Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 29: Cat and Dog ⑥

I decided to speak up, and started to feel a little nervous.

“Um, um, so… what’s the plan?”
“Well, let’s see. We’ll need a decoy to lure it away from the herd. Of course, we mustn’t kill the other Monoceros either… Wof, what’s the matter?”

“W-Woof-sama, um…”

Pakira-san and Juicy-san immediately noticed something was up with me.

I took a breath, then opened my mouth quietly.

“…There’s actually something I need to tell you both.”

“What’s this, all of a sudden?”
“Um, Wof-sama, what is it?”

“I, um… actually have a relic that’s a superior version of the [Eye of Fortune].”

“What did you say?”
“W-Wait, um, a relic!?”

“Yes. The relic is called [Wheel of Fortune].”

“Oh? The Wheel of Fortune, you say.”
“Woof. Um, a wheel?”

“Yes. [Wheel of Fortune] works almost the same as the Eye, but while the Eye can only see one color of light, [Wheel of Fortune] can see three.”

“Three? That many?”

“Um, what colors do you see?”

“First is green, same as the Eye. I call that one Rare.”

“Hm. Rare stands for rarity, doesn’t it?”

“Next is yellow. I call that one Super Rare.”

“Woof! Super Rare! That sounds so cool!”

“Hm. So Super Rare is even rarer than green.”

“Yes. And the last one is blue. I call that Super Ultra Rare.”

“…So it’s far above Super Rare then.”

“This one is extremely rare.”

And there’s one more. A mysterious purple light.

Even I still don’t know what it means. So I’ll keep that part to myself.

“Um, um, Woof-sama! That’s amazing! So… did you find Dagga-chan at the dump using that relic!?”

“Yes. I found himwith this relic.”

“I see.”

“Um, woof! Then, um, did you find lots of treasure at the dump?”

“Well… I found a decent amount.”

“Um, um, Wof-sama! You’re amazing! Woof! So amazing!”

Juicy-san looked truly delighted, as if it were happening to her.

Pakira-san, on the other hand, stayed silent, looking pensive.

“Hmmm. Wof. Don’t tell me you used [Wheel of Fortune] to find that.”

“…You mean…”

“The thing that saved us.”

“…Yes. That’s right.”

“I see.”

“Sorry for keeping the relic a secret all this time.”

“That’s fine. Even close companions have no obligation to disclose their relics. Keeping quiet isn’t a bad thing. Especially since the inferior version is right here—it’s only natural to stay silent. But why reveal it now?”

“Um, Wof-sama, I was wondering that too. Is something going on?”

I nodded in response to their questions. This was where the real conversation began.

“Yes. Near the Monoceros glowing green, there’s one glowing yellow.”

“Yellow was above green, right? A Super Rare.”

“Yes. It’s rarer than green.”

“Um, that’s… so exciting! My heart’s pounding!”

“More valuable than the magic silver—alright. Wof. Juicy. Let’s go after both.”

“Yes.”
“Woof woof! Um, got it! I’ll do my best!”

“Then we must decide who will act as the decoy.”

“Um, um, I’ll do it! I’m really good at chasing things!”

Suddenly, the word “sheepdog” popped into my mind.

That aside, it’s true—Juicy-san was the best fit for the role of chaser.

Pakira-san seemed to agree.

“Hm. Indeed. You’re the right one for the job.”

“Um, woof! Leave it to me! I’ll chase and chase and chase and chase!”

That sounds a bit too excessive.

Her eyes sparkled like stars, and she swayed her body rhythmically.

Her tail was wagging so hard it looked like it might tear off.

Juicy-san looked like she was about to dash off at any second. No, not yet. Stay. Stay!

“Then I’ll go after the green-glowing Monoceros. Wof, the yellow one is yours. I’m counting on you.”

“Yes.”

Only I can see the yellow one.

It had a larger frame, a body like a faded blue horse, and a thick, long gray horn.

All Monoceros look pretty similar—they’re magical beasts, after all.

“Juicy. Absolutely no killing. If you kill one, you’ll be fined.”

“Woof! Um, understood! I’ll chase them all over!”

“By the way, how much is the fine per beast?”

“500,000.”

“That much!?”

“Also, there’s a way to tell if one was killed. So you can’t cheat it.”

“You’re strict about this.”

“They’re rare, after all.”

“Um, um, is it time yet!? Is it!? Almost!?”

Juicy-san was about to explode from impatience.

Pakira-san let out a sigh.

“Well then, let’s begin.”

“Woof! Woof woof! WOOF WOOF WOOOOF!”

“That girl…”

Juicy the dog charged into the Monoceros herd at incredible speed.

For a moment, I was genuinely alarmed.

At that speed, it wouldn’t be surprising if she turned into a Fenrir.

Juicy-san is capable of that kind of thing.

Though… no matter how much it’s her, that’s probably not going to happen.

Juicy-san chased the Monoceros around. They may be bronze-rank monsters, but they’re still monsters.

And yet, dozens of them were being driven around by a single dog.

Our two targets were mixed into the chaos… well, I expected this.

“What should we do?”

“Can’t be helped.”

While watching with the [Eye of Fortune], Pakira-san raised her staff.

A swirling wind formed around the jewel at the tip.

“Na!”

“It’s hard to aim… Wind Edge!”

A blade of wind flew toward the green-glowing Monoceros being chased.

It curved along a predicted path—and just as it was about to strike the green Monoceros’s horn…

…the yellow-glowing Monokeros moved swiftly and deflected it with its own horn.

“Muuh!?”

It blocked the attack as if protecting the other. A dungeon monster did that?

Then the green-glowing Monoceros leaned against the yellow-glowing one.

“…”

The yellow Monoceros gently licked the horn of the green one.

Then it stood protectively in front of the green Monoceros and glared at us.

Seeing that, Pakira-san muttered, clearly puzzled.

“What… are they?”
“I wonder what’s going on.”

The two Monoceros had completely separated from the herd that Juicy was chasing.

The green-glowing Monoceros was sticking closely to the yellow-glowing one.

It looked… just like a couple.

Even Pakira couldn’t believe her eyes.

“…Are they lovers?”
“Even dungeon monsters can fall in love?”
“No way. Monsters in a dungeon falling in love… Still, what concerns me more is that big one. That’s the one glowing yellow, right?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Do you sense anything? There’s a faint chill in the air.”
“Chill? But it’s copper-rank, right?”
“…Still, it’s possible. I think it’s worth checking, even if we risk a fine.”

Tiny fireballs began to appear around Pakira’s staff.

With a firm swing, she launched them.

“Fire Strike!”

The swarm of fireballs rushed toward the two Monoceros.

But just before they could reach the monsters, the fireballs instantly evaporated in the chilling air.

“A relic!?”
“Just as I thought. This is going to be a bit troublesome.”

Pakira let out a wry smile.

Occasionally, there are special variants — subspecies.

The ability to use a relic automatically raised this Monoceros to at least the lower silver rank.

That made me wonder — is that why it’s glowing yellow?

“Fwooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh!”

Stepping in front to shield the green one, the yellow-glowing Monoceros let out a cry.

Its thick horn turned pure white as a freezing wind blew.

I instinctively drew a knife — not the Dagger Knife, of course.

It was the second knife I bought for 50,000, with a strange single-edged, upward-curving blade.

I couldn’t use Vanish — I couldn’t kill it.

The yellow Monoceros charged at me.

Frost leaked from its pure white horn, turning into shimmering ice particles in the air.

It came straight at me, lowering its head to aim the horn — like a spear.

I had a hunch it was coming for me instead of Pakira.

This Monoceros is male — I can tell, because I’m a guy too.

“Wof!”
“Stick to the original plan, Pakira — you take the green one!”
“Right, got it!”

But the problem was… the knife.

If I blocked the frozen horn with it, the blade would shatter from the ice.

I had to avoid that — no matter what.

“Fwoooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh!”

I dodged the horn at the last moment — the yellow-glowing Monoceros passed by me.

Good. But what now? I can’t use the knife. Is Vanish my only option?

But if I mess up with Banish… huh? My hand feels numb.

“Huh? Wha—AAAAHH!?”

Only the hand holding the knife had been frozen solid.

Wh-Why!?

“Dammit, why just this hand!?”

Frustrated, I quickly used Vanish.

I had to hurry before I got frostbite.

The ice around my hand — and the knife’s hilt — vanished.

The blade dropped.

Huh?

HUH??

Huh?
