
Looking closely, King Lindor also noticed the evidence of an explosion originating from the center of the ruins.
“Someone, you say… Who do you think it was?”
King Lindor asked, already having a strong suspicion in mind.
“This scene… I’ve seen it before.”
The guard’s simple response confirmed what King Lindor feared.
“So it was them.”
It was obvious to anyone analyzing the situation.
The purpose of this otherworldly summoning was to defeat Kenta.
If such summons were repeated over and over, someone would inevitably intervene.
Yet, even so, King Lindor couldn’t shake a lingering doubt.
“That’s the only explanation I can think of… but how did Maya-dono find out about it?”
“…I’m not certain, but it’s likely due to poor information management on Admos’ side…”
Hearing this, King Lindor finally remembered.
“That’s right! What about King Admos!?”
“!?”
At King Lindor’s exclamation, the guards also realized they had forgotten about Admos and immediately began searching for him.
Not long after starting the search, they found King Admos, battered and motionless.
The sight sent a chill down King Lindor’s spine, but upon confirming that Admos was barely alive, he let out a sigh of relief.
If King Admos had died in Lindor, it would have been grounds for war between the two nations.
Though severely injured, the fact that he was alive avoided the worst-case scenario.
Still, the situation was far from ideal.
It was clear that Lindor had failed to protect King Admos.
To deflect responsibility, King Lindor decided to shift the blame onto someone else.
“Everyone, listen well! The destruction of the summoning ruins was undoubtedly the work of the previous summoner, Kenta Maya! To prevent us from summoning someone to defeat him, he destroyed the ruins completely! Such barbaric actions are utterly unforgivable!”
This was the declaration King Lindor made.
While it was true that Kenta was responsible, the motive he attributed was entirely incorrect.
Unaware of the true reason, King Lindor felt relieved that he could shift the blame for Admos’ injuries onto Kenta.
However, what he didn’t realize was that he had unknowingly earned Kenta’s wrath in the process.
