Chapter 31: Black Swallow Megadia(2)

I couldn’t help but be curious.

The one they call Black SwallowMegadia.

Another Grade II Explorer, like Agaro. I wanted to see what kind of person they were. Judging by the name, maybe a woman?

“I’d like to get a look at them too, but with this crowd…”

Pakila muttered.

Apparently, she shared my curiosity. However, the commotion had formed a solid wall of people, making it nearly impossible for us to see through.

Breaking through that human barrier was out of the question, and we had no intention of trying.

“…That’s true.”

I decided to use my relic, [Danger Perception].

Within the tavern, points of red and blue glowed in my vision. Even in a seemingly safe space, red areas always exist.

The brightest red was exactly where the commotion was taking place. Between two muscle-bound men, there was even a hint of black mixed in. I couldn’t help but smile wryly at the sight.

“Wof?”

Pakila asked.

“Oh, sorry. I was just thinking how impenetrable that wall of people looks.”

“Indeed.”

She replied, crossing her arms.

Then, I spotted something—a white point. A gap in the wall of people near the counter.

The drinking contest was taking place close to the counter, and they needed space for servers to carry drinks. As a result, the area near the counter and its inner side was left clear.

“Pakila, I’ve found a way.”

“What do you mean?”

“Let’s finish eating first.”

“R-right.”

She replied, confused but following along.

We enjoyed our meal and waited for a short while before making our move.

“Follow me.”

I said, standing up.

“Hmph?”

I walked over to the counter, where the owner, Barnes, had just stepped out of the kitchen.

“Barnes!”

“Well, well, if it isn’t Wof. And Pakila too?”

“Indeed. Your care is appreciated.”

Pakila said with a slight nod.

“An unusual pair, aren’t you? What brings you here?”

“Actually, I have a favor to ask.”

“Oh? Let’s hear it.”

“Could we step behind the counter for a moment?”

“Behind the counter?”

“What!? Behind the counter?”

Pakila exclaimed, her ears twitching in confusion.

“Yes, just at the far end,”

I clarified.

“The far end… Ah.”

Barnes’s expression shifted as he understood.

“You want to get a look, huh? Alright, go ahead.”

“Thank you so much,”

I said gratefully.

“You’ve helped me out a lot, kid. It’s the least I can do.”

Barnes replied with a hearty laugh.

“What’s going on?”

Pakila asked, tilting her head.

“It’s nothing major,”

I said, downplaying it.

“Hmph?”

“I’ve just shared a few cooking tips here and there.”

Using my memories of dishes from my previous life, I’d helped Barnes come up with a few recipes. It wasn’t much, but it seemed to have made an impression.

“You know how to cook that well?”

Pakila asked.

“Not at all. Just enough to handle simple meals. Let’s go.”

I said, brushing off her question.

“V-very well,”

She stammered, following me behind the counter.

We approached the human wall from behind, along the path servers used to carry drinks. This space was clear of people, offering us a perfect view.

At the center of the commotion was a table with no chairs. Agaro sat there, a mug of beer in hand. His face was bright red, and he was swaying dangerously. He looked thoroughly drunk.

Across from him was—wait, what!?

“…A goth lolita…?”

I muttered in disbelief.

“Ah, so that is Black Swallow Megadia,”

Pakila observed with mild amusement.

Opposite Agaro sat a girl dressed in full gothic lolita attire. Her long black hair was styled in an elegant princess cut, and her piercing purple eyes were fixed with an unsettling intensity.

The woman wore an elegant black and red gothic lolita outfit.

Strictly speaking, gothic lolita fashion doesn’t exist in this world. However, similar styles do.

Here, it’s called “elegance chic.” To me, it doesn’t seem all that different.

That’s why, in my head, I call it “gothic lolita.”

However… she was taller than Agaro.

Agaro is probably around 175 cm tall, which means Black Swallow Megadia must be nearly 190 cm.

She was huge. And the gothic lolita attire gave her an intimidating presence.

“Hey, hey, hey! Enough already, you…!”

“That’s my line.”

“Ugh! …Here I go!”

Agaro chugged down his drink, his effort clearly fueled by sheer willpower.

“Another round!”

The crowd erupted.

“Wooaaahhhh!”

“Sixty-sixth mug!?”

“Sixty-six mugs!”

Wait… They’ve drunk that much?

“What fools.”

Pakila muttered.

“Yeah,”

I agreed.

We both stared, dumbfounded. It was obvious to anyone that Agaro had reached his limit.

In contrast, Megadia, sitting across from him, looked completely unaffected. Her face wasn’t red, and she didn’t appear drunk at all.

Yet, since it was a drinking contest, she must have also consumed 66 mugs.

Without hesitation, Megadia tilted back her oversized mug and drank deeply.

“Phew! Another!”

She said as soon as she emptied it.

The crowd exploded again.

“Woooooooaaaaaaahhhh!”

“Sixty-nine mugs!”

“Sixty-nine mugs!!!”

“This is… This is Black Swallow!?”

“She’s so strong!”

Sixty-nine mugs!?

“That’s incredible.”

Pakila muttered in disbelief.

“…Agaro’s losing.”

“The mighty Agaro, defeated.”

Pakila said, shaking her head.

“He’s beaten dwarven warriors and even other alcohol-loving explorers.”

I pointed out.

“People used to say no one in Hydrangea could best him. Ridiculous.”

It’s true—Agaro’s reputation for drinking had gotten him banned from nearly every bar in town.

“And now, even Agaro…”

“Doesn’t stand a chance.”

Pakila concluded.

Agaro finally collapsed after his 67th mug, while Megadia drained her 80th mug to seal her victory.
