Chapter 14. Let’s Explode the Abandoned Mine Mountain
The place that Jude-san brought me to was an abandoned mine mountain.
It’s shaped like a large bowl with steps, the center sunken in.
It looks like a doodlebug’s nest
This used to be an open-pit iron mine, but it was abandoned due to a decline in production.
There’s no one around, and nothing burning nearby.
“Thanks. This place is perfect.”
“Yeah, I’ll go and see if there are any rock turtles nearby.”
Jude-san goes off to keep watch.
Apparently, rock turtles are monsters that often appear on rocky terrain.
If there are any, he will probably exterminate them.
I start checking off each thing I wanted to try.
First, I buy a one-yen worth of tap water and try to see how far I can make it appear.
I do it about three times, gradually increasing the distance, and I’m surprised that it works smoothly each time.
Wait, could it be that I can make it appear as long as my line of sight is clear?
Next, I also tried putting out 1 yen worth of gas
When I sniff around, it smells of gas. It was definitely coming out.
And I can also make it appear at a distance.
I want to set it on fire, but I wonder how I could ignite it from afar.
Even if I try lighting a match and throwing it, it probably won’t fly far.
Could I just buy electricity instead?
Can I generate a fire with one-yen worth of electricity?
Let’s try it out.
I buy gas at a distant spot and tried buying electricity there too, but nothing happens.
Maybe the gas dispersed because too much time passed while I searched for electricity.
Gas and electricity were now displayed at the top of my purchase history, so I try again, this time buying five-yen worth of gas.
But again, it fails.
I guess it would be impossible to do this in an open area unless the gas concentration is a bit higher.
Next, I’ll try something that came to mind when I was sprinkling spices yesterday—namely, flour.
If I can sprinkle flour, I might be able to do a dust explosion.
I’ve bought 1 kg of plain flour for 98 yen before, so I sprinkle about 10 yen’s worth of it and then buy electricity there.
BOOM!
Whoa, it exploded. A fierce flame erupted instantly.
Even though I was a distance away, a blast of hot wind reached me.
If this is what 10 yen’s worth can do, then spreading a thousand yen worth might produce a decent explosion.
But I don’t really know how big an explosion it will cause.
Hearing the explosion, Jude-san comes back.
“Did you do that, Saki?”
“Yeah, it seems that depending on what I manifest, it can explode.”
“What on earth did you put out exactly?”
“Flour.”
“Flour!?”
“Scattering combustible powder can sometimes cause an explosion. I tried to replicate that. But it doesn’t seem like I can control the scale of the explosion.”
“Is that even possible?”
“Yeah, I’ll try with other things too.”
Next, I try bringing out kerosene, but it didn’t explode. Or rather, it wouldn’t catch fire.
Gasoline doesn’t quite explode but ignites around the third try, burning well.
Thinking since there’s a fire source nearby, I try bringing out gas again, which ignites and explodes fiercely.
I sprinkle flour on it again, resulting in another explosion.
Next, I imagine spraying kerosene as a fine mist, like with a spray bottle, and it causes a rapid combustion explosion.
Similarly, when I produce gasoline as a mist, it explodes!
Benzene also explodes. Benzene ignites immediately even on its own; it’s highly flammable.
I starting to get the hang of it: If you make it into a fine mist it will explode
But without a fire source, it’s difficult. If I do it near myself, it becomes a self-destructive technique.
I think I could cause an explosion if the monster was a fire type and there was an existing fire source, but wouldn’t fire type monsters have some fire resistance?
“Looks like it’s exploding…”
“There’s an explosion…”
Jude-san seems stunned by the series of blasts happen one after another.
“Thanks to this, I’m starting to get a feel for it, but I don’t think I can use it for self-defense, it doesn’t seem very practical.”
Unless I solve the fire source problem, it’s too impractical as an attack.
I think it would be hard to set someone on fire, then run away to give some distance from them and buy gas or gasoline to blow them up.
Even if it works, I’d be worried about the flames spreading to the surrounding area.
I want a simpler, more effective attack method. Is there any good way?
“Self-defense, huh? I have one question—can you produce small objects from a long distance with your skill?”
Jude-san asks.
“Yeah, I can produce them.”
“Then, wouldn’t it be effective as a blinding tool if you just produce something near the face?”
Ooooh!
I hadn’t thought of that. If the goal is to buy myself some time to escape, it’s a very good idea.
Something that irritates the eyes—like Tabasco?
If I want to go cheap, maybe salt and pepper?
I look at Jude-san gratefully.
“Hey, don’t try it on me,”
He frowns, but I wasn’t planning to do any experiments on him.
Come to think of it, chlorine-based or acidic cleaners could also cause pain.
“I want to practice on a monster or animal that even a beginner could defeat. Do you know if there are any around here?”
If possible, I’d like to experience it firsthand.
“The animals ran away from the sound of the explosion. As for monsters, well… if you go into their territory, They’ll think they’re being attacked and come at you, like that.”
He points in a certain direction, and I see a huge turtle.
Is that a rock turtle!?
It’s bigger than I imagined. Its rugged shell looks tough, and it looks quite strong.
It’s a big target, but the turtle’s head is small compared to its body, and its eyes are even smaller.
No, no, Jude-san, that’s definitely not suitable for beginners!
