Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 34: A Warning from the Princess

“The princess wants to meet me?”

One day, Ivern returned from town and said something like that.

“Why?”

“Beats me. I only just heard about it from the guards here. They didn’t know the details either,”

Ivern replied.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“So, what are you gonna do?”

What am I going to do, he asks.

“I’m going to refuse. I don’t have any reason to meet her.”

When I said that, Ivern gave a knowing nod for some reason.

“Yeah, that’s just like you. Got it. I’ll let the guards know.”

With that, Ivern, despite just coming back, headed back to the forest entrance to inform the guards of my refusal.

A few days later…

“Apparently, she’s insisting on meeting you no matter what.”

Ivern reported again.

“…Why is she so desperate?”

“I don’t know. She says there’s something urgent she needs to tell you. What do you want to do?”

“Ahh…”

If she’s still pushing after my initial refusal, it must be something serious.

Since I’ve already made it clear that I won’t get involved with anything concerning Weimar, I doubt it’s about that.

“…Fine, I’ll meet her once.”

I finally relented.

Maybe she has some intel on me or something related to me. Judging by how things have gone before, it wouldn’t be surprising if she’s dug something up.

I told Ivern I’d meet her, and he passed the message to the guards. Apparently, they immediately gave him a meeting date and time, which he brought back.

“How ridiculously prepared are they?”

“I thought the same. This might really be urgent.”

“Maybe,”

I muttered.

When the meeting day came, Ivern guided the princess and her entourage to my property. From the start, they all seemed nervous.

Of course, I didn’t let them into the house.

I couldn’t let them see Meyleen or, worse, find out there’s a child here. I even cast a soundproof barrier around the house.

The princess and her group were seated at a table I set up in the yard.

“Um… I apologize for taking up your time.”

The princess began hesitantly.

“You’re apologizing to a guy who spends all day holed up here? Are you mocking me?”

Her words irritated me, and my mood darkened even further.

As the atmosphere grew heavier, Ivern smacked me on the head.

The princess and her entourage gasped, their faces turning pale.

“What the hell?”

I snapped.

“Knock it off with the attitude. Her Highness is just here to talk. Don’t start snarling before she even says anything.”

“I’m not snarling.”

“Just being in a bad mood is enough to make people feel threatened. My apologies, Your Highness. Please, go ahead.”

“Th-Thank you. Um…”

Ah, I see. The princess doesn’t know Ivern’s name.

“I’m Ivern.”

He introduced himself.

“Ivern…”

The princess said, staring at him intently.

What now?

“Hey, princess, he’s a married commoner. Don’t get any ideas.”

I quipped.

Her face flushed bright red.

“Th-That’s not it! I just thought I’d seen him somewhere before!”

“Sure. Probably just a coincidence. So, what do you want?”

Tired of the small talk, I pushed her to get to the point.

After a brief cough, the princess composed herself and began.

“There are suspicious movements in Admos.”

“Admos? Are they planning revenge against Weimar?”

Admos was the kingdom that recently lost a war to Weimar, which resulted in them ceding territory and paying a hefty sum. They must be holding a grudge.

However, the princess shook her head.

“No, it doesn’t seem to be revenge against Weimar.”

“Then what is it?”

“Recently, Admos has been in contact with Lindor.”

“…Oh, great,”

I muttered.

Just hearing that name put me in a foul mood.

“As you know, Lindor is currently trying to rebuild itself after… the incident with you. Its reputation among neighboring nations is in tatters due to its actions. Why Admos would reach out to them now is unclear.”

The princess looked at me as if she had a theory but hesitated to say it aloud.

“Just say it,”

I urged.

After taking a deep breath, she continued.

“…Admos seems to have decided to support Lindor. This, despite not having finished paying their war reparations.”

“And?”

“Admos is likely trying to gain Lindor’s favor. In return, they might…”

Seeing her hesitate again, I finished her thought for her.

“They’re going to ask Lindor to perform another summoning ritual, aren’t they?”

The princess silently nodded.

The summoning magic circle that brought me here was discovered in Lindor, and it cannot be relocated. If anyone wants to summon someone from another world, they have no choice but to rely on Lindor.

“That’s the only reason they’d bother supporting Lindor at a time like this.”

The princess said.

“I see. Honestly, resorting to summoning every time things get tough… this world is full of scumbags.”

“I… I have no excuse.”

The princess said, bowing her head repeatedly.

I ignored her. No point in entertaining empty apologies.

“Still, if Admos is going so far as to support Lindor just to get a summoned person, what’s their goal?”

“I don’t think they’d use a summoned person to wage war between human nations.”

“Yeah, people would push back against that.”

They’re likely to summon someone from my world again. If that happens, the summoned person would look just like the humans here.

Honestly, if they summon someone fresh, they’d probably refuse to fight right away.

“That leaves two possibilities: either they’re planning to invade a demon nation to reclaim the territory and money they lost in the war, or…”

The princess trailed off and stared at me intently.

“They want to hunt down the previous summoned person who became an enemy of the world—me.”

When I said that, the princess’s face fell, and she lowered her gaze, looking pained.

“Originally, the war started because Admos tried to capture you using unethical means. Given that, it wouldn’t be surprising if they’re holding a grudge against you ”

She admitted.

“It’s complete nonsense.”

I said bitterly.

What did I ever do to deserve this? I was just trying to survive.

They labeled me an enemy of the world on their own, and now they blame me? The sheer audacity of it all was infuriating.

“So, why are you telling me this? Trying to curry favor?”

The princess and her entourage froze at my blunt accusation, their faces twitching nervously.

“Hey, that’s too harsh.”

Ivern cut in, reprimanding me.

“Am I wrong?”

While Ivern tried to chastise me, the princess seemed to make up her mind about something.

“…If their target is you, Lord Maya, this place could become a battlefield.”

She said, her tone serious.

“That’s possible.”

“Well, um… this area is technically within Weimar’s territory, so if summoned persons were to fight here, it could… destabilize the entire nation.”

…Ah.

“So, what you’re saying is, ‘if you’re going to fight, do it somewhere else’?”

“If possible, yes…”

I see. So that’s her real motive.

At least she was honest this time.

But.

“I refuse.”

“What!?”

When I rejected her proposal outright, the princess and her emissaries looked completely stunned.

“W-Why…”

“Why? Let me ask you something. Why are you telling me this? You should be saying it to whoever’s trying to pick a fight with me.”

I haven’t done anything. I haven’t even left this place.

And yet, they want to fight me, and somehow I’m the one expected to make concessions?

Better yet, don’t let them come here at all.

The princess gave a strained smile and nodded slightly, seeming to accept my reasoning despite her apparent discomfort.

“…That’s true. Understood. However, since there is such suspicion, please stay vigilant.”

The princess said.

“Yeah, got it.”

“Then, I shall take my leave.”

The princess stood, bowed politely, and left.

The barrier around the property was designed to confuse anyone trying to enter, but it allowed people to exit freely, so there was no need for Ivern to escort her. The princess and her entourage left on their own.

“Hey, seriously. The princess came all this way out of concern for you, and that’s the attitude you show her?”

Once the princess had disappeared beyond the barrier, Ivern spoke to me with a look of exasperation.

“Huh? Why should I care? If they don’t want this place turning into a battlefield, then they shouldn’t let anyone come here in the first place.”

“You’re not wrong, but there’s a better way to say things.”

“I don’t see why I should bow my head or show gratitude to anyone in this world.”

Hearing that, Ivern let out a deep sigh.

“What about Bennett?”

“She’s special because she’s indispensable to Meyleen,”

Ivern gave a wry smile.

“Meyleen really is your standard for everything, isn’t she?”

“Of course.”

Which is why I also hate the upper echelons of the demon nation that Meyleen despises.

If possible, I’d prefer any new summoned person to fight against the demon nation instead.

“By the way, aren’t you going to stop the summoning?”

“Why should I go out of my way for someone I don’t even know?”

“Someone you don’t know? They might be another person from your world being abducted, you know? Doesn’t that make you want to stop it?”

“Not really. If it was someone I knew from my old world, that’d be a different story. But summoning is completely random. If someone gets summoned, they just have to accept it as bad luck. Besides, there might even be people who’d be happy about it.”

“…Happy about being abducted against their will?”

“Yeah. There are probably people fed up with their lives in my old world who’d get excited and say, ‘Yes! I got isekai’d!’”

When I said this, Ivern looked completely bewildered.

“Your old world… was it a little messed up?”

“Probably.”
