Chapter 69: Fifth-Rank Explorer ⑨
The four main dungeons near Hydrangea,
and the smaller dungeons scattered around the area…
Explorers often bring up debates about the so-called “trash” items—leftover gear and remains of the fallen.
Those usually end up on the 1st floor of the city dungeon.
So technically, there shouldn’t be trash dumps in other dungeons…
“But I don’t know all the details. It seems not all the trash ends up in the city dungeon. Some of it—like, stuff that gets overlooked or for some reason doesn’t make it to the city—it gathers in these kinds of hidden trash dumps.”
Bid-san explained.
“This is my first time hearing about it.”
Overlooked trash, huh? So it’s likely from places hard to retrieve from.
I bet there are other dumps like this in other dungeons too.
“I actually found this one by chance. At first I thought I’d found a treasure…”
“And it turned out to be this trash heap?”
“I still tried searching it for valuables though. Took a few things that looked promising to Arifa,
but they only fetched enough for a bit of pocket money.”
I smiled wryly.
Even that kind of pocket money was enough to live on day to day, really.
“So you want me to look for something valuable?”
“I’m counting on you.”
“Understood.”
I activated the relic, [Wheel of Fortune].
But everything in this room was wet, rusted, or rotting.
Ugh. This leather armour’s even growing mold.
“Hmm. Everything’s green.”
“Green?”
“It means they’re not worth much. Not unsellable, but… ah.”
There it was.
Deep inside the farthest trash pile—a yellow glow.
Yellow. Of course it’s yellow. Sigh… It’s always yellow.
I swear I’m going develop a trauma from this color.
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh—there it is. Buried in that back trash heap.”
“This one?”
The pile in the far back was crusted with dry coral and barnacles—like it had been dragged up from the ocean floor.
The yellow glow came from under the mound.
“I’ll handle it.”
No other treasure here.
I formed [Vanish] in front of my fist and punched.
“Vanish Knuckle!”
The strike eroded the pile.
“Whoa! That’s [Vanish], right?”
“Y-Yeah.”
So she knew about it… oh well.
I kept punching the heap apart, the overwhelming stench of the sea growing stronger with each hit.
Had this really been at the bottom of the ocean?
Could there be a sea in the water dungeon?
Meanwhile, Bid-san was retrieving all the “green” glows I’d marked earlier. “Too good to waste,” she said.
“Vanish Knuckle!”
I tunnelled a direct path to the yellow treasure. After who knows how many punches—
I reached it.
The yellow light was a sword.
A rounded white hilt, no sword guard.
The white sheath was half-buried among the junk, the blade still hidden.
I grabbed the hilt and tried to draw it—
“!?”
What the—!?
The moment I gripped it, I felt an unbelievable weight.
I immediately let go on instinct.
“What’s wrong?”
“Ah, no, it’s this sword—”
“A treasure!?”
“Y-Yes. It should be this sword, but…”
“Whoa, just looking at it, it seems valuable!”
Bid-san grabbed the hilt.
“Ah, wait! That sword—!”
“It’s still buried, but I should be able to—!”
She pulled with effort—and the straight-bladed sword came free.
Despite however long it had been buried, the blade showed no signs of age.
As she drew it, light shimmered along its edge like turbulent waves.
I found myself murmuring without thinking:
“…It’s beautiful.”
“Eh—Wha!? What did you just say!?”
“Bid-san?”
Something seemed… off.
She looked surprised and said—
“This… this is an OOPArt!”
“Really!?”
“A-And I just learned a new relic skill!”
“Whoa, that’s—wait, sorry!”
Ah—right. It’s an unspoken rule not to ask someone what their relic does.
“…It’s [Swift-step]!”
“Wait—that’s one of the body movement types?”
“I’m trying it!”
And with that, Bid-san vanished—
Only to reappear right behind me.
“I did it!!”
Swift-step—like the blink of an eye.
It was practically teleportation.
“Wait—why behind me—uwaaah!?”
Suddenly, she threw her arms around me.
“Wof-kun, this is amazing! Amazing! Thank you!!”
“H-Hey! That sword! The blade—!”
Warmth and softness pressed against me—along with a bare, unsheathed sword flashing in front of my face,
making me feel the cold presence of death.
Realizing this, Bid-san hastily jumped back.
“S-Sorry!”
She sheepishly sheathed the sword, then stepped forward again, this time gently hugging me once more.
I nearly stumbled.
After a long embrace, she finally let go, clearly satisfied.
With a beaming smile, she spoke the thanks she’d rehearsed multiple times:
“Wof-kun—thank you so much!!”
“W-Well… it was part of the deal.”
“This sword! It’s called ‘Swift-step Blade’!”
“That’s… a good name.”
Or rather, it’s just as the name implies. Easy to understand.
The reason I couldn’t lift it must’ve been because it was an OOPArt.
Yeah. That has to be it.
I checked around some more, but aside from a few green items buried deep in the pile, there was nothing else.
No hidden walls either.
There was nothing more to do here.
With the request complete, we decided to head back to the surface.
Maybe it was because she was just that happy,
but Bid-san’s mood was sky-high.
Every time a monster appeared, she would use [Swift-step] to run rings around them.
Though honestly, using [Swift-step] to close in on water-element soldiers and slash them with the Swift-step Blade… didn’t seem very effective.
Since the sword was just an ordinary weapon, slashing only scattered water without doing damage.
Even aiming for the core, she kept missing.
Also, [Swift-step] still didn’t always move her exactly where she wanted.
“I still need lots of practice,” she laughed.
Unlike the way in, our return was smooth with no major incidents.
Since we had nothing urgent to do, Bid-san said, “I’ll treat you to a meal,”
and we headed to the tavern in the ruins.
We enjoyed a seafood feast.
After that, naturally, we walked back together.
As we passed by a general store, something caught my eye.
There was a tube-like basket under the eaves labelled “Huge Clearance Sale.”
Inside were several swords.
Noticing my gaze, Bid-san spoke up.
“Interested in the swords?”
“Yeah, well… a little.”
I walked over to the basket and grabbed one of the swords.
“!?”
The moment I touched it, I felt an unusual weight.
It looked like an ordinary sword—maybe slightly heavier than a knife based on appearance.
And yet, I couldn’t lift it at all.
It was far too heavy.
“Wof-kun?”
“Na?”
“Ah—no, it’s nothing.”
I let go of the sword.
“Those swords around here aren’t really usable.”
Bid-san said, gently stroking the pommel of her Swift-step Blade at her waist.
I could only chuckle awkwardly, “Haha…”
Night.
Far away…
A voice was calling to me.
(Wof… Wof… Awaken, Wof…)
“…?”
I opened my eyes to find myself in a completely white space.
Standing there was a beautiful woman with silver hair that shone with a mystical, blade-like brilliance.
“…The knife goddess …?”
She smiled at me—a divine, radiant smile.
