Chapter 16. Are People from Other Worlds Really Not That much of a Concern?
“In other words, Saki came from another world and can produce about 1000 gold worth of items from that world per day,”
After listening to my entire explanation, Judo-san summarized it for me.
Yeah, well, that’s basically how it is.
“Are you worried about how it will be handled here?”
That’s right.
“Hmm,” Jude-san said, , resting his chin on his hand, began to speak.
“First of all, we all know that a hero will be summoned from another world. I heard about it as an old story from my grandfather. Recently, monster activity has been unusually high, and adventurers have been saying it might be happening soon. But it turns out it has already happened,”
“an Old story? What do you mean?”
“It’s a heroic tale about a hero from another world who seals away the demon king, and restores peace to the world. He ends up marrying a beautiful princess and lives happily ever after.”
“I see. So, the hero didn’t return to their own world?”
“oh, I’ve never heard of a hero going back. For the common folk, heroes are like nobles or royalty. They’re considered to be distant, important figures, not someone you’d normally interact with.”
Well, now that he mentions it, that makes sense. If asked what I think about the heroes of fairy tales, I wouldn’t think they have anything to do with me personally .
“Even if someone from another world were to appear before my eyes, my reaction would probably be something like, ‘Oh, really? Is that so?’—that’s how I feel, honestly. But there are some groups who revere heroes as sacred beings, and from a research perspective, they might be extremely interesting.”
So, there are groups that worship heroes… I can’t help but grimace at that thought.
“So, well, judging from the fact that you’re producing things that I don’t really understand, I believe you might be from another world if you say so.”
Oh, how should I put it, I guess it doesn’t sound very believable. If I think about it, if I told someone in back home I was an alien, I doubt they’d believe me. Even if I had strange items, people might just think I’m a scammer or a bit of an oddball.
“If you say it’s a special skill, I can’t help but think it is. Otherwise I’ll just think it must be some kind of magic trick.”
If you put it that way, magic exists, so there’s probably all kinds of strange phenomena, so perhaps there is a basis for accepting strange things, like the ability to manifest things, to a certain extent. Also, since there are beastmen, if there are elves and dwarves, then people from another world may not be all that special.
“So, maybe I don’t have to worry too much about it?”
It’s a bit disconcerting, but it makes my life easier so it’s a relief.
“It would be a problem if you could produce an unlimited amount of something very valuable or valuable things, but there is a limit, isn’t there? I don’t think you can get anything particularly impressive out of 1000 gold a day.”
That’s right, a thousand dollars a day is not a lot of money!
“I agree.”
I felt a little brighter, and my voice was more relaxed.
“Oh, but there was an explosion…”
Ah, yes. I can also put out some explosives…
“Well, if you consider it a type of fire magic, then—”
“Then I could probably insist that’s the case!”
I want to push forward with that approach.
“That white bread was a bit odd. It’s more unsettling when there’s something different about things I’m familiar with than when encountering something I’m completely unfamiliar with.”
“So, food products tend to be more prone to suspicion?”
Now that I think about it, It’s hard to tell what’s unusual about things you don’t know, but It’s easy to tell what’s different about something you already know. I guess I have to be careful when handling foods that don’t keep well. But then again most of the useful items I can produce for about 1000 yen are mostly food-related. It’s complicated. Maybe I should limit myself to just me eating or sharing food with only those I trust.
“To sum up, the fact that you’re from another world isn’t really a big deal to the common people, but if it were true, some people might think differently. So, it’s probably best to keep the fact that you’re from another world a secret, or alternatively, to present yourself as a magician claiming to be an otherworlder, or as an eccentric researcher or inventor—that’s the safest route.”
I see, maybe it’s better to just talk big about myself rather than hide it awkwardly. The more suspicious it seems, the less credible it becomes, which might be a good thing. Like magicians claiming to have superpowers.
“Thanks. I feel a bit more at ease now.”
I thank him.
“You’re welcome,”
Judo-san bowed playfully and dramatically. His tail swaying in response was quite charming.
“As an eccentric researcher, I develop things like white, delicious bread. I can give you some tomorrow or later—actually, if you don’t mind it being a bit hard, I have some now.”
I still have four slices of the half-price bread I had for breakfast. Giving out food isn’t ideal, but with Judo-san, it probably won’t be a big problem.
“Just, the packaging might be an issue, so if you can hide it somehow and then burn it after you’re done eating, that would help. Also, I’ll give you this spice now,”
“Thanks.”
Yeah, I think the problem is not the bread itself but the packaging. I’ve rewrapped the spices in paper, but I can’t think of a way to keep the bread from drying out.
Wait… could paper itself be an issue?
“By the way, how is paper treated in this world?”
Copy paper is the cheapest available, but is it too white?
“Paper? We use it all the time.”
Now that he mentions it, I’ve used paper for request forms and maps. It wasn’t pure white though, I think.
“Is it not particularly high-quality?”
“There are expensive papers too. The paper we usually use is recycled. I don’t know the details, but apparently, plant fibers or used paper are mixed with a slime solution and then re-pulped,”
Oh, slime! I can bring out slime and I like it—what a dream. Since it’s recycled, maybe that’s why it’s not white? If some are white, I could use copy paper. But then, it may raise suspicion about why high-quality paper is used for such purposes.
Well, since I am an eccentric inventor, I guess that’s part of my charm!
And so, after having any questions that came to mind answered, we headed back to the city and then went our separate ways.
From what I heard on the way back, I couldn’t help but think that his little sister probably isn’t getting enough nutrients.
I have a few ideas I want to prepare, though it might take some time.
