Chapter 52: Come to Think of It, That Was My Previous Job
“I heard that Admos is going to request the next otherworld summoning from Lindor.”
Ivern said, unloading his bags.
Upon hearing that, Narakun, who had been receiving the bags, stared at Ivern intently.
“Ivern-san, you really look like a traveling merchant.”
Nara remarked.
“What? Now you’re saying that too?”
Ivern replied, and with a playful grin, he put Nara in a headlock.
“Ah! Please stop, Ivern-san!”
Nara cried out.
“Shut up. That’s what you get for being so cheeky!”
Ivern said as the two continued to joke around.
“Stop fooling around and get to work. We’ve got more stuff now that we have two new residents, right?”
Immediately, both of them separated and walked toward me.
“Sorry, sorry.”
“My apologies.”
They said as they began organizing the bags.
I watched them, a little puzzled.
“Wow, you two really get along well. How come you’re so in sync?”
It had only been a few days since Nara moved here, but already, his relationship with Ivern felt like that of a senior and junior who had been together for years.
“How come? Well, we have something in common.”
“Something in common?”
I asked, tilting my head in confusion.
Ivern smirked and answered.
“We both got spared after opposing you.”
“Should I just kill you here and now?”
“Hey, don’t make a joke out of it. The fact that we weren’t killed by Maya means we think alike, right?”
Ivern said, casually laughing.
“…Is that so?”
I asked, unsure.
“Yeah, that’s how it is.”
Ivern confirmed.
I didn’t really get it.
While continuing to talk nonsense, Ivern and I divided up the goods he had brought back. Nara and his partner still didn’t have their house finished, so they were staying with me. As such, I distributed their belongings around my place.
“Your house will be finished soon, huh?”
“Yeah.”
“Magic is amazing. The house was built so quickly.”
“Speaking of which, how’s your magic training going, Nara-kun? Are you getting the hang of controlling your magic power?”
When I first used magic to build Nara-kun’s house, his eyes had been sparkling with excitement. Considering that when he arrived, his eyes were dull, it seemed like he was gradually recovering mentally as well.
Seeing Nara getting excited about magic, I began to teach him. It wasn’t out of kindness, though. If he could use magic, that would add to our fighting strength. I figured that now that he was interested in magic, he would quickly pick it up.
However, Nara, who had come from a human country where magic was a rarity, couldn’t even control the magic power needed to form magic constructs at first. So, I started by teaching him how to control his magic power, which was basic training. Even though it was just the basics, for Nara, who had come from a world without magic, it seemed to be an exciting event. Since then, he had been practicing every day.
“Magic is so fun! I’m starting to get a lot better at controlling my magic power!”
Nara said with excitement.
No, no, Nara-kun.
That’s still not magic.
You’re just training to use magic;
It’s not actually magic training yet.
Well, there’s no point in saying that to Nara, who doesn’t know anything about magic. There’s no reason to bring his motivation down, so I decided not to correct him.
Thanks to that, Nara seems to be enjoying himself every day.
“I see. That’s good.”
Nara gave a wry smile in response.
“Even so, it’s ironic that the one who thought magic was impossible and didn’t try it, is now getting proper magic lessons.”
“Ah, the other one?”
“Yeah. They said they would become unbeatable once they could use magic, but in the end, they didn’t learn anything. Who would have thought that such basic training was necessary?”
With that, Narakun began gathering magic energy in his palm.
“Of course. Without magic power, you can’t build magic. It’s like trying to use a handheld game console without a battery.”
Nara nodded, as if understanding.
“You’re right! Magic power is like the battery. Then, what’s the body and software?”
“The body is your own body, and the software is the magic structure.”
“Like a program?”
“Exactly. So depending on the structure, you can do anything. But that’s only possible if there’s a body to connect the magic power and the structure.”
“I understand! I’ll make sure to increase my battery capacity!”
Nara-kun said enthusiastically.
“Good.”
This explanation was very well received by Nara, but for Ivern and the people from this world, it was completely incomprehensible.
“Seriously, I can’t understand anything you guys talk about.”
“Well, of course not. We’re talking using knowledge from our original world.”
If you understood it, you’d be a reincarnate too.
“Anyway, Ivern, if they’re going to perform another otherworld summoning, what about the other summoner that was left?”
Ivern shrugged his shoulders.
“Who knows?”
“Useless.”
I muttered.
“Oh? What, you wanna go?”
“I could, but you’d die.”
“Yeah, probably best not to.”
“You two seem to get along so well.”
Nara remarked, having overheard our exchange.
“Huh? How? We’re talking about whether or not to kill each other.”
To my surprise, Ivern gave a wry smile.
“That’s become your catchphrase, hasn’t it? And it’s the kind of thing that can suddenly become a reality.”
“Yikes.”
“Ugh, whatever. Just finish unpacking already.”
After we finished organizing the goods, we gathered in the living room to take a break.
There, Eva, whom Nara and I had brought from Admos, was also sitting.
Eva, being a princess, had never done any housework, so in that regard, she wasn’t much help. However, she was always willing to play with Leon and Ayla.
Thanks to that, Meyleen and Yulia were able to have some time for themselves, and they were incredibly grateful to Eva.
…Though, I think Eva just likes playing with kids.
Anyway, there was a reason we were all taking a break together, and that reason was to tell Eva that her home country of Admos was planning to perform another otherworld summoning.
When Ivern shared the information he had gathered in town with Eva, she froze for a moment before her expression twisted with anger.
“To think they would treat people like this… As expected, my father was a ruthless man!! I was right to part ways with them!!”
Eva, the former princess, had been raised freely due to being the youngest daughter, and it seemed that she didn’t usually doubt others. Perhaps because she loved heroic tales, she despised ruthless actions.
It seems that Eva couldn’t forgive the King of Admos for treating Nara and Ota as failures and planning to summon the next person. Despite being her father, she harshly insulted him.
“So, what should we do? Just sit here and wait for the next person to be summoned, or…”
I trailed off, and Nara grinned.
“Of course. We’re going to interfere.”
Just like when I had suggested it before, Nara was highly motivated to disrupt the summoning. While part of it was likely revenge against Admos, it was also to prevent more victims from being caused by the summoning.
Honestly, I didn’t mind either way. I was even a bit curious about the effects of a second summoning in such a short time. After all, the irregularity of summoning two people at once had already occurred.
However, Eva, the former princess, wouldn’t tolerate such an outcome.
“Of course, let’s stop the summoning! No, let’s destroy the summoning magic circle! That way, we can prevent any more victims like Maya-sama or Mitsuhiko-sama!”
Poor Ota-kun was naturally ignored in the process.
Well, I didn’t particularly care, but because Eva was so passionate about stopping the summoning, the group decided to act and prevent it.
“Then, the next step is finding out when Admos plans to head to Lindor. Ivern, go gather information.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no way I can do that.”
Why not?
If we don’t have accurate information, we’ll just be wasting time waiting in Lindora.
“Huh? Ivern-san, you’re good at that kind of thing, right?”
See, Nara agrees.
“That’s not it! I just gather information spreading in town. I can’t investigate the country’s movements!”
Ugh, useless.
So, what should we do? We all tilted our heads, pondering the next step.
“Then, I’ll go.”
Came a voice.
It was Mona.
Ah, now that I think about it, she might be perfect for the task.
Ivern also seemed to agree with Mona’s suggestion and nodded, but Nara tilted his head.
“Why Mona?”
“Mona was once a member of the intelligence division of the former demon race country.”
“Eh!?”
When I explained Mona’s past, Nara was visibly surprised. Mona, in turn, bowed to him respectfully.
“As a former member of the intelligence division, information gathering is my area of expertise. Please, allow me to take care of this important task.”
As Mona spoke, bowing, I gave her a command.
“Alright. Then go to Admos and find out when they plan to leave for Lindor.”
“Understood.”
After she said this, Mona raised her head and extended her hand toward me.
“What?”
“I need a convenient tool.”
“…”
She had become quite bold.
Certainly, our house had many magic tools not found elsewhere. She must have thought there were tools that could be useful for espionage.
And indeed, there were.
“You’re so sly. Here.”
I handed her the item, and Mona looked at it with a puzzled expression.
“What is this?”
“This is…”
I stood up and walked to the corner of the room.
I then took out the same item I had given to Mona and turned on the switch.
“This is a tool that lets you talk to someone far away.”
“!!”
What I handed to Mona was a walkie-talkie.
It wasn’t a cellphone, and for talking to a specific person, I thought this would suffice, so I made it. There is also telepathy magic, but it’s a magic only I can use.
Mona can’t use it either.
So, this walkie-talkie was a tool that contained that telepathy magic.
By the way, it works regardless of distance.
“…This is amazing. With this, reporting will be much easier.”
Mona seemed unusually excited about this tool, which was perfect for espionage.
“Yeah, and here, take this too.”
I handed Mona another item.
“What’s this? This board?”
“This is… you place it on the ground like this, hook your toes here… and when it activates…”
“!? It’s floating!?”
This was a skateboard without wheels.
With this, traveling would become much easier.
“Thank you. With this, espionage activities will be much more convenient.”
“Just don’t let anyone see you flying, okay?”
“Understood. I’ll start practicing right away.”
Mona said this and quickly left the room with the walkie-talkie and the skateboard… or should I call it a flying board?
With that, it seemed like we’d be able to gather real-time information.
When I turned my gaze back to the group, Nara was looking at me with a very greedy expression.
“Maya-san! Maya-san!”
“What is it?”
“I want one of those too!”
“Which one?”
“The flying one!”
“Ah, the flying board.”
“Exactly!”
“Shut up. What are you going to do with that thing if you don’t even have a purpose for it?”
“I want to play with it!”
Ah, it seems like the high school boy in Narakun was really excited about it.
“No.”
“Come on! Please give me one!”
“Shut up. Figure it out yourself.”
“Maya-eemon!!”
“What is it, Mitsuta-kun?”
I could have sworn I saw imaginary glasses on Nara-kun’s face.
In the end, I gave in to the persistent Mitsuta-kun… I mean, Nara-kun, and handed him a flying board as a recreational item.
Nara, overjoyed, ran out into the yard to practice, while Ivern watched with a serious expression.
“…What’s Maya-eemon and Mitsuta-kun?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
