Chapter 16: Doom Sword IV

I was stunned.

“Agaro-san…?”

“Hey, are you alright?”

“Y-Yes. How did you get here?”

“We’ll talk later. We’re surrounded.”

Before I realized it, mimics had surrounded us, and a massive one was lying in wait, looming above us.

This was the worst situation.

How did the junkyard become a battlefield?

“Onii-chan…”

“Don’t worry.”

I smiled and patted the little girl’s head, who looked anxious.

“Wof. Can you protect that child?”

“Yes. I’ll protect her.”

“Good answer.”

Agaro-san smiled broadly, attached the sake bottle to his waist, and drew his saber from the back of his belt.

The saber was simple and unadorned, with a basic knuckle guard and a curved blade.

The hilt was roughly wrapped with cloth, and the blade had a dull, iron color—reminiscent of a kitchen knife.

“Well then, let’s do this. Flame Tongue!”

As Agaro-san called out, the blade of his saber glowed red, and faint smoke started rising from it.

As if sensing something, the mimics simultaneously charged toward us.

I raised Vanish and Agaro-san swung Flame Tongue.

The mimics were severed and vanished.

“Strong…!”

So this is the Relic [Doom], and the Doom Sword.

And that is Agaro-san’s saber.

No, it’s an out-of-place artifact. Flame Tan… I see.

It’s definitely a saber that looks like a tongue.

And this is the power of a Rank II explorer. The strength is incredible.

Now, only the massive mimic remains.

“Well, as expected, everything’s going according to plan. As expected of a grade-1 explorer…”

The giant mimic closed its mouth—the lid—and shook. Then, it opened its lid and toppled over.

“What is this?”

From inside the mimic, wooden puppets began to crawl out in a swarm.

These are the so-called “puppets,” humanoid figures with simple wooden bodies, no faces, but with armor and weapons.

The armor and weapons were mismatched and lacked consistency.

“Puppets?”

“Are they monsters?”

“Yeah, they’re monsters now. They’re Puppet Boxes. Anyone eaten by them becomes a puppet.”

“Eaten…?”

So those puppets were former explorers, huh?

Still…

“Aren’t there too many?”

Countless puppets had taken over the junkyard. Every single one of them was a victim.

“Wof. I’ll make a way out. Take that child and run.”

“What about you, Agaro-san?”

“Don’t worry. This is nothing compared to a dragon.”

Agaro-san extended his arm, and the Flame Tongue smoldered. The fire-tongue blade extended and swelled up.

“When I give the signal, run to the exit.”

“Understood.”

Agaro-san swung his Flame Tongue. Dozens of puppets that touched the blade were obliterated. A gap appeared in the junkyard.

“Now! Go!”

“Yes!”

I hurried to the exit, carrying the little girl. The puppets rustled as they came toward us. Everything was red, and I couldn’t see anything clearly.

“Ugh!”

I deactivated the Relic [Crisis Detection]. Agaro-san swung his Flame Tongue once more.

With that, the horde of puppets was cleared away, and the little girl and I managed to escape the junkyard. We made it out of the dungeon.

At the entrance of the dungeon, there were many people.

Explorers, guards, and gatekeepers.

“Anny!?”

“Ah, Onee-chan!”

The little girl ran toward the girl and they embraced, crying.

“I’m so glad…”

I was exhausted. I sat down without thinking. In the end, I didn’t find anything.

Well, it’s fine. What’s more important is whether Agaro-san is alright.

“Alright.”

I decided to go help him.

Just as I stood up, there was movement.

“Move back, move back. Wof, you too, get away from here. It’s dangerous.”

Gatekeeper Gauro-san and the guards were pushing the explorers and onlookers away from the dungeon’s perimeter.

At this rate, I wouldn’t be able to get back into the dungeon.

I could only hope he was safe.

At that moment, someone approached from the dungeon entrance.

“Ugh, seriously, was that just the warm-up…? I need a drink, damn it.”

It was Agaro-san.

He had a few injuries, but he was alive.

“Agaro-san!”

“Yeah. Are you okay over there?”

“Yes! But you’re bleeding from your head!”

“This is nothing serious.”

It looked like there was a crack in his horn. I don’t know much about Faun, but will that heal?

“Anyway, I’m just glad you’re okay. What about that mimic?”

“I managed to take down the Puppet Box.”

“Th-that’s amazing!”

With that kind of ability, it was probably a high-tier silver-grade monster.

And Agaro-san defeated it solo. This is what a Grade-II explorer can do.

“But if something like that appeared in the junkyard, the dungeon will definitely be closed.”

“Is that so…?”

“Don’t look so down. I’ll take care of the anomaly.”

“Y-yes. Please, I’m counting on you.”

“Yeah, I’ll make sure of it.”

With a reassuring smile, Agaro-san gently patted my head.

And then, the dungeon was closed.
