Chapter 66: Beastmen vs. Beastmen

I can hear Victor giving instructions to his companions from the pendant around my neck.

“Never let them go beyond the fence! Batias, go around from the right! Oddie, left! Claude! One got away!”

Even though I was having the dreamlike experience of riding on the back of a cat, I was listening to Victor’s instructions coming from the pendant (Cool! Cool! Waaa, so cool!) while I listen, my eyes follow the team play of the dog-type beastmen

It is a pitch-dark district with no houses. Thanks to the sensing magic left unleashed, the movements of the beastmen look like a game screen.

The orange light climbs to high places and runs up and down the road in an undulating motion. Many blue lights are chasing them down. The blue lights are working together like living creatures with a single will, gradually driving the orange color into a corner. It is like a flock of sheep and a sheepdog.

Henry-san stopped at a place away from them and let me off. He didn’t join in the chase, perhaps because he wanted to focus on guarding me, or perhaps because he didn’t want to interfere with the dog-type beastmen’s teamwork.

Soon, all the orange color gathered on the roof of the two-story building. So that means Albert too.  I wondered what he was doing for a moment, but then I thought, “No, this is fine.” Considering what was to come, it would be better to be chased with his friends and not have them think he was “completely on the side of the security forces.”

“Mai-san, could you use transformation magic to create something that would make the young people want to get off the roof without a second thought?”

“I can do it. I’m on it.”

What should I put out to scare them? Maybe “The Walking Dead”?

Before I was hospitalized, I had watched up to season eleven many times, so I was confident that I could recreate it perfectly. Since I can’t create a moving object with transformation magic, I’ll use message magic to create a zombie that looked as realistic as possible.

I didn’t think that my experience of creating multiple rabbits at the same time while practicing message magic would come in handy here. I concentrated my magic with all my might and imagined a rotting, crumbling walking corpse. I made it appear on the other side of the roof, behind the monkey-type beastman.

It was getting fun, so I added a few more. I brought out eight corpses, some crawling, some limping, some walking. (It would be better if they had voices too, right?) I sent out a voice as low as I could, “Uoooooogaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,” and all the orange lights stopped moving at once. Then all the young people turned around in a flash.

What do you think? Isn’t it really scary? Hehehe.

“Aaaaah!”

“ monster!

“eeeeeep!”

“Mommy!”

The voice that cried “Mommy” at the end was Albert’s.

Eight orange lights leapt downward one after the other. Just as we expected from the agile monkey-type beastmen. No one seemed to be injured, and as they tried to escape, they were surrounded by blue lights. Their mission was complete, so I erased the “zombies.”

“Grrrrrr!” came the growl of a dog. “Don’t run away!” a voice yelled. “Ahh! Ouch!” came the voice of a young monkey-type beastman, who seemed to have been bitten somewhere.

“Hey! If you run away, I’ll bite your neck next time.”

The shepherd-like beastman spoke, and the youngsters suddenly stopped moving. About twenty giant dogs surrounded the eight ape-like beastmen.  Victor-san, who had somehow reverted to human form and was now wearing his uniform, stood in front of the youths.

“I’m taking all of you to the guard station.”

“Wait! I’m going to turn back into a human again. Just give me something to wear.”

“You took them off yourselves.”

“You can’t let us be seen like this!”

The youngsters are crying and being scolded by a giant dog.

Just as I was wondering where Henry was, he appeared from the darkness in his Civil Servant clothes, glowing a pale red. Victor calls out to Henry.

“I hope you don’t mind if I take care of these guys. They’ve been causing trouble here and there, so I want to investigate them all.”

“I’ll leave that to you. Can you please tell me what kind of conditions these boys were working under? I’ll use that information to thoroughly investigate the Ridrick Company. There seems to be a lot of things going against the kingdom’s laws.”

“What?”

It was Sandor, the leader of the youths, who sounded surprised. Mr. Henry answers him expressionlessly.

“You were arrested because you vandalized someone’s house and attempted arson. Ridrick broke the law, so he will be tried. Both of you deserve to be punished. You will all be treated equally as citizens of this country. It doesn’t matter if you’re human or beastkin.”

All the young people look at each other flabbergasted.

All The dog-type beastmen took turns disappearing and coming back dressed. About half of the dog-type beastmen were in guard uniforms. The rest were dressed in a variety of different clothes, but all of them had sturdy builds. I guess he’s gathered a group of people suited for this kind of thing.

Victor approached me and spoke to me in a whisper while touching the pendant.

“What about this thing I borrowed?”

“Please keep it. You may need it again.”

“I understand. When you have time, please tell me more about it.”

“Yes.”

Then the voice of Sandor, the youth leader, is heard.

“What about that monster from earlier? It’s not chasing us anymore, is it?”

“monster? What are you talking about?”

The walking corpse was on the other side of the ridge of the roof, so it couldn’t be seen by the dog-type beastman that was down below.

“A bunch of rotting corpses just now showed up! Didn’t you guys see them?”

“I didn’t see them. What’s that?”

Victor looks at me as he says that. I give him a small nod and he seems to have guessed.

“You must have been hallucinating because you were cornered. Just hurry up and get to the guard  station. I’ll let you collect your clothes at the dyehouse.”

Victor turned to me and Henry.

“Then we will take these guys with us.”

“Thank you for your hard work. My girlfriend and I will be heading home soon. Please Leave the Ridrick matter to me. Once you have gathered information from the young men about Ridrick’s transgressions, I would like you to deliver it to the castle. You can call me by saying you’re looking for Head Civil Servant  Henry Howler.”

“Yes, sir.”

Victor’s eyes widened for a moment when he heard the words “Head civil servant,” but he quickly regained his composure.

“Now if you’ll excuse us. Thank you for your hard work,” Mr. Henry said, taking my hand and starting to walk away.

“Victor and the others were amazing. There was no need for me to participate at all.”

“They were able to communicate with each other with just a few instructions. And even those who were not part of the security force were working together seamlessly. That’s just what you’d expect from a dog-type beastman, right? It was really cool…”

The way the big guys, or rather dogs, ran around, the sound of their footsteps, their growling. Everything was cool.

I couldn’t tell which dog was which, but I wonder  who the shepherd-like dog was. I remember he was in charge of the outermost part of the group, chasing back all the young men who were trying to escape without letting any of them go. He was running around furiously. His cardiopulmonary function was amazing.

“Mai-san. No, you can’t do that, okay?”

“Hmm? What is it?”

“Ever since you were on my back, you’ve had a crush on the dog-type beastman.”

“No, no, I just thought it was cool.”

The truth is, I had a little crush, but it was the same kind of crush you have when you fall in love with an athlete. …… I was struggling to explain it well when Henry lifted his hand that was holding mine, cupped it and gently bit my wrist.

“They were cool, sure, but don’t look the other way.”

“I wasn’t looking away. I’m just saying they were cool in the same way that I say a flower is beautiful.”

“Well then, let’s leave it at that. So, what did you put up on the other side of the roof? Sandor said it was a monster. I want to see it too.”

“That’s… I don’t know. It’s not a pleasant thing to look at.”

“I want to see it.”

 Spoken like a spoiled child.

“Hehe. I get it. Don’t be surprised when you see it.”

“Yes, please.”

I stopped and raised the flame of a fire spell in my right hand. If it was too bright it would be a turn-off, so I made it a small, dim flame. Then about three meters away,  I brought out a swarm of “zombies”. Decaying, crumbling flesh, the corpses slowly crawling towards us. It was truly nostalgic. I know I’m the one who created it, but it was a satisfying performance.

Mr. Henry freaked out, so I stopped the movement of the corpses.

Mr. Henry, who was watching silently, began to sweat on his hands. Was it too realistic?

“Have you ever seen that before, Mai?”

“Yes, I have. But walking corpses don’t really exist. They were fake.”

“Phew. Thank goodness. I wondered what kind of horrible world you was living in.”

“They just use makeup and acting to make themselves look like that. It’s just a play. This world is far more amazing. Mr. Henry, why don’t you drop by my place? We could have tea.”

“Yes, please.”

I erased the walking corpse and started walking again.

“Oh right, can I bite your wrist now.”

“Absolutely not.”

“But you bit me twice.”

“No. I’d lose my senses.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Mr. Henry walked forward looking blankly at me. A little while later I heard a small voice say, “It’s not a laughing matter.”
