Chapter 37: New facilities

Ys-san sipped her tea and took a breath before speaking.

“First of all, I’ll like to ask you about the young farmer that was teaching others about farming. If there was a way to spread his knowledge in a more understandable way to everyone, would you help us? Or would it be more convenient for some of the leaders to have the knowledge in a variety of ways?”

“No, if I don’t have to teach them, it reduces my workload. It would be a great help.”

“I see. …… I knew Grace-sama would say so. I thought you weren’t afraid of the commoners gaining knowledge. The proof of this is that you gave the commoners the hoe. You must have faith in the people. I think it’s wonderful.”

Ys-san nods her head in satisfaction at my words. Come to think of it, someone said something similar to what she said …… about what to do if they only take your knowledge, or saying…… that a hoe can be a weapon when they rebel. I understand, but I want everyone to work hard and rejoice in the harvest rather than reduce efficiency for fear of such things. If there’s a rebellion, we’ll try not to let it happen, but at that time we have to fight. Of course, when that happens, we‘ll show no mercy.

Ys-san smiled at me as if she knew what I was thinking. Ah, so she asked me to make me think. She certainly sounds like a teacher.

“Another question. Who is that Noel girl? You said she was quick-witted, but was she educated as an aristocrat?”

“No, she is a refugee, a former peasant. I asked her to be my maid because I heard she liked cooking, but she’s much more quick-witted than I expected, so I asked her to come up with various ideas.”

After all, I hear that some aristocrats are reluctant to entrust commoners with so important a task. Is she like that?

I thought so for a moment, but then I saw a pleased emotion in Ys-san’s eyes.

“I see, I think that in many cases, such workshops are off-limits to women or women don’t like to take part in such things, but don’t Grace-sama and the dwarves care about it?”

“Certainly in the royal capital  there may be many people who care, but Asgard still has very few people, so if there’s something someone’s good at, it’s more helpful to have that person do it, regardless of gender, and it’ll lead to development. I have a female Kingsguard knight protecting me, so I don’t worry too much about gender and Bowman seems to enjoy listening to Noel’s story very much, so I don’t think he’ll mind since she’s good at what she does.”

“That’s right!!! Here, as long as you do your job properly, they won’t be offended if you use magic freely! The other day, I secretly let Sarah and the Golem have the bathtub, and we had an open-air bath! But no one blamed me for that!”

“You need to pull yourself together a little bit, Noah. I gave you a lady’s education, have you forgotten?”

“I’m sorry. Unlike our house where women are scolded not to use such magic, I enjoy being able to use the golems at my disposal…..”

Ys-san scolds Noah for saying something unnecessary with a sigh. She wanted to see the two of them take an outdoor bath—-! Isn’t she seriously going too far with the freebies while I’m gone? I feel like or rather Noah’s is being seduced by Sarah. I’ll keep an eye out next time.

“I think I understand most of what you’re thinking now, Grace. I understand that here, to some extent, you can try many things regardless of gender or status. Of course, it may be because of the current state of development.”

“That’s true, but I’m not going to change my mind about this kind of free and efficient way of thinking.”

As Ys-san says, the reason everyone is able to operate freely is probably because Asgard is just starting to operate as a territory.

The lack of an existing organization makes it easier to take on new challenges. The next territory, when doing business, went out of its way to talk to the Azul Chamber of Commerce and then made a deal with Edward’s place.

But I think our strength is that we’re not bound by existing frameworks like this. In the first place, the invention itself isn’t an existing thing. So I’m not going to change that.

“Yes, …… but even though Grace-sama thinks so, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the ones who get the concessions do. People change and that’s why I want to do what I do now in this state of Asgard.”

“Teacher…… could it be!”

Noah had something on her mind, and she raised his voice excitedly. She was so excited that Ys-san nodded at her.

“I have taught many things to noble daughters for a long time. I have also taught various things to orphanages and to commoners who were willing to learn, as a volunteer. As a result, I found out that some orphans and commoners are blessed with great talents, just as some nobles are gifted. But in the end, they were unable to receive a proper education, and few were able to nurture their talents.”

“Well, you certainly don’t have enough money to give orphans an education.”

“Yes and many aristocrats don’t like it when commoners offer their opinions with extra wisdom.”

Ys-san sighs ruefully. The number of jobs that a person from an orphanage or a commoner can get is limited to a certain extent. If you are lucky enough to become a merchant’s apprentice, you’ll be taught to read, write, and do simple calculations, but the rest you’ll have to learn on your own.

Most people do not have such opportunities. Of course, commoners do, too. Even if they have hidden talents, they die without being able to make use of them.

“Yes…… that’s why I want to create a place for them to learn. A private school.”

Ys-san said with a twinkle in her eye. And her words brought a strong excitement to me as well. Because wouldn’t it be great if I combined it with my “World Library”?
