Chapter 47: Plum Work is a Hassle, But It’s Fun

“Take responsibility! I’m hungry…”

Ah. This isn’t going to be a very logical conversation, is it?

Well, I can sort of understand, when you’re hungry you feel irritable and unable to focus on anything.

I’m also the type who unconsciously gets cranky when I’m hungry too.

Unrelated but, when you’ve messed something up and need to go apologize, it’s apparently best to go in the early afternoon after lunchtime if you can choose the timing. People tend to be more forgiving and relaxed after lunch. A full belly makes people kinder. That’s a fact. Even if it’s just a plain meal, they’ll still be in a better mood than before eating.

So maybe I should feed it something first to calm it down before trying to talk.

But it just ate Luna’s green magic… How is it already hungry again?

Maybe it forced itself to bloom those flowers?

They were really beautiful, sure. Was it really that desperate for attention?

I do feel bad for forgetting about it.

So far, the tree has probably “eaten” chicken manure and Luna’s green magic.

If green magic is something that helps plants grow—like a kind of magical fertilizer—then it sort of makes sense the tree would awaken after consuming chicken manure.

In that case, maybe just feeding it some fertilizer will satisfy it again.

The fastest way would be chemical fertilizer. Sure, chicken manure might be more “natural,” but I want something quick.

I used to use white pelletized chemical fertilizer and liquid fertilizer that you dilute with water.

A more fast-acting solution would be liquid fertilizer.

I always ended up going back to Yesponex, even after trying cheaper brands.

And if I get picky with Yesponex, I end up buying the powdered version instead of liquid, but measuring out that fine white powder makes me feel like I’m doing something shady—and honestly, it’s kind of fun.

…I wonder if I could just pour the undiluted Yesponex concentrate directly on the roots.

Nah, that’s probably not a good idea.

It’s a hassle, but here we go.

“Can I get your help?”

I asked Jude and Luna for a hand.

They probably don’t fully understand, but—

“Sure,” said Jude, and Luna made a little fist like “Let’s do this!” I’m really grateful.

I had Jude fetch a wooden crate from the shed, lined it with a trash bag, and then to pump some water into it.

Once we had enough water, I added some liquid fertilizer—my go-to 1,000 yen repeat buy. I eyeballed the measurements It won’t complain if it’s a little diluted. If it’s too concentrated it can be a problem, but too weak is probably fine.

Luna took a stick and stirred the mixture round and round.

It turned a faint blue—pretty, actually. I was a bit worried that if it splashed, her white apron might get stained. But she’s mixing it carefully and meticulously, so I think it’ll be fine.

I asked Jude to carry the finished liquid fertilizer and pour it generously at the base of the tree.

“Delicious!!”

I’m glad you liked it.

After that, I asked Jude-san to pour it in a circle a bit away from the trunk next. People tend to pour fertilizer right at the base of the plant, but the new, healthy roots that actually absorb the nutrients are usually a little farther out.

I don’t even know how many rounds we went through…

“I—I’m full… I can’t eat anymore… Have mercy! Please, have mercy…!”

We kept going until it said that. Maybe we overdid it a little.

And so, we ended up with a glorious plum tree.

It grew so big.

And now it’s full of plums.

We could make plum wine, plum syrup, pickled plums, and plum jam… working with plums is a bit of a hassle, but it’s actually fun.

I’ll need to buy some rock sugar, regular sugar, and salt.

But… even as I drifted into escapist thoughts, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might’ve messed something up.

Maybe because the plum tree had matured enough…

The sparkling tree spirit materialized.

A woman with flowing pale pink hair, wearing fluttery, Chinese-style clothing, and boasting a strikingly curvy, feminine figure was now leaning against the tree, rubbing her stomach.

Her facial features are gorgeous, an elegant beauty that you’d expect from a flower spirit.

Honestly, she looked like a goddess or some kind of fairy princess.

Kind of like… a real-life Princess Otohime.

Jude stepped protectively in front of Luna, shielding her.

Mimi, too, hissed from my shoulder, clearly ready to defend me.

But the sparkly tree didn’t look like she had the energy to attack.

“How could you do this to me… This body…! I wanted to be small and cute…”

She said this while gazing longingly at Luna, peeking out from behind Jude.

Looks like she got too much nutrition and overgrew. Her… ‘everything’ had developed too well. Unfair and outrageous, honestly.

But hey, at least she’s full now and probably in a better mood. Hopefully…

I was just about to try talking to her, when—

“Well now, isn’t this a surprise? A child of the Sacred Tree.”

A scratchy, strange voice rang out—husky, like someone who’s drunk a lot of alcohol over the years.

When I turned toward the voice, what I saw standing there was—silky blond hair, deep blue eyes, and pointed ears.

Just from the look alone, it was clear: This is a true elf. Beautiful beyond words, almost androgynous, their beauty was so refined it made your head spin.

Wait. Hold up. Too much is happening.

Mimi. Sparkly Tree Spirit. And now this?

My brain is at capacity.

No more, please.

“Grandma, who are you?” Luna asked the person.

Huh? Grandma?

“I’m Kaen,” the Elf answered.

Wait—what!??

Kaen!?

You’re telling me this is Grandma Kaen!?

No way—how is that a grandma!?

The gap between the image I had of “Granny Kaen” and this vision of ethereal elf perfection made my head spin.

Why? Why are all these strong personalities showing up all at once?

Why can’t they just come one at a time?

It’s like when I try to get in line at the cash register and suddenly it gets crowded. It was empty just two seconds ago! If we spaced out the queue, the cashier would be able to handle things without getting overwhelmed!

It’s weird calling her grandma Kaen, so apparently, Kaen-san had heard there was someone new starting a farm and she came to check things out.

She also said she sensed some unusual green magic—which must have been Luna’s.

Wait, could this be a good chance to ask about Luna?

“Um… Kaen-san, you’re… an elf, right?”

I mean, she obviously looks like one, but I wanted to confirm.

Jude-san gave me a puzzled look. “Saki, what are you talking about?”

Kaen-san’s eyes widened slightly, and she stared at me.

Sigh. Her face is flawless.

She beckoned me over with a finger, so I stepped closer.

Honestly, that face could hold up to a zoom-in. Not a pore in sight.

“How do I look to you?” she whispered.

I replied quietly, “Like a perfect, classically beautiful elf.”

She sighed and said,

“You’re from another world, aren’t you?” she said.

How did she figure it out so fast!?
