Chapter 101: Lady Constance’s Lecture

Mr. Kyrias came to the store at noon.

It has been a few days since he last came to buy take-out lunch. Today, he is alone again, without his friends. He is so listless that I wonder if he is a different person.

“Hello, Mai-san. I’ll have the daily special, please.”

“Welcome. The daily special, yes, of course.”

Even if the person looks unwell or out of sorts, you don’t say anything like, ‘You look so unwell that I can tell just by looking at you.’ This is an ironclad rule of customer service that I learned from my grandmother on my first day at work.

She told me, “Sometimes people come to the store because they are not feeling well. Our role is not to point out that they don’t look well. Our role is to cheer them up with good food and drinks.”

Kyrias is depressed, but he finishes his “spicy seafood noodles”, drank his tea, and sat in a daze. There were no other customers. It seems that people still don’t eat out for fear of getting sick.

Kyrias-kun sat for a while in a daze, and then asked, “Mai-san, may I have a word with you?”

“Yes, what is it?”

“His Majesty the King gave the magic department some diamonds. There was about a heap of them in a soup plate. It was you, wasn’t it?”

I couldn’t think of anything to say, so I fell silent, and it seemed Kyrias came to a conclusion on his own.

“It really was you. If His Majesty had that many diamonds, he would have given them to me when my master came back. I figured he must have gotten his hands on them recently. I thought, “Where did it come from?’ and immediately thought of you.”

“I don’t want to lie, so I’ll admit it. I’m an outsider, so I apologize if I offended you by offering you the diamonds.”

 Kyrias-kun shook his head.

“I’m embarrassed. Really talented people are humble.”

What should I say in a situation like this? I’m sure that even if I offer some superficial words of consolation, he’s smart enough to see through it. It would be better not to say anything at all than to say something unnecessary.

“Do you have a little more time? I’ve made a new dessert and I’d be happy if you could taste it.”

“I’ll try it.”

The way he answered so quickly made him look like he was still 17 years old. In Japan, he would be a high school student. A troublesome time in life when you’re cocky and have too much energy. Considering this, Kyrias, the youngest of the group, is working very hard to lead the older wizards and get the job done.

Cheer up. You’re doing great. I served him milk pudding with that thought in mind.

“It’s made from milk, cream, and sugar.”

“oh, yes?”

After taking a bite, Kyrias smiled and said, “It’s delicious.”

“It melted in my mouth. And has a gentle taste. I want Patricia to have some too. Can I take it home? “

“It tastes better cold.”

“Okay. I’ll bring it with me while chilling it with some wind magic. She can’t go out freely. Can you sell me as much as you have today?”

“You got it.”

The gelatin was made from pigskin and bones using transformation magic. I was delighted when the pure white powdered gelatin I knew appeared on the plate. Now I can make tea jelly, coffee jelly, strawberry milk pudding, and orange milk pudding.

After finishing the milk pudding, Kyrias-kun said, “I feel better now.”

“I am most happy to hear you say so.”

“So, once we’ve confirmed that the magical tool is working properly, you should definitely try it out yourself, Mai. As the donor of the diamonds, you have that right.”

Me? Right. You don’t mind if I use it?

“It’s still a long way off, though. Thanks to Master’s failure, it’s been proven that we can send humans, but we’re still experimenting to see if people other than Master can travel in the same way.”

“I hope it will be up and running soon. I will think for a while whether I will use that magic tool or not.”

“I understand. I won’t tell anyone about you providing us with the diamonds. It would be dangerous if bad people gathered here in search of diamonds. Besides, if something were to happen to you, it would be us who received the diamonds who would be in trouble.”

kyrias explained that from now on, all the members of the Magic department will learn how to accurately draw the magic circle that activates the magic tools and how to pour magic power into it. Since failure can be life-threatening, they will take their time.

It’ll be a while before Henry can travel to the beastman Kingdom easily.

“The milk pudding was delicious. I will come back again.”

kyrias-kun left with a box of ten milk puddings in his hands, feeling a little better than when he arrived. I am glad that my magic and cooking can cheer someone up.

Lady Constance is giving a lecture tonight. Henry will also be there. There is a reason for this.

“I can handle Lady Constance’s lectures on my own.”

“No, I’ll be there too.”

“Aren’t you being overprotective?”

“Not at all.”

After a brief exchange of “No, I’m not overprotective,” we went to the lecture together in the evening. Lady Constance said with a bitter smile, “Henry already knows this.” Lady Constance gave the lecture without even looking at the materials, fluently listing off the family names. I listened while taking notes.

“In this country, aristocratic society is built with the royal family at the top, but in reality there are royalist, neutral, and anti-royalist factions. This must never be mentioned in public. That is the first and foremost principle. The Viscount Howler family have been royalists for generations.”

I see. Don’t talk about factions, I made a note not to do so.

“Before the current royal family, the royal family changed hands every two or three generations. The Howlers have been known as loyal subjects since the time of the first King Eldor. His present Majesty is undoubtedly a great monarch, which is a great joy for the Howler family.”

From there, I was taught the names of neutral and anti-Royalist families. As I wrote down the names, I was dizzy with thoughts like (once I memorized all these family names, the next step was to match the names with the faces of the people in the family? Not only the heads of the families, but also their wives and children’s faces) I wondered.

Kyrias-kun’s family, the Marquis Halford, were neutralists. If I remember correctly, Mr. Glidden had said that his brother was a military officer.

I was thinking, “Wow, they give an important position in the military to the eldest son of a family that isn’t a supporter of the royal family,” when lady Constance began to explain the situation to me.

“The fact that the current monarch does not occupy key positions with only royalists is what makes him a great ruler. He said, ‘For the development of the country, positions should not be assigned based on status or family background, but rather on ability.’ That is why Henry, although he is from a Viscount family, became the head civil servant on the basis of his abilities.

Lady Constance looks proud, but Henry has a completely blank look on his face.

Then there was talk of the connection between the wives of the head of the households, tea parties, and soirees. Then Mr. Henry interrupted.

“Mai, you are not only marrying into a Viscount’s family, you are also entering into a Baron title that I have, so you don’t have to attend tea parties or evening parties if you don’t want to. I will allow it.”*

“Really? Won’t the Howlers be criticized if I don’t participate at all?”

“Let those who criticize be. I don’t care.”

 Henry said, but

Lady Constance makes a “grrr” look on her face. Also, There are indications that the “I” designation is not welcome at his parents’ home.*¹

“Henry, let’s hear what Mai has to say first.”

“I think I could go out about once a …… month or so.”

This time, Henry has a “grumbling” look on his face, but he’ll try participating at least once anyway. If you feel it’s not for you, you don’t have to go.

After the lecture, the two of us returned to the “hideaway.” While Henry and I were enjoying an evening drink, there was a knock at the door. Henry said, “I’ll get it,” and he answered the door.

The visitors were Karin and Victor.

“I’m sorry for coming so late. It’s just that it’s the only time me and Victor could come. Here, take this. It’s a thank you for saving my life.”

She handed me something soft and wrapped in a cloth. I asked them to come inside the store and opened the package to find a long, white, thin cloth dress.

“It’s lovely! Thank you, Karin-san. I’m so happy.”

“Thank you too. Thanks to the potion, my broken bones and bruises healed in no time at all.”

“That’s good. When are you supposed to wear this?”

I asked, wondering if there was some rule I was unaware of, but as I said this, Karin-san glanced at Henry. I guessed it from that look alone. Yes, I did.. So it’s a nightwear?

“Oh, yes. I got it. Thank you very much. I will take good care of it.”

“Well, we’ll leave you to it. I’m sorry for interrupting your time together. Good night.”

With that, Karin-san and her husband left.

Henry looked away from the gift in the quiet store. Is it very embarrassing for men in this world to look directly at a woman’s nightwear?

I quickly rewrapped it and said with a laugh, “I appreciate it, but it’ll be a while before I wear this,” and Henry turned bright red.

Apparently I said something I shouldn’t have said.
