Chapter 178: “Creating an Item That (Also) Translates”

“Thor-sama, Thor-sama.”

“What is it, Mabel?”

“May I be the one to gather the materials from the ‘Forest of Confusion’?”

It happened when we were about to begin our work at the house prepared by the elf elder—

Mabel suddenly said that.

“Does that mean you’ll be the one to collect the ‘telepathic materials’?”

“Yes. I think it’ll be after the ‘Woof-Meow Friendly Talk Pendant’ is complete… But if I handle the material gathering, Thor-sama, you can return to the castle before the ‘mysterious item’ activates, right?”

She was right.

The countdown on the ‘mysterious item’—which resembled a smartphone—was just under eight days.

If we started investigating the forest now, we might not make it back to the castle in time.

Of course, there were ways to force information out of the ‘mysterious item’ using skills.

But if I failed, I might break it.

And if that happened, we’d lose the information.

If that item contains data about the hero’s world or the ‘Hard Creatures,’ losing it would be catastrophic.

That’s why I shouldn’t mess with it yet—I should wait for it to activate naturally.

Preferably in front of Rukie or Kelve-san.

Given all that… Mabel offering to go into the Forest of Confusion was a godsend.

“I’m an elf. I’m used to forests. I may be able to navigate it smoothly. And… I want to be of help to you, Thor-sama.”

She looked resolute.

If Mabel had thought it through this much, I could trust her with it.

“Can you promise me you’ll come back if it gets dangerous?”

“Y-Yes. I promise.”

Mabel nodded firmly.

“Alright. I’ll leave the material gathering to you, Mabel.”

“Thank you so much!”

“But only after you talk to your ‘ancestor’ and confirm it’s safe to go through the Forest of Confusion. If it seems dangerous, we’ll cancel the expedition.”

We already had a sample of the ‘telepathic material.’

With that, we could begin experiments to make weapons from the hero’s world.

We could gather more material after returning to the castle and making proper preparations.

It’s not like we have to rush—those materials aren’t going anywhere.

They’re located in a part of the Forest of Confusion that no one can reach.

“For now, let’s hear the full story from your ‘ancestor.'”

“I’m glad to hear that.”

Mabel gave a radiant smile.

“I can’t afford to miss this chance to be of use to you, Thor-sama.”

“Thank you, Mabel.”

When I said that, Mabel closed her eyes happily.

Then, on impulse, I reached out and patted her head.

I savored the feel of her silky silver hair.

“Alright then, let’s begin the alchemy.”

“Yes, Thor-sama.”

I began crafting the ‘Woof-Meow Friendly Talk Pendant.’

“As for the attributes I’ll use for translation… I’ll definitely need wind.”

Sound travels through the air.

To decode it, the wind attribute is essential.

Next, I needed components that could absorb magical power.

We had already confirmed through the ‘hug pillow’ that magical power contains personal information.

In the hero’s world, the ‘hug pillow’ uses magical energy to express a person’s shape, movements, and vitality.

Similarly, this time I would express the person through their words.

Also… I should probably add the ‘light attribute.’

If I use light-based magic, the pendant could display the translated text visually.

That’s how it seems to work in the version of the ‘Woof-Meow Friendly Talk Pendant’ from the catalog.

That version even shows paw-print-like marks behind the text… but I’ll leave that part out.

Displaying unknown symbols or crests could accidentally trigger magic.

This is the hero’s world we’re dealing with. It’s best to avoid unnecessary risks.

…Alright.

I’m starting to understand how to make it.

This just might work.

“The only problem is the phrase ‘Magical☆Brave Breeder Third Series’ and the ‘transformation scene music’… These are still mysteries.”

“Yes, indeed…”

‘Magical☆Brave Breeder’ must be a beastmaster from the hero’s world.

‘Third series’… that must mean it’s hereditary.

In that case, this ‘Woof-Meow Friendly Talk Pendant’ is from the third generation.

It’s been refined and improved over time.

If that’s the case, then the ‘transformation scene’ must also have some meaning.

But who is transforming?

The user? Or the ‘ancestor’ whose words are being translated?

And what kind of transformation?

“This is pretty tricky…”

“Um, Thor-sama…”

As if noticing something, Mabel spoke up:

“Could it be that the user transforms into an animal-like form?”

“Into an animal-like form?”

“Yes. I feel like this item contains the idea that one should stand in the other’s shoes when communicating. That may be what they mean by ‘transformation.'”

“Then what about the music?”

…Wait a minute.

If you’re transforming into an animal, then the need for music makes sense too.

“Maybe it’s because some people are embarrassed to transform into animals, so the music helps get them in the mood?”

“That’s entirely possible…”

“I see. So it’s about becoming a form closer to the other party to truly connect. That transformation is the key.”

That explanation made sense.

Just translating words alone doesn’t mean you’ve truly connected.

By taking on a similar form to the other, you can understand each other more deeply.

That must be the secret of the ‘Woof-Meow Friendly Talk Pendant.’

“As expected of you, Mabel. That’s a very convincing theory.”

“I-I’m not completely sure, though…”

“No, I think you’re spot on. This pendant is meant for communication. Finding a way to deepen that bond is exactly the right approach.”

—With that, the final form of the pendant was beginning to take shape.

Music… unfortunately, I don’t have any sense for that sort of thing.

Let’s leave that as an optional addition for when we return to the Demon Lord’s Castle.

If music is meant to enhance one’s mood, then it probably isn’t necessary for someone who’s already steeled themselves to transform.

Let’s try it without music first.

Now then, let’s prepare the materials and magic stones…

“Alright, let’s begin, Mabel.”

“Yes, Thor-sama!”

And so, we began the alchemy process.

We had prepared a lump of metal, a wind magic stone, and a light magic stone.

An empty magic stone was also necessary to absorb magical energy.

To strengthen the connection with our “ancestor,” we should also prepare a wolf-type “Pretend Pajamas.”

With this, we can have two stages of transformation: one where the beast ears and tail are out, and one with the hood pulled down, turning into a full wolf form. In other words, a two-step transformation is possible. The accuracy of the translation can also be adjusted in two stages.

Next… let’s also create an option to form a magical connection.

This one can be worn by the “ancestor.”

If it’s set up to pair with the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant,” a magical bond will form between the wearers. That will likely increase both the accuracy and speed of translation.

Lastly, I visualize the shape of the pendant.

“Alright. Let’s do this! ‘Creation Alchemy’!”

I activated my skill and began crafting the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant.”

And the completed item was──

────────────────────

“Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant”
(Rarity: ★★★★★★★★★★☆)
(Attributes: Wind・Light・Water)

  • The strong wind attribute precisely detects voices (air vibrations).
  • The light attribute senses the presence and will of the speaker.
  • The water attribute converts that into a “flow” of words.

A magical item used in the Hero World’s Magical☆Brave Breeder (Season 3).
The pendant captures the voice of the target and translates it.
The translated text is displayed in the center of the pendant.

As an option, a “Magical Link Bracelet” is available.

When worn by a target creature, and the user takes on a similar form, a “magical link” is formed. The user and the creature become deeply connected through magical energy.

A transformed user can hear the translated words as actual “voice.”
Also, translation accuracy is improved.

Due to the magical link, the wearer can use abilities of the target creature.
The more closely one resembles the target, the stronger the link becomes.

Physical Destruction Resistance: ★★★★★★
Support for non-human/non-demi-human/non-demon species is conducted via the translation function.

────────────────────

“It’s done…”

“It really is.”

And with that, it was complete.

For some reason, a function to copy the target’s abilities got added, but… well, it can’t be helped. That’s probably just a natural result of the “magical link.”

To understand the other’s words, one becomes closer to their existence—that must be the idea.

We’ll figure out the specifics by trying it out.

“Alright then, before we speak with our ‘ancestor,’ let’s run a little test.”

I opened the house window.

We had been hearing a cat meowing for a while now.

Looking outside… yep. There it is. A small cat.

Seems even the elf village keeps cats.

I hope we can talk to it.

First, I pour magical energy into the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant.”

Since this is just a test, we don’t need to use the “magical link.”

“Hello. Would you mind talking with me?”

“Meow~”

It responded.

The words displayed on the pendant were…

“Human. In village. Rare.”

“Yep. It’s translating.”

Although, it’s not a full conversation yet.

Normal animals don’t understand our language.

Also, this cat seems wary of humans. It’s shrinking away in fear.

So, to talk more intimately…

“Mabel. Could you try speaking to it?”

I handed the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant” to Mabel.

She put on the pendant and then said,

“Hello. Where are you from, kitty?”

“Meow, meow~”

The cat approached Mabel.

As expected, it seems friendly toward elves.

It meowed gently. And what did it say…

“You. Before entering village. Were organizing luggage.”

““Ohhh!””

It’s true—we were sorting our luggage just before arriving at the elf village.

We were putting away blankets and pajamas.

So this cat saw that.

“It pointed out exactly what we were doing. That means it understood us, right?”

“A-Amazing! I’ll try asking more!”

Mabel crouched down and brought her face close to the cat.

“Did you notice anything else?”

“Meow meow meow~”

It answered.

The translation said…

“Blue blanket. Elf. You. Were hugging it.” …?

Blue blanket…?

That’s the one I used during our travels.

And the elf… meaning Mabel… was hugging it?

“Meow meow~”

“Um… ‘Elf. Blue blanket. Wrapped in it. Looked happy. Rubbed cheek against it.’”

“W-W-W-Wha—!”

“Meow meow meow meow meow—!”

Mabel suddenly cried out in panic.

The startled cat ran off toward the forest.

…Uhh.

“………………U-Urgh.”

Before I realized it, Mabel had turned her back to me.

Her beautiful elf ears and nape were bright red.

Her slender shoulders were trembling slightly.

…Maybe I should leave her alone.

But, this is an experiment for a magical item, after all—

“Do you think what the cat said was true?”

“……Urgh.”

“This is for testing purposes. I need an accurate report.”

“…………Yes… It’s… true…”

Still covering her face with both hands, Mabel turned toward me and… nodded.

Just like the cat said, she apparently had been playing with my blanket.

The translation function of the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant” was perfect.

“…I’m sorry, Thor-sama.”

“…It’s fine. I mean, it’s just playing with a blanket.”

“N-No, I wasn’t playing…”

“Really?”

“Yes. I… wanted to gather the courage to enter the village, and I thought maybe… I could feel your warmth, Thor-sama…”

“Is that so…”

“…Yes.”

“…………Did it give you courage?”

“It did.”

“…………Then I guess I can’t blame you.”

“…………Yesh.”

What is this… atmosphere?

Mabel had her face covered with both hands.

But she was peeking through the gaps between her fingers, looking this way.

Her gaze was so embarrassing, I turned away.

Somehow, my face was starting to feel hot.

All we did was test the translation function—how did it end up like this?

Its effect is terrifying.

As expected of a magical item from the Hero’s World…

“Woof woof. Wooof!”

As I was thinking that, I heard a voice from outside the house.

It was the voice of “Our Ancestor.”

The “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant” displayed text. Let’s see…

“Are you done yet?”

“Let’s go, Mabel. We need to run another test with ‘Our Ancestor.’”

“Y-yes, Thor-sama.”

“Then Mabel, wear this.”

I handed her the wolf-type “Dress-Up Pajamas.”

By embedding the same magic stone as the “Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant,” it was magically tuned to sync. Wearing it should allow for more accurate understanding of “Our Ancestor’s” speech.

“I-I understand. Please wait a moment.”

And so, with Mabel now dressed in the wolf-type “Dress-Up Pajamas”—

We headed toward “Our Ancestor.”

“Woof woof woof.”

“It appears the preparations are complete, Alchemist.”

Outside the house, “Our Ancestor” and Erte-san were waiting.

“Oh my, Mabel-sama is wearing the ‘Dress-Up Pajamas,’ I see. This is…?”

“Cute, right?”

“Y-yes. It is cute.”

As expected of Erte-san. She has good taste.

“This is necessary in order to understand ‘Our Ancestor’s’ speech.”

I began explaining.

“This ‘Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant’ can translate more accurately when mimicking the form of the creature being communicated with. This time, we’re listening to ‘Our Ancestor’—a golden wolf.”

“So that’s why you had Mabel-sama wear pajamas with animal ears and a tail…”

“Exactly.”

“I don’t quite understand, but if the Alchemist says it’s necessary…”

Erte-san kept glancing at Mabel.

She looked… a little envious, maybe…?

“Do you also want to try on animal ears and a tail, Erte-san?”

“N-no! Not at all…”

“Really?”

“I have no desire to transform! Well… I did use the ‘Partial Concealment Hairpiece’ before to disguise myself as a human. Becoming someone else is… fun, I suppose…”

Now that she mentioned it, when she used the “Partial Concealment Hairpiece,” Erte-san seemed to be having fun.

Her usually serious face had a smile at the corners of her mouth.

“Shall I make one for you too, Erte-san?”

“…Please stop tempting me.”

“There’s the wolf-type, or the lizard-type which Chancellor Kelve once wore—would you prefer either?”

“B-both—wait! I said stop tempting me!”

She scolded me.

Oh well. I’ll make one when I have the time and deliver it to her workplace.

For now, we need to listen to what “Our Ancestor” has to say.

“Sorry for the wait, ‘Our Ancestor.’ The translation setup is complete.”

“P-please take care of us.”

Mabel and I turned to face “Our Ancestor.”

The golden wolf known as “Our Ancestor” stared at us with beautiful eyes.

“To have a proper conversation, may I attach a bracelet to your paw?”

“Woof.”

With that, “Our Ancestor” held out a front paw.

Even without translation, I understood—go ahead, it meant.

Alright then, I’ll attach the “Magical Power Link Option” to the fluffy front leg…

“Let me ask again. Do you know the way out of the ‘Forest of Confusion,’ ‘Our Ancestor’?”

“Woof!”

“Our Ancestor” nodded.

The pendant picked up the voice—

“Woof! Bark bark. Woof woof woof woof. Woof.”

“You’re too fast! A little slower, please…”

“Woooof! Woooooof!”

“Our Ancestor” continued speaking rapidly.

Though the pendant displayed the words, they were replaced almost instantly with the next.

I couldn’t keep up with reading them.

“She says, ‘Yes, I know. That forest has many traps and is designed to keep out the greedy and dangerous. Ah, thank you for asking! I’ve been dying to talk about it!’”

Mabel told me, her animal ears twitching.

“‘Our Ancestor’s’ words are being conveyed through the animal ears. It’s a gentle woman’s voice. She seems absolutely delighted to be able to talk with us.”

“I see…”

Now I understood the purpose of the “transformation scene.”

If the speaker talks too quickly, it’s hard to follow the pendant’s text display alone.

That’s why we needed to hear the translated words with our ears.

To do that, we had to take on a similar form and strengthen the “magic link.”

Wait a second…?

If that’s the case, maybe I can talk to the Hard Creatures using this method too. I still have the Beast Garagarossa Cosplay Pajamas I made the other day.

If I’m lucky, I might even figure out their true identity and purpose.

As expected of an item from the Hero World—it’s really deep.

“Please tell me, Ancestor. About the traps in the Forest of Confusion, and how to get past them. Also—”

After thinking for a moment, I added,

“If you know, I’d also like to know what the material deep in the forest actually is…”

There was one more thing I wanted to ask.

The Ancestor, upon hearing my words, nodded clearly and—

“Waaoooon. Waun.”

“She says, ‘I’ll tell you about the traps and how to get past them.’ Also…”

Mabel’s eyes widened in disbelief at what she heard.

“…She says the material deep in the forest is the bones of an ancient dragon that once existed.”

That’s what we were told.

“…The bones of an ancient dragon?”

“So there’s a dragon’s corpse deep in the forest?”

“When I analyzed the psychic resonance material, it came up as ‘the bones of ███’, after all. So it really was a dragon’s bone… Wait, what’s wrong, Mabel? You look puzzled.”

“Y-Yes.”

Mabel fidgeted, holding down the hem of her cosplay pajamas.

Her expression became even more puzzled.

“Since earlier… I feel like my sense of smell has become unusually sharp.”

“Your sense of smell?”

“Yes. Also, my hearing has improved. And… for some reason, I feel restless… like I could just keep running forever…”

“Really?”

“Is this because I’m magically linked with Ancestor? If this is actually Ancestor’s physical ability or stamina… and I’m borrowing that, then this Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant might not be a translation item at all—it might be more like a transformation item…”

“It’s not a translation item!?”

Suddenly, Erte-san raised her voice.

“What do you mean by magical link? If Mabel-sama transformed her appearance with the cosplay pajamas and gained physical ability close to Ancestor’s—in other words, that of a wild animal—then yes, it’s definitely a transformation item. And a terrifyingly powerful one…”

“No, no, this is a translation item, okay?”

“I-Is that so?”

“It is.”

“B-But what if she added the Health Boost Pendant to it!? It would add immense power to Ancestor’s physical abilities. Wouldn’t that make it a transformation and body-enhancement item…?”

“She’s not wearing the Health Boost Pendant. So it’s a translation item.”

“B-But still…”

“I made it, so I’m telling you—it’s a translation item.”

“If it changes her appearance and gives her abilities, then it’s a transformation…”

“The transformation is because of the pajamas. The pendant itself is a translation item.”

“…Ugh.”

“A translation item.”

“…Understood.”

Erte-san nodded and stared intently at me.

“…We’ll be having a more detailed talk about this later, Alchemist-sama.”

“Okay.”

I nodded.

Erte-san didn’t look entirely convinced, but oh well. It couldn’t be helped.

After all, in the Hero World’s Magical☆Brave Breeder, transformations are a thing.

If they bother to transform, it obviously means their abilities change too. They probably gain amazing physical prowess and combat skills.

And this item is a replica of the original Woof-Meow Friendship Talk Pendant. If I’m using that, then it’s only natural that some wild physical abilities come with it.

“Sorry to interrupt the conversation, Ancestor.”

Once again, I faced the Ancestor.

“Please tell me how to get through the Forest of Confusion… and why the dragon bones are deep in the forest… and if it’s okay to harvest them.”

“Wau-wau.”

And so, the golden wolf Ancestor began to speak again.
