Chapter 74: Mine Ants

It appeared suddenly. Wagner merged with the soldiers brought by Georg and proceeded through the mine. Unlike the main force led by Georg and his elite guard, Wagner’s unit, tasked with reconnaissance in the side passages, made significant progress thanks to the accuracy of the map he brought, encountering little resistance.

“This map is splendid, isn’t it? And this thing called the magic gun-sword is great too. With this power, I might be able to earn some credit! Indeed, my judgment was correct.”

“Yes, indeed…”

Wagner responds, concealing his complicated emotions, having his credit and the magic gun-sword snatched away by his irritating superior. Yes, the magic gun-sword he brought from Grace’s place has been discovered by the man in front of him and taken away.

Though he had complaints, in a country where power determines righteousness, Wagner couldn’t oppose someone who held both combat prowess and authority. Even if he wanted to consult with others, the man in front of him was not only from Wagner’s faction but also a higher-ranking noble. He couldn’t say anything knowing that it would cause trouble for his family.

“Haha, no matter how tough they are, they’re just monsters. They’re no match for me.”

A group that had strayed away, or three mine ants could be seen in the distance, digging minerals. With a smirk, he shoots through the weak spot of one mine ant with the magic gun-sword, then impales another approaching one with the sword of the gun-sword.

In the meantime, he takes down the remaining mine ant. The training he received under Vigna was no joke.

“Whoa, Captain’s strong, but Wagner’s gotten strong too!”

“Yeah, he nailed the weak spot perfectly.”

While hearing the praise from the other soldiers, Wagner watches the captain’s fighting style and swallows hard. This guy’s personality is frankly terrible.

But his combat sense is genuine. With little training, he’s effectively wielding the magic gun-sword, shooting through the mine ants’ weak spots…

“If things are going this smoothly, it’ll be a piece of cake. Alright, let’s push a little further.”

“But sir, isn’t our mission to patrol around here and make sure the mine ants don’t reach the city?”

“Hah, it’s because you keep saying things like that that you’ll never get promoted! Just let the results speak for themselves. If we defeat a large number of mine ants, it’ll ultimately protect Dwell, won’t it?!”

Ignoring the objections of his subordinates, the captain remains stubborn. Wagner, knowing this about him, stays silent and follows along. However, when he sees a mine ant missing an arm rushing towards them at incredible speed, he feels a sense of unease.

“Captain!! That ant looks strange. Be careful!”

“Huh? What’s with that one? It’s huge. The boss, maybe?”

The mine ant is heading straight towards them. Other mine ants at this distance would prioritize gathering minerals or protecting the queen, but…

“Could this be one of those individuals with strong self-awareness that Grace mentioned…”

“I’ll take it down this time!”

Perhaps exhilarated by the previous battle, one of the soldiers rushes towards the mine ant… only to have his head cleanly severed by the unharmed arm of the ant.

“W-What the…!”

Even as the subordinate is effortlessly killed and the captain fires his magic gun-sword, the mine ant moves slightly, deflecting the attack from its weak spot.

Its actions clearly exhibit intelligence.

“This one’s strong!! Captain, we should retreat for now—”

“Don’t talk nonsense. It’s by defeating creatures like this that wars are won!”

That was the captain’s final word. Evading the captain’s sharp thrust with its remaining arm, the mine ant swiftly slices through his neck in one fluid motion, spattering blood everywhere, before snatching the magic gun-sword from the struggling captain. Then, as if showing no interest in the captain’s agony, it retreats.

“Are you okay?! Someone, use healing magic or a potion!”

Wagner rushes to the captain’s side in a panic, but it’s unlikely he’ll survive. And recalling that the magic gun-sword is made with super mithril alloy, Wagner feels a sense of dread creeping over him.
