Chapter 40: Night at the Surveillance Outpost

“Well then, let’s go over the plan.”

In front of the completely rebuilt Adventurers Guild, I turn to the gathered adventurers.

Today is the day for the “Unexplored Territory Development Request” that Saran and I have been working on together. This joint effort between trusted adventurers and the Adventurer Company is crucial for the future development of Malhas and as a countermeasure against the ‘Culling’.

Additionally, this first phase also serves as an escort mission. We’ll be mobilizing artisans from various places to rebuild the Deep Monitoring Outpost. Since it’s going to be a month-long assignment, the gathered adventurers are feeling a bit nervous. After all, they’ll be living in the dangerous depths for a while, so it’s natural to feel some anxiety.

“For the journey, ‘Mercia’ will lead the way, followed by the adventurers and then the artisans. Escorting the artisans will be primarily handled by the ‘Leda Adventurer Company’. Upon arrival, the adventurer groups will set up the camp, and ‘Leda Adventurer Company’ will handle perimeter security. Details for the following day will be explained on-site… Any questions?”

Several adventurers raise their hands in response to my voice.

“Norton, what do you have to say?”

“We’ve heard that returning to Malhas is out of the question, but what about purchasing supplies?”

“The use of armed merchants is also part of the plan. We’ve already ordered at fair prices, and we’ve also arranged transport requests for the following adventurers. That’s also part of the plan to check.”

“And what if we still need something?”

“Report it to Saran. Your recklessness is also part of the trial.”

The adventurers laugh at my words. It’s not a joke, but ultimately, the plan is to confirm what adventurers and artisans need while they’re on-site.

The Deep Surveillance Outpost is likely to become an important outpost on the outskirts of the pioneering city, and without developing it properly, it will be difficult to venture into the depths of the dungeon.

“Anything else?”

“What about Kati-san?”

“Did you finally do it?”

“Aren’t you taking her with you?”

“Alright, line up, I’ll send you all to the church.”

I raise my jet-black warhammer to intimidate the idiots.

It’s a somewhat sensitive topic, so leave it alone.

“Kati-san is currently tackling the Guildmaster, full speed ahead!”

“Hey, Kati…”

Kati, who was a little distance away, waves cheerfully towards us.

She probably came to see me off, but the timing is bad.

“So, hurry back, okay, Jurg-san?”

“I’ll do my best. Behave yourself while I’m away.”

I lightly hold Kati, who came running over, and stroke her cheek.

Satisfied with that, Kati in my arms smiles softly.

“If you’re good, there might be a reward waiting for you?”

“I’ll think about it when I get back. You always ask for the impossible.”

“I’m pretty sure I didn’t ask for anything that outrageous?”

Chuckling, Kati steps away.

After that, Fimia and Kati embrace lightly and start chatting.

I don’t really understand women.

“Alright, let’s get back on track!”

I give a light reprimand to the adventurers who were stirred up by Kati’s appearance, silencing them.

If we don’t leave soon, the plan will go awry.

“This time, it’s also a collaboration with the Adventurer Company. Let’s work together. As the Malhas Adventurers Guild, it’s not about favoring one over the other. Both are important. If there are any disagreements, bring them to me before things get physical.”

The adventurers and the Leda group nod in response to my words.

How to ensure that we don’t eat into each other’s work is my task.

Saran and Rolo will help, but cooperation between adventurers and the Adventurer Company is essential for the development of the pioneering city.

Especially when the exploration of the dungeon begins, conflicts over profits will become more apparent.

After all, I’m just a regular adventurer.

Handling such a large group isn’t really my thing from the start.

So, I’ve decided to think of them as one big party I’m leading.

That way, I feel like I can handle it somehow.

Well, they’re a bunch of troublemakers… but they’re probably not more of a problem than ‘me’, the ‘scoundrel’.

“The future of Malhas as the adventurers’ city depends on you all! I’m counting on you!”

With that, I declare the start of the operation.

The days at the Deep Surveillance Outpost were full of trouble.

Food was running low, and we were short on materials.

To top it off, there were several monster attacks.

Despite that, the outpost gradually began to take shape day by day, and the building for the guild staff was finally completed the other day.

It’s a sturdy two-story building made of a combination of stone, brick, and wood.

“Are we really allowed to use this?”

“Well, it might be my duty to check how comfortable it is to use.”

The night had completely fallen.

In the residential area on the second floor of the newly built outpost at the Deep Surveillance Outpost, I lightly chuckled while lying alone in the single bed.

Both Rolo and Saran had been kind enough to give us some privacy.

“Well, let’s graciously make use of this. How’s the comfort, Saint-sama?”

“It’s a bit cramped, isn’t it?”

“Well, it’s a single bed after all.”

I gently pulled Fimia, who looked uncomfortable, closer to me.

Our skin touched, and Fimia’s soft warmth gently enveloped me.

“How about this?”

“It’s cramped, but it’s reassuring.”

Fimia laughed softly and rubbed her forehead against mine.

Gradually, we’ve been getting used to being together like this.

Sometimes sharing a bed, sometimes enjoying the intimacy between a man and a woman.

…And as we got used to it, we also became able to think calmly about things.

I’m glad I accepted Fimia.

Because this woman “forgave” me.

That day, at that moment… I should have realized.

Fimia’s feelings, her resolve.

My immaturity as a hero wasn’t Fimia’s fault.

It was my own failing for not being able to fully accept her.

And that’s what led to Fimia’s anxiety and distrust.

I couldn’t bring myself to say honestly, “I want you,” and that was my failure.

“Jurg? Is something wrong?”

Fimia, clinging to me loosely, looks up at me with upturned eyes.

When did you become so good at being affectionate?

“No, it’s nothing.”

As I say that, I gently kiss Fimia’s neck.

Fimia, who let out a small voice, slightly moistened her eyes and whispered softly, putting her arms around my shoulders.

“Jurg, stop it. Our voices might leak outside.”

“Endure it. Otherwise, let me hear it.”

Grabbing Fimia’s waist, who shook her head with a red face, I slowly began to ravish the saint.
