Chapter 48: Nara’s Resolve

“By the way, you didn’t mention it earlier—how did Maya-san and Meyleen end up meeting under those circumstances?”

After confirming the infiltration route to Admos Castle with Nara, we took a short break, during which he asked the question.

“Oh yeah, I never explained that. Meyleen, is it okay if I share the story?”

Since the story involved Meyleen, I needed her permission to discuss it. But when I turned to ask her, she wasn’t at her seat.

“Meyleen?”

“Yes?”

Her voice came from the kitchen.

Curious, I walked into the kitchen and found her nursing Leon, who had woken up at some point.

“What’s up?”

Still nursing Leon, Meyleen looked at me and asked casually.

“Ah, Nara was asking about what happened after that. I’d have to mention you in the story, so I wanted to get your okay.”

“Sure, I don’t mind.”

Meyleen spoke while keeping her eyes fixed on Leon. Her calm demeanor showed she truly had no reservations about the topic.

The story involves her being driven from the throne of the demon kingdom, but she seems completely unattached to it.

“Alright then, I’ll just…”

“Maya-san, what’s going o—GAAH! My eyes! My eyes!!”

As Nara started to step into the kitchen, I instinctively used a blinding spell on him.

He clutched his face, writhing on the ground like a certain infamous colonel, shouting in agony.

After some time spent rolling on the floor, Nara still wasn’t getting up, apparently having sustained significant damage.

With no other choice, I used healing magic to restore his sight.

“Ahh… finally, I can see again…”

Slowly, Nara stood up, but Ivern, watching nearby, had a strained look on his face.

“You blinded him to the point of needing healing magic?”

“He’s fine now.”

“Yeah, I’m fine… but my eyes won’t stop tearing up.”

Though his vision had returned, tears were streaming uncontrollably from his eyes.

Well, it’s the eyes—what can you expect?

“But you’re better now.”

“If we’re talking about being able to see, then yes… But why’d you blind me in the first place?”

“Meyleen was nursing Leon.”

“…Oh. My bad, I’m so sorry.”

Just moments ago, Nara had been glaring at me resentfully. Now, upon hearing my explanation, he bowed his head in apology.

“Be mindful that there’s another baby in this house.”

“Exactly! If someone saw Yulia in a similar situation, even I wouldn’t sta—OW! Ayla, don’t bite my nipple!”

“…I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.”

“Ah, got it.”

Yulia’s impeccable timing never ceases to amaze me.

Lately, Ayla’s teeth have been coming in, and she seems to gnaw on Yulia’s nipple during feedings to soothe the irritation.

And every time, Yulia’s scream echoes throughout the house.

“Anyway, you were asking how Meyleen and I reunited, right?”

“After all that, you can just pick up the story?”

“That’s life in a house with kids.”

“I… guess so. Alright, let’s hear it.”

Once Nara was ready to listen, I recounted the story of my reunion with Meyleen.

How she had once ascended to the throne as queen of the demon kingdom but was overthrown by her brother’s rebellion.

How Mona had secretly helped her escape.

And how I, who had been fleeing as a globally wanted fugitive, encountered her soon after.

“Whoa… that’s like something out of a drama.”

“Right? We thought it was fate, and, well, we became close that very night.”

“Yeah, I get it. When I came back from the battlefield and Eva showed me kindness, I fell for her right away.”

“Yeah, after life-or-death situations, that kind of thing happens.”

Nara and Ivern joined in on my story.

“Well, that’s how I ended up traveling with Meyleen. After wandering all over, we finally settled here.”

“Huh. What about Ivern-san?”

“This guy? He’s a former explorer. When the townsfolk found out I, a wanted man, was living here, they hired him to take me out.”

When I said this, Nara’s face lit up with shock.

“Seriously…? How did you survive?”

“By a hair. If I hadn’t listened carefully to Kenta’s advice, I’d be dead. Actually, every bounty hunter who came here before him disappeared.”

“…Wow. You’re really lucky to still be alive.”

“And so are you, Nara. You’re living on the edge too, you know.”

Hearing that, Nara instinctively stepped back from me.

“If you had attacked me without a second thought, I wouldn’t have hesitated to kill you. But when you saw my face, you lost your will to fight, didn’t you?”

“Well… at the time, I didn’t feel any hostility from you, Maya-san. Plus, since we’re from the same homeland, I thought maybe you weren’t as bad as people say.”

“That intuition is priceless. That’s exactly what people in this world lack.”

Seriously, most people here are hopeless.

They think they’re always right, refuse to change their mindset, and can’t understand others’ feelings.

“By the way, can I ask you something, Nara?”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“When you were summoned here, wasn’t there someone else with you? What happened to them?”

At my question, Nara’s face immediately soured.

“That guy’s hopeless. He said he wasn’t suited for swordsmanship and decided to practice magic instead. But you know as well as I do, Maya-san—there’s no one here who can teach magic to humans.”

“Yeah, I get it. So what’s he doing now?”

“…He spends every day inviting women to his room. Apparently, he’s learned some small magic tricks, so now he’s living out some harem protagonist fantasy with them.”

Wow, what a loser.

Is he one of those types? The kind who wants to say, ‘I came to another world and now I’m super popular.’

“Really? Then I guess we don’t need to worry about him.”

“Probably not. He’s useless. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets abandoned soon.”

“Yeah, if he’s just messing around like that… But wait, how did he even get permission for that? Are the women from the castle staff? That’s way too lenient.”

“No, not from the castle. They’re from a brothel.”

“Professionals, huh.”

So the country’s funding this?

I’m not against that line of work, but it’s ridiculous that while some are risking their lives, others are indulging in pleasures like that.

This world’s not the only one with idiots, apparently.

“If he’s not producing results, he’ll probably be cut loose soon.”

“You think so?”

“Of course. The only reason he’s been tolerated so far is probably because you were there, Nara.”

“Me?”

“Yeah. You must’ve grown more than expected, giving them hope that maybe he had potential too. But if you betray Admos and come here…”

“…Then the freeloader will be abandoned.”

“Exactly. So what’s your plan? Are you still planning to run away?”

Nara thought for a moment, then shook his head.

“No. After hearing your story, Maya-san, I can’t trust the royals of this world. I’ve already noticed hints of their true nature… So, I’ll follow your example. I couldn’t care less about this world anymore.”

Watching Nara declare that, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Ha, haha! Hahaha! That’s great, Nara! You’re the best!”

“Th-thank you.”

“Well, they might still deal with that other guy… What’s his name again?”

“Oh, Ota. Yuto Ota.”

“Ota, huh. Whether they dispose of him or banish him, they might just summon someone new if they let him go.”

When I said that, Nara’s face lit up with shock.

“Th-then… someone else will be forced into the summoning ritual again…”

“Right? Unforgivable, isn’t it?”

Such recklessness cannot be allowed to continue.

“So, if Admos tries to make a move, let’s sabotage them. Honestly, I wanted to destroy that summoning circle before we left, but there just wasn’t enough time.”

When I said that, Nara grinned.

“Sounds good. I don’t think we’ll get punished for doing something like that.”

Man, I love Nara’s easygoing attitude.

As the two of us summoned individuals were making plans, Ivern let out a big sigh.

“Seriously… you’re always so energetic when you’re up to no good.”

“That’s a bad way to put it, Ivern. This is a holy war for us summoned ones!”

“That’s so epic!”

Caught up in some inexplicable hype, Nara and I exchanged a confident nod. Ivern, on the other hand, heaved another heavy sigh in exasperation.

“…It’s just petty harassment, isn’t it?”

Well, he’s not wrong.
