Chapter 11: The Strongest Onmyoji Departs the Imperial Capital

After that, we departed from the Imperial Capital as planned.

It would take several days by carriage to reach the region where the rebellion was occurring. Therefore, it had been decided that we would stay at inns in various towns along the way.

Tonight’s stay is in the town of Tenendo, situated in a canyon.

“Wow…”

Amiyu and the others cheered as they witnessed its majestic appearance from the carriage window.

Tenendo was a city perched on the edge of a sheer cliff.

Built on a high plateau, it loomed above, its height impressive. Although not visible from here, the rear was said to be an inaccessible forest with treacherous terrain. The east and west sides seemed gently sloping and easy to climb, but a deep canyon ran through, dividing the town.

Amiyu expressed her amazement.

“How could they build a town in such a place?”

“Originally, it was a settlement built by people fleeing from barbarians. As time passed, more people gathered, and now it’s one of the Empire’s largest cities.”

“How do you even get there?”

“There’s a bridge over the canyon.”

Upon my words, Amiyu and the others leaned out of the window.

There were massive bridges of the same design spanning each canyon running east and west.

“It’s said that a powerful magician built them about three hundred years ago. The fact that this city has grown so large is probably thanks to those two bridges.”

Amiyu and the others exclaimed in admiration.

“Oh, I see. Well, without those bridges, no one would gather in such a place.”

“It seems convenient with bridges on both sides. Climbing up there might be a bit challenging, though.”

“But, it feels a bit uneasy.”

Unusually, Mabel spoke with a hint of vulnerability.

“I’ve never crossed such an old bridge before.”

“…Now that you mention it.”

Can bridges created by magic be effectively repaired in case of damage? I wondered at that moment.

And then,

“Foolish humans.”

A voice echoed inside the carriage.

The voice came from the young forest-dwelling elf sitting in front of me.

“Speaking of merely three hundred years as if it were ancient. To us forest-dwelling elves, a structure that has aged that much is hardly considered rare.”

The young elf, without a hint of reading the atmosphere within the carriage, spoke with an unaffected smile.

Long ears adorned with radiant golden hair. As befitting his race, he possessed such beauty that it could be mistaken for the opposite gender, but honestly, I couldn’t feel anything but disdain.

Sixth in the order of Holy Knights, Yorgie Norn Zott Solarios Tizit Ren.

That’s how the boy introduced himself when we first met.

His name seemed unusually long for a forest-dwelling elf, but apparently, forest-dwelling elves and dark elves, known as Black Forest People, traditionally have such names, although they don’t use them in everyday life.

They only use them during events like birth, marriage, and funerals. From the way he arrogantly shared this information, I had a bad feeling, and sure enough, he turned out to be the worst kind of travel companion.

As the atmosphere inside the carriage soured, I couldn’t help but let out a sigh and say.

“…Fiona said that only the Holy Knights with bad personalities were left, but I didn’t expect it to be this bad. Is there any way we can exchange escorts even now?”

“Foolish and morally repugnant humans. If the princess had spoken ill of me, you would have blamed me without directing your anger towards yourself, wouldn’t you? Humans are always scheming. I won’t fall for that.”

“Well, it’s just the truth.”

“The princess would likely say there’s a flaw in my personality.”

“Don’t you have some self-awareness at least? Or did Fiona not say anything before we set out together?”

“I was expressly told to refrain from rude behavior. I interpreted it as an obligation to make an effort. I’m still making an effort.”

With a composed smile, the forest-dwelling elf Holy Knight asserted himself.

As I was left speechless with disbelief, Amiyu voiced her irritation.

“This guy is seriously infuriating. I’ve never seen such an arrogant brat in all my life.”

“Foolish humans. I am not a child. Forest-dwelling elves live for much longer than humans. I can’t believe you wouldn’t even know such a basic fact.”

“What are you talking about? I know that much. Forest-dwelling elves grow similarly to humans until around the age of fifteen, right? In other words, shorty, you’re still a kid.”

Without responding, Holy Knight Ren opened the window and looked outside the carriage. He murmured something about the pleasant breeze.

Even Amiyu seemed at a loss for words.
