Chapter 14: Doom Sword II
Agaro said, “I’ll treat you,” and brought me to a tavern in town.
The tavern, called The Cider Inn, was known for its specialty: cider.
Cider is apple wine. From my past life’s memories, I recall tasting it once.
The most commonly consumed drink here, though, seems to be ale. The tavern owner, who possesses the relic [Freeze], makes chilled ale a highly sought-after commodity.
I come here occasionally—not for the drinks, but for the set meals. This world has rice.
The rice is more like long-grain, slightly dry Thai rice rather than the Japanese kind. Still, having rice is a blessing. Their buttered rice is particularly delicious.
This continent is a fertile land. There’s an abundance of milk, butter, cheese, salt, pepper, and sugar, all accessible to the common folk.
They also have spices and condiments resembling Tabasco and chili oil. Meat, fish, rice, and wheat are plentiful, and there’s even soy sauce and fish sauce. However, I’ve yet to come across miso.
Despite it being midday, the tavern was as loud and crowded as always. Most of the patrons were explorers.
“Ahhh, this is the best. Chilled ale just hits differently,”
Agaro said, draining his oversized mug of chilled ale with evident delight.
That was his third mug. He sure could drink.
“…What are you doing? Eat up, Wof. Don’t hold back.”
“O-oh, okay.”
In front of me was a table packed with plates of meat, meat, and more meat, along with a mug of ale.
I mean, I’ll eat, but this is a bit much. Meanwhile, Agaro had been drinking non-stop.
“Hey, miss! Another round!”
“Y-yes, right away.”
“You’re still drinking?”
“Of course. A man drinks as much as he can.”
“Uh… okay.”
I sighed and took a bite of a sausage. It was good.
“Hey, hey. Agaro, you bastard! If you were coming back, you should’ve sent a letter or something,”
Came a loud voice.
The one bringing the next ale was the tavern owner, Barnes-san.
A dwarf, he placed an oversized mug on the table with a loud thud.
“Barnes-san, you know this guy?”
“Wof, you didn’t know? I thought you two were together because you knew who he was.”
“What do you mean?”
“This guy—Agaro—is—”
Before Barnes could finish, the tavern doors burst open with a loud bang.
Everyone’s attention turned to the entrance.
Unfazed, Agaro took another swig of ale. The way he drank made it look so good.
Standing by the door was Arifa-san. It seemed she was the one who had thrown the doors open so forcefully.
She scanned the room, spotted us, and started walking over, stopping behind Agaro.
“Huh? What’s up, Wof? Eat up, eat up.”
“Um, behind you.”
“Behind me? …Guh.”
Agaro turned to look and froze.
“What are you doing here?”
“…Yo, Onee-san.”
“Onee-san!?” I couldn’t help but shout.
Arifa noticed me.
“Oh, Wof! What are you doing with my idiotic little brother?”
“Huh? Wait, you’re siblings?”
Now that she mentioned it, they both had red hair and were Fauns. Still, that alone wasn’t enough for me to tell. I’d never met another Faun, so I assumed red hair was just the standard.
“You know my sister?”
“He’s one of my regulars.”
“Whoa, really? That’s impressive.”
“Impressive?”
“Being one of my sister’s regulars is an honor, you know.”
“That aside, why didn’t you at least send a letter if you were coming back?”
“Barnes already gave me an earful about that.”
“Seriously, though. Normally, you’d send a letter.”
Arifa sat in an empty seat at our table.
“Barnes, I’ll have two of those giant ales, too.”
“Got it. And please open the door more gently next time.”
“Sorry. If it’s broken, this idiot can pay for it.”
“Hey, Onee-san!”
“And what’s with all this meat?”
Arifa sighed as she glanced at the table full of meat dishes.
Agaro kept drinking his ale.
“I thought I’d let Wof eat as much as he wanted.”
“…For me?”
I’d assumed it was just his drinking snacks.
“You don’t eat much meat, do you?”
“Well…”
“He’s not the same as he used to be. This kid’s doing well now.”
“Is that so? Well, if he’s one of my sister’s regulars, I guess that makes sense.”
“Still, I appreciate that you thought of me.”
I more or less understood. Agaro must have had a difficult, impoverished experience where he couldn’t afford food.
That’s why he’s doing this for me. Agaro finished his ale.
“Wof, eat as much as you can.”
“Okay. Can I order that buttered rice?”
“Go ahead. Don’t hold back.”
“Wof, order whatever you want, as much as you want. This idiot’s got money, after all.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah. After all, this little brother of mine is a Grade II explorer, known as The Doom Sword.”
“Wait… Grade II…!?”
I had heard of The Doom Sword.
It was said to be a title for a hero who single-handedly defeated a dragon deep in a dungeon far to the north.
That’s The Doom Sword Dragon Slayer.
With that achievement, he became a Grade II explorer.
“I’m kind of embarrassed about that Doom Sword title.”
“So, why’d you come back?”
Holding the oversized mug of ale I ordered, Arifa asked.
“Huh? To deal with the anomaly. There’s been a series of earthquakes, and even the Grade III Torquetum got taken out. I can’t just ignore it. So, they called on me, a Grade II, for help. It’s a pain, but I have to do it.”
“Now that you mention it, Torquetum was investigating dungeons.”
An anomaly?
Yeah, the earthquake was the second one now.
It’s rare for earthquakes to happen in dungeons. For them to occur twice within a few months is highly abnormal.
“Anomaly?”
“Yeah, most anomalies are the work of monsters.”
“Monsters caused the earthquakes?”
“Probably. Earthquakes are likely a result of a relic. As you might know, high-grade monsters use relics. Copper and silver relics aren’t much, but gold and gemstone relics are a serious threat.”
“Earthquakes from gold or gemstone-level monsters…?”
“Probably.”
“Your words really have the weight of someone who’s slain a dragon.”
“Stop mocking me, Onee-san.”
Arifa finished her giant mug of ale.
Wait, was that her second? She’s drinking fast!
“Ah, it’s empty. Hey, miss! Three more of those giant ales!”
“I’ll have four of the giant ones.”
“Y-yes, right away!”
As expected of siblings.
But seriously, how much are these two going to drink?

Being siblings was unexpected. But, guessing drinking runs in the family probably. xD
