Volume 4: The Mystery of the Cat-Eared Girl’s Picky Eating

Chapter 23. Could it be more than just picky eating?

Recently, I’ve been able to spare a little more than 1,000 yen on repeat purchases, so I’ve been using the remaining amount to buy supplements for Luna, as well as sweets and raisins.

One time I even tried to serve beef bowl, thinking it might be a good change of pace, but it turned out to be just the ingredients inside that came out. I was really glad I prepared a bowl in advance. However, I also made a mistake—tea and chopsticks appeared too. So, the tea spilled. I guess I should have prepared a teacup as well…

If I were to buy a set meal, how many plates and bowls would I need? It’s a bit of a hassle, honestly.

It’s amazing to think that you could eat beef bowl for just 280 yen back in the day. It’s shocking to think about it now.

I realized that if I save up and try not to spend during the day, I could buy quite a lot of things in the evening, combining the next day’s budget, totaling around 2000 yen.

Well, actually, I’m a little scared that my remaining balance will be zero in the morning, so I don’t use it all up.

However, even if I can’t buy the 798-yen pair of reading glasses with a remaining balance of 682 yen at night, if I just focus and keep thinking about it, I can get the 1.5 strength pair by the next morning.

I checked when my remaining balance would return to 1000 yen, and it turns out it’s not exactly in the morning but rather when the date changes. So, if I wish near midnight and pass that point, I can make it happen.

So I thought about it yesterday, and in the morning I was able to successfully retrieved the 1.5 reading glasses this morning.

I was curious about how they appeared, but they didn’t just automatically come out at the place I thought they would. They go into standby mode first and can be summoned when I want.

This seems like it could be useful for something.

Hmm? I just had an idea. If it can go into standby mode, maybe I could use it as a kind of time-stopped stockpile.

If I deliberately make it so I can’t buy anything until the next day and then buy something for 100 yen after bringing the balance to 99 yen, the next day’s balance would be 999 yen instead of 1000 yen, and the item would be in standby mode. So, if I buy ice cream this way, it might stay frozen until I actually take it out—no melting, just frozen.

What if I buy small things, like a chiseled blade, and put them in standby mode, then take them out from the top? Could I do some kind of fancy attack like Gilgamesh? Gravity alone might not be enough, though.*

While thinking about this, I stretch my body.

The muscle pain finally came today. It came sooner than I expected. I’m happy, but also not happy about it.

I can’t work on the farm in this condition. I’m just glad my lower back is okay!

Old man Jill will probably be up early in the morning, so I should go and give it to him.

When I called out to him but he didn’t come out, I got worried and went inside, only to find Old Man Jill asleep, slumped over his workbench in his workshop!

He must have pulled an all-nighter.

I gently shook him awake, applying some pressure, and spoke in a low voice.

“Old Man Jill, I’d like to have that back.”

No,no,no, there will be no hugging your glasses and trembling cutely that’ll work on me.

“Hand it over.”

When I took it, he looked at me with a look of despair.

I understand how you feel, but pulling all-nighters isn’t good.

“Let’s set a work time. No staying up all night. And eat your meals. Can you promise that?”

He nodded vigorously, and I handed him the 1.5-strength glasses.

“I think this might be easier for you to see, so please try it.”

“Wow, I can see so clearly!”

His face lit up with excitement. He still seems to have quite a bit of a problem with farsightedness. I hope it doesn’t worsen beyond this, since I’ve never bought anything stronger.

After reminding him to eat properly and get some rest, I left Jill-san’s house.

I said what I needed to say, but I bet he’ll do it again. When you get absorbed in something, you lose track of time.

I’m sore today and don’t feel like doing heavy lifting. Maybe I should go to Luna’s place to give her the seedlings.

“Are you Saki? I’m Martha. Nice to meet you.”

Unfortunately, Judo-san wasn’t home. It can’t be helped since I came unexpectedly. I assume the person who answered is the person who looks after the house and Luna, the housekeeper I heard about before.

“I’m Saki. Nice to meet you.”

She is a plump, very kind-looking lady.

“I really grateful that Luna has gotten better because of you. Thank you so much.”

She bowed her head deeply. Our eyes met, and I smiled warmly. Wrinkles deepened around her eyes as she smiled, and I thought to myself, this is probably someone who always smiles kindly like this.

Her hands look hardworking.

Just from a glance, I could tell—she’s a housekeeping pro. She’s definitely good at cooking.

“Perfect timing. I brought these vegetables because I thought Luna might be able to eat them. Could you please figure out a way to prepare them so that they’re easy to eat?”

In the bag, there were onions, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes. It’s just a small trial, so I brought a little at a time.

“Oh, some of these vegetables are quite unusual. They look delicious. But Luna says vegetables are bitter and refuses to eat them, and if she forces herself to eat them she gets sick.”

She said apologetically.

There’s no way this lady isn’t trying her best. She probably tried many things already.

Just as I was feeling a little awkward, thinking I might have said too much, I heard small footsteps approaching.

“Saki-san, welcome!”

It’s Luna. She’s already out of bed and walking—it’s probably fine now. She’s as adorable as ever. Her eyes sparkle.

“What’s that?”

I show the vegetables to Luna, who is peering at me.

“They’re vegetables, but you don’t hate them. Aren’t they bitter?”

Hmm, her reaction seems a bit strange.

I show her the vegetables from the other bag, the ones I received from the farm.

“Yuck!”

Luna makes a face.

Is it possible that there’s more to this than just a case of picky eating?
