Chapter 74: Crown of the Wonderland ③

The Clown.

The Fool. A humanoid monster.

“…No way. Is that really a Fool?”

Just as Alexander had said.

We were struck with dread.

The first to act were Liv and Bid.

Liv wielded her Maia Blade. The blade glowed red, unleashing a slash.

Bid nocked an arrow in his shortbow and fired. Mid-flight, the arrow split into multiple projectiles.

A Relic, perhaps.

But the Clown—

That broken Dungeon Lord merely laughed and casually flicked something from his hand.

A ridiculous, almost playful throw.

And whatever he tossed—a translucent orb—erased both the slash and the arrows.

“What the hell is that?”

“Hmph… Troublesome… A Relic.”

That was—

I was speechless. That was…!

“Oh, for goodness’ sake.”

Bid leapt and fired another volley.

Yet again, the Clown’s translucent spheres erased some of the arrows midair.

No doubt about it.

“Wind Edge!”

Pakira conjured multiple rings of wind, spinning her staff to launch them toward the Clown.

“Child, behind me.”

Lupinas stepped forward, raising her large shield and pulling me behind her.

Such a massive, beautiful round shield.

Gold-trimmed, pure white, polished like a mirror.

Undoubtedly an OOPArt. If I crouched, I could fit entirely behind it.

Wait—she carries this enormous shield all the time?

No, that’s not important right now.

What matters is the Clown.

The ability it used was—Vanish.

I was certain of it. That was undeniably the Relic Vanish.

“Ahahahahahahahaha!”

Laughing, the Clown conjured two Vanish spheres and casually tossed them in his hands before flicking them forward.

They left his hands? Phantasmagoria?—No. Something different.

He wasn’t conjuring countless projectiles.

Unlike mine.

But it was still Vanish.

Anything it touches disappears.

The others were in danger! I dashed out from behind Lupinas’ shield.

“Ah! What are you doing?! Stop! It’s dangerous!”

Lupinas’ alarmed voice rang out, but I ignored her.

I’m sorry. But the ones in the most danger are those fighting up front.

If I’m right, then no one else can see the Vanish spheres.

Liv was launching a bold melee attack.

From the rear, Pakira and Bid provided cover with wind rings and arrows.

A flawless display of coordination between vanguard and rearguard.

—Or so it seemed.

“Ahahahahahahaha!”

The Clown laughed. A full-throated, mocking cackle.

Effortlessly dodging Liv’s attacks, it laughed.

Erasing Bid’s arrows and Pakira’s wind rings with Vanish, it laughed.

What an insufferable monster. It was infuriating.

Then, while pretending to fumble in a clownish manner, the Clown conjured four more translucent Vanish spheres in its right hand.

Feigning panic, it juggled them theatrically—before snapping its wrist and hurling them forward.

“!?”

A blistering fastball hurtled straight toward Liv.

“Look out!!”

I sprinted forward, countering with my own Vanish—but—

His vanished, while mine remained.

“…Boy…”

“Liv, the enemy is using a Relic called Vanish.”

I barely made it in time. That was too close.

“Vanish…?”

“Invisible spheres that erase anything they touch. It’s a Relic.”

“…Vanish…”

“And the opponent can likely produce four at once.”

“…That’s beyond troublesome.”

I locked eyes with the Clown, my gaze sharp.

It was still laughing. Still juggling four Vanish spheres.

Was it stalling? Mocking us? Or just playing around because it was a jester?

I glanced at my own Vanish sphere, still floating.

Translucent, shrunken to the size of a baseball.

If the erasure effect was the same, they should cancel each other out.

But my Vanish remained.

“……”

Could it be…?

Was the Clown’s Vanish weaker than mine?

It was worth testing.

If I was going to experiment—or fight—it had to be now, while I was still at full strength.

A little longer until Stillness’s cooldown was up.

“Liv, I can see and block those.”

“…That… is that Crisis Perception?”

“Uh, yeah.”

“…That’s reassuring.”

“Child! Enough of this recklessness! Return here at once!”

Lupinas. She was worried about me, but… I’m sorry.

I still can’t go back.

“Boy… hmm.”

“Wah!?”

Suddenly, Liv’s face was right in front of mine. I jumped in surprise.

“Hmm… I see… it’s invisible… huh.”

She muttered, then turned toward the Clown, completely unguarded.

Wait, what is she doing!?

The Clown reacted, throwing four Vanish spheres at once.

But—none of them were aimed at Liv.

Instead, the four Vanish spheres bounced off the ground, erasing sections of the nearby walls as they ricocheted.

Vanish allows the user to control what it erases.

And the Clown was using it masterfully.

Now, invisible spheres were attacking Liv from all directions.

“Liv!”

“Sky Form… Subaru… Tayugete Blade!”

Liv’s blade glowed green as she slashed the ground in a circular motion around herself.

What was she doing?

Then, from the cut marks, a faint green, semi-transparent barrier emerged.

Before two of the Vanish spheres could strike Liv—

They collided with the glowing green barrier and vanished.

The rest of the Vanish spheres were also nullified upon contact with the barrier.

Tayugete Blade. So the green slashes could become a protective barrier.

Amazing. She could do something like that?

Seeing his attack nullified, the Clown laughed, hopping around like a fool before dramatically tripping and rolling backward.

The movement was comical, but there was nothing funny about it.

And one more thing—

I was now sure the Clown’s Vanish was weaker than mine.

If it were my Vanish, even Liv’s barrier would’ve been damaged.

Then, I noticed—the Clown was looking straight at me.

With a dramatic sigh, he struck an exaggerated pose and raised his left hand.

What now? I couldn’t move recklessly with Vanish still in play.

“?”

The Clown spun his left hand in front of his face, then slowly bowed.

Over-the-top, annoyingly theatrical.

“? What is he—”

Then, the ground rumbled.

“Kyaa!”

“What the hell!?”

“An earthquake!?”

“…No. Impossible. That was already… taken care of…”

Something burst from the ground.

A massive treasure chest—no, a Mimic.

A blue-green treasure chest covered in eerie, unblinking eyes.

“A Monster Box!?”

“Oh, come on!”

“Liv… hates… this.”

“Of all things, really!?”

Everyone groaned as the Monster Box creaked open—

And out poured an endless swarm of monsters.

Ah.

So that’s why it’s called a Monster Box.
