Chapter 15: The Strongest Onmyouji Tires Himself Out
We spent the whole day dealing with the undead soldiers scattered throughout the town.
I stopped before I lost the crows sight, but by that time, we had reduced the number of undead soldiers to the point where they couldn’t be easily spotted by any rat’s vision.
However, it didn’t mean we completely wiped out those who attacked here.
Considering the scale of destruction, it was evident that the main force had already left the town, and only a few remained.
Just dealing with them had significantly drained both our energy and stamina.
The surviving residents had gathered in a few undamaged buildings.
Though everyone was exhausted, those with remaining strength took turns keeping watch at night, as it couldn’t be declared with certainty that there were no lingering undead soldiers.
The atmosphere resembled a makeshift camp of people displaced by war and forced to leave their homeland.
“It seems our concerns were justified”
Ren said under the lamplight, accompanied by a composed smile.
Currently, we had secured a building that used to be a town’s carriage rental.
The sun had completely set, and the coachmen and caretakers were already resting. While we wished to rest as well, there were things that needed to be discussed first.
“It seems that the enemies can turn the residents of the captured town into undead soldiers,”
At Ren’s words, everyone’s expressions darken.
The young forest-dwelling elf continues without paying any attention to our reactions.
“I’ve encountered several undead soldiers typical of adventurers. Most likely, they’re corpses taken from other towns.”
“…I suppose.”
Given the scale of the rebellion with tens of thousands, it was a concern. Just slaves and fanatics alone were already too many.
Initially, the reason for this was unclear, but when the true nature of the rebellion turned out to be undead soldiers, the method of their procurement became apparent.
Ren expresses a bit of weariness.
“And it seems the strength of the undead soldiers depends on the original human. It’s been quite a challenge.”
He sighs as if exhausted.
Despite saying that, the holy knight hasn’t sustained a single injury.
Recalling the battles, it seems that reasonably strong adventurers have become undead soldiers, probably due to being recognized by Fiona.
I interject
“Even though they’re dead, their bodies remain the same. It’s natural that more muscles mean more strength.”
What was unexpected, however, is that the corpses could use magic.
The necromancy in this world might be capable of more than I initially thought.
I continue speaking.
“More importantly… if we continue like this, the undead soldiers will keep increasing without limit.”
Destroying the town turns the corpses into soldiers. The enemy numbers are growing exponentially.
Of course, there must be limits to the wizard’s abilities, but with the numbers already swelled to this extent, it’s uncertain how much that limit matters.
“It’s something we can’t handle. It’s like trying to bail out a sinking ship with a thimble, no matter how many we defeat.”
“Um, you did inform Fiona-san about this, right…?”
When Leefa asks hesitantly, Ren, uncharacteristically, offers a friendly smile.
“Yes, without fail. On the first day, I dispatched messengers to the princess and the court. Don’t worry, big sister.”
“…This forest-dwelling elf seems oddly kind to Leefa.”
Mabel mutters quietly, and Ren returns to a composed smile.
“Those who can see spirits are all comrades. Living together as beings in a foolish human country, I feel a sense of camaraderie.”
“Um, I didn’t really mean it that way…”
Watching Leefa’s troubled expression, I ponder.
Since we’ve informed the capital, one would hope some action will be taken, but often reports are treated as if “nothing happened.” Without understanding the Emperor’s intentions, it’s hard to have high expectations.
“There’s no choice but to keep fighting,”
Ren said with a smile.
“I assumed you all understood that.”
We fall silent.
It’s true. The circumstances haven’t changed since the other day. Since we can’t return to the capital, we have no choice but to continue this uncertain battle.
“The hero over there understands as well, right?”
“…”
Even though Ren spoke, Amiyu remained silent for a while.
A brief pause lingered.
Shortly after, Amiyu lifted her face with a start.
“Huh, what’s that?”
“It’s none other than you who’s being asked to fight”
Ren said with a composed expression, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. However, whether she hadn’t been listening at all or not, Amiyu just looked puzzled.
Reluctantly, I spoke up.
“We talked about moving again and heading to the battlefield. Are you okay with that?”
“Yeah. I got it.”
Amiyu nodded obediently.
“Well, given the situation, there’s no other choice, right?”
