Chapter 30: Cat and Dog ⑦

Huh?

What…?

The handle and base had vanished, leaving only the unfinished blade to fall onto the grass.

“Huh?”

Why was it only the hand holding the knife that got frozen?
Why did the handle disappear?
Why is just the blade left behind?
Why did it fall like that?

“Fwoooooooohhhhhhh!”

The yellow-glowing Monoceros roared.

I see. So you did this.

You froze only the handle first…
You made my knife disappear again. You made me erase it!

“Alright. I’m gonna kill you.”

I clenched my fist, ready to use Vanish.

That yellow-glowing bastard of a Monoceros charged again, horn gleaming with white frost.

Fool. That’ll be your end.

I’ll erase you from the tip of your horn to the end of your tail with Vanish.

The radiant, smug Monoceros bore down on me, the air around us freezing, snow-like particles dancing.

My breath turned white. It was cold—but so what? My soul was now burning pitch black.

I shifted Vanish to the back of my fist. I would strike with a Vanish Knuckle.

Come on. Come. You’re about to be completely erased—without a trace.

“Na!”

Suddenly, Dagaa leapt out of its sheath on its own.

“What!?”
“!?!”

The yellow-glowing Monoceros slammed to a halt, braking hard.

“What are you doing—”
“Na!”

Smack! Dagaa slapped me across the cheek.

Wait, what? That… kinda hurt. Actually, it really hurt.

“Na!”

Dagaa’s almond-like red eyes sharpened in a glare at me.

“You…”
“Na! Na! Nana! Naanana!”

I had no idea what he was saying, but somehow, I understood what he meant.

Calm down. Stay cool. Chill out. Don’t lose yourself.

He’s telling me: “If you erase that thing, you’ll lose the super-rare and be stuck with just a fine.”
He’s right! That would be a total loss!
Also, ow. That really did hurt more than expected.

“Th… thanks, Dagaa.”

Realizing the truth, I dispelled Vanish.

I’d almost fallen into darkness.
I never imagined Dagaa would be the one to stop me — he really saved me.

“Na!”

Dagaa spun and transformed back into his knife form, settling into my hand.

“You want me to use you? But even with you…”

No—especially with you, if I mess this up… you could end up like that other knife.

“Fire Strike!”

Pakira launched a flurry of small fireballs.

I wondered why—until I saw the green-glowing Monoceros was entangled in vines.

So that one has a relic too!?

And then—my body moved on its own, yanked forward by some unseen force.

“What!?”
“Na!!”

My right arm, holding the Dagaa knife, was being pulled with tremendous force.

It was pretty rough, actually—hard to keep my balance.

And then, with no hesitation, I dove into the Fire Strike barrage.
Wait, what!?

“What is the meaning of this!?”
“!”
“?”

I heard Juicy’s howl in the distance.
But no time to think—I rolled with the momentum of the dive.

A perfect tumble—landed on my feet.
I was a little sore, but thankfully it was grassland.
Even though I’d jumped into the fireball swarm… I wasn’t burned?

“Dagaa… how did you…? Your blade… it’s red!?”

The Dagaa knife had turned crimson. It radiated heat.

This was a… Heat Knife!?

Did it absorb the Fire Strike fireballs!?

“Na!”

“Y-You want me to use this!?”

“Na!”

“…Got it. Let’s do this—together.”

“Na?”

If we use this, the ice isn’t scary anymore. We’ve got a shot.

“Dagaa, let’s go!”

“Na!”

Time to go all out.

I activated Silent One.

Remaining duration: 3 minutes.
Dagaa Heat Knife — enchantment ends in 60 seconds.

So it is a Heat Knife… and wait, it’s enchanted?

Anyway, 60 seconds left. Then I saw Pakira running over.

“Wh-What in the world are you doing!?”

“Pakira, I’m ending this on the next move.”

“Hmph? You… something’s different…”

(Blue eyes… Just like during the dungeon anomaly…)

Ah—I’d activated Silent One back then too.

“Use Fire Strike again. Hit both of them.”

“But it won’t work—”

“It doesn’t have to. I’ll use Fire Strike as a distraction.”

“Ho? Hmm. I see… Very well. But don’t kill them. Understood?”

“Yes.”

The yellow-glowing Monoceros had returned to the green-glowing one’s side.

It glared at me.

“Then I’ll go all out!”

Pakira attached a small metal rod to the back of her staff.

An attachment part!? The rod had a blue gem embedded in it.

Tiny fireballs swirled around Pakira.

So many… I couldn’t count them. A true swarm.

The yellow-glowing Monoceros released an icy chill.

The green-glowing Monoceros reinforced itself with vines and thorns — which then froze, becoming a solid armor.

“Hell Fire Strike!!”

Pakira swung her staff with all her strength.

A massive swarm of fireballs rushed at the two Monoceros.

It really looked like a hellfire barrage.

The two monsters were doing all they could to defend themselves—but would they hold?

Well, even if I get hurt, I’ve got Elixirs. As long as I don’t die, I’ll be fine.

I brandished the Heat Knife and ran in a wide arc toward the two targets.

“FwoooOOOHHH!”
“Fururururuuuu!”

Their attacks were so intense, they didn’t even notice my approach.

“Now’s the time!”

Suddenly, the barrage of fireballs stopped. This is it.

The yellow-glowing Monoceros noticed me at close range—but it was already too late.

(…No! My daughter—!)

A voice echoed in my mind, as if trying to protect someone. Did he just say daughter?

“Your daughter!?”

I couldn’t help yelling as I sliced through the yellow Monoceros’ frozen horn with the Heat Knife.

It didn’t freeze at all. The blade melted through it with a unique, soft sensation.

“GUOOOOOHHH!”
(Guooooooohhhh!)

The yellow-glowing Monoceros collapsed, horn lost.

The voice in my head sounded deep and dramatic—totally unexpected.

“Fururururu!?”
(Papa!?)

“Papa!?”

I shouted again as I cut off the green-glowing Monokeros’ horn.

Slicing while melting it down.

“Fyaaaaaaahhh!”
(Kyaaaaaah!)

The green Monoceros fell. The voice in my mind now sounded cute and girlish—also unexpected.

And with that, 60 seconds passed, and the enchantment on Dagaa’s Heat Knife wore off.

The blade drooped limply, like softened clay.

“Na…?”
“You did great. Really gave it your all.”
“Na…!”

Dagaa returned to his usual form, completely exhausted.

“Well done. Woof. So, what happened to this one?”

Pakira looked curiously at the worn-out Dagaa resting in my arms.

“Earlier, I jumped into the Fire Strike, right?”
“I was quite confused. That startled me—those fireballs suddenly vanished.”
“Dagaa blocked them with the knife, and it heated up into a Heat Knife.”
“A Heat Knife, you say? So that’s why it could cut through frozen horns. I see—that explains this outcome.”
“Yeah. Looks like he’s totally spent now.”

It’s probably something like a cooldown period.

Pakira gave a small, wry smile and gently patted Dagaa’s head.

“Na…?”
“You did well too, little one.”
“Na…!”

Good for you, Dagaa.
But even if you’re tired, stop staring at Pakira’s tail, okay?

“Now then, let’s call for backup, gather the horns, and look for the next herd.”
“Only two left, right?”
“Indeed. But first, let’s take a short break. I’m utterly exhausted.”
“Yeah, I’m pretty tired too.”

Also, I’m starving. Huh?
Pakira is looking off in the distance.

“Woof woof! Woof woof woof! Woof wooOOOONNN!!”

“…She’s still going strong, huh.”
“…Yep. She really is.”

Juicy’s still at it.
Still chasing. Still not giving up.

Dogs really are amazing.
Though, with so many Monoceros dropping out of the herd, it’s starting to look like a scene straight out of hell.

Pakira watched Juicy with a flat, unimpressed cat-like stare.

Just like a cat sitting on a wall, silently watching the family dog run around the yard.

Yep. They really are like a cat and a dog.
