Chapter 73: pt.8 [Henry and his adoptive father Mitchell Howler] ◆
After parting ways with Mai and returning to the dormitory, Henry was deep in thought.
He had dissuaded Mai from offering up a large amount of diamonds, but that would have been negating her feelings. If he continued to make remarks that stifled her motivation, eventually he and Mai would have a falling out someday.
(But then again, I can’t let her follow the same path as Liyol. Mai comes from a peaceful world, so she doesn’t know the horror of the powers that be in this country.)
He considered various options, but they all involve uncertainties, followed by haunting anxiety.
Ever since he started thinking about it, the face of one man has come to mind. He has golden hair and green eyes. The supreme power in the country, with a hard to read face. King Eldor VIII.
If you offer a diamond to the king, you can donate it without other people finding out where it came from. But the king, being the king, would want to know who made the donation.
Henry did not know everything about the King’s character, having only exchanged a few words with him since becoming his Head civil servant.
Deciding that there was no point in mulling over it, Henry sneaked out of the dormitory and got on Iris. Their destination was the “Hideaway.”
Mai is surprised to see Henry back.
“Mai-san, I think the best way to donate the diamonds you made to the country is to give them directly to His Majesty. What do you think?”
“If the diamonds can be of any use to you, I don’t mind. I would like that.
“But there is a possibility that His Majesty will try to take you in.”
“You mean he might lock me up and make me make diamonds and opals endlessly? I’ve been thinking about it too since then. Hehe.”
In the middle of a serious conversation, Mai bursts out laughing.
“Is His Majesty the kind of person who would mistreat me and take away his own son’s girlfriend?”
“I am not sure there. As a father, he would not do such a thing, but as a king, I cannot read too much into how he would react.”
“If that were to happen, I would run away. No matter which room in the castle I am trapped in, I can simply turn the stone walls into sand. I’ll escape through that hole. Even if I am attacked by arrows or swords, I can just create a barrier. Even if there is a magical device that seals my magical powers, when using me, that magical device has to be removed, right? The moment it is removed, I will shatter the magical device into pieces.”
(That’s right. Mai-san was the kind of person who could do that. I was so anxious that I lost my sense of intelligence.)
“If you must make an enemy of me, I can turn your castle into a pile of sand, or your sword and bow into iron sand or pieces of wood. But if it’s going to cause that much of a fight, maybe it would be better if we just kept quiet about the diamonds.”
“I’m sorry to suggest something contrary to what I said earlier, but it’s too early to jump to conclusions. My adoptive father is a friend of His Majesty’s. Could I please discuss this with him? Including about your magic?”
“Of course. You can tell him everything about me. I trust the Viscount who raised you.”
He quickly got on his horse and headed for the Howler house. Henry was a little flustered as he remembered Mai’s dignified smile.
(Right. Mai can turn the royal castle into a pile of sand. She can also nullify attacks from the surroundings with a barrier, and destroy weapons themselves. Mai is… possibly the strongest being in this country, no, in the world?)
Fortunately, his adoptive father was awake and greeted him with a happy look on his face, saying, “What’s up? It’s unusual to see you this late at night.” Looking at his smile, Henry thought to myself, (This man really loved me and raised me.)
“I wanted to go over something with you, father. Did you know that diamonds are used in the Magic Department’s teleportation device?”
“I know. I’ve heard that it amplifies magical power without distortion and helps move matter.”
“What about those diamonds disappearing?”
“I know that too. I heard the head of the Magic Department accidentally used it. What’s the problem?”
If he spoke up here, there would be no backing down. But Henry’s intuition tells him, “If she continues to hide her abilities, there will be no happy future for her.” His intuition has never been wrong before.
“There is someone who wants to donate diamonds to the country. I would like to ask you, father, to do this for me, as it would be impossible for me to do so in my position as a civil servant. Can you donate them to the country without revealing the person’s identity?”
“I don’t mind that, but how many diamonds do you have?”
“Roughly speaking, it’s about five or six teacups.”
“What…”
Mitchell Howler couldn’t comprehend the amount Henry showed with both his hands, as it was too large to comprehend.
“Henry, I won’t say a word. Who is it? A nobleman, I presume? What have you offered him in exchange for the diamonds?”
“Nothing. The person… has no interest in power in this country whatsoever.”
“Who is it?”
There was no greed in his adoptive father eyes. There was only pure parental love and concern. Henry spoke with the resolve of someone stepping off a cliff.
“It’s Mai-san.”
Henry’s adoptive father said “Mai-san?” and then nothing more.
From there, Henry told him everything about Mai. Mitchell asked him questions in between, which he answered honestly.
After hearing everything, Mitchell Howler went limp and looked at the ceiling. Then, while still staring at the ceiling, he talks to Henry. His adoptive father’s voice is quieter than usual.
“I thought Mai was a good and precious woman who accepted and loved you. But my goodness, she turned out to be actually an extraordinary being.”
“I also just a few moments ago thought she might be the most powerful person in the world.”
“The strongest in the world. That’s for sure. Hahaha, Henry, if you marry her, I don’t think you’ll ever get bored.”
“Yeah.”
Then Mitchell straightened up.
“Leave it to me. His Majesty is not the kind of person who would lock Mai away and make her make jewelry. But I’m not so sure about the people around him. I’ll act as a middleman and make sure that Mai-san’s affairs do not come to light. What many nobles don’t know is that His Majesty and I are good friends, so give me some time.”
“thank you so much”
“this is the first time you’ve ever asked me for a favor, isn’t it? I’m glad.”
