Chapter 12. Let’s Go to the Market and Eat Meat
Well, it seems there’s still some time before the sun goes down.
The verification can’t progress just inside here. I’m curious whether I can produce items from any distance or how far away I can do it.
I want to step outside and see what the city is like while also testing out my skills.
However, most of what I want to test involves explosions and fires, so I probably can’t do that inside the city. Explosions in the city are definitely a no-no.
It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it outside, but dangerous tests like that will have to wait until tomorrow or later, outside the city.
For now, I’ll head for the central square that was on the map Matilda showed me.
I put on my cloak, carry my bag on my back. I wish I had a mirror. Well, I probably don’t look that strange.
I open the storage room door, made sure there was no one around, then stepped out from the storage.
From here, the square should be in that direction.
I’d like to test how far I can manifest objects while no one’s around, but I can’t think of anything suitable to bring outright now.
Something light, that there’ll be no danger if it falls from above —probably up to about 10 yen worth.
I think I’ll go with a “U◯ui stick.”
I look up and try to buy a 10-yen U◯ui stick.
It came out.
I was able to get it pretty high up. No need for concentration or anything, it just happened easily.
I pick up the fallen U◯ui stick and put it into my bag. If I can produce objects at that height, buying a box of plastic bottles would result in quite a drop energy.
Maybe I could even take down an unwary animal.
To the side, I see a person approaching. I pass them by casually, just pretending that I was just walking along.
Little by little, more people started to fill the street.
In one corner of the square I reached, there are stalls lined up like a marketplace, selling various goods and food.
There are miscellaneous goods and food on display. I wonder if there’s any grilled meat somewhere. A savory smell wafts through the air.
Drawn by the smell, I walk closer and see a stall with a line of people waiting.
It must be delicious. Driven by curiosity, I try to join the end of the line but then notice something.
The person in front of me had cat ears on their head. I instinctively covered my mouth to stop the sound that was threatening to leak out.
A-a, it’s a beastman!!
But, the person with the cat ears isn’t a cute girl but a tall man with light brown hair mixed with gray. He seemed to be an adventurer, as he had a large sword hanging from his waist.
My gaze naturally drifts to the long, leisurely swaying tail around his waist.
That tail with its light brown and gray striped pattern reminds me of the cat I liked at the cat café—Mash-kun. I remembered how exquisite he felt when I petted him.
I must have been staring too long, because the man seemed to sense my gaze and turned to look back at me.
“Excuse me?”
Deep green eyes. Their eye color is exactly the same. And his face is good-looking—high facial symmetry, deeply carved features.
“Ah! I’m sorry. You looked like a friend, a cat I know…”
“I see.”
The man nodded and narrowed his eyes. His gestures are so similar to Mash-kun that I instinctively held out my index finger and shook it up and down to a rhythm, making a four-beat pattern. When I do this, Mash-kun used to come over to me.
The man’s eyes widen in surprise for a moment, then he chuckles, bends down, and gently presses his nose to my finger.
He then places his right hand on his chest and elegantly bows.
“Sandar Jude of the Feline Tribe responds in kind to the kindness and affection shown to him.”
It’s a strangely melodic language that sounds like singing. The translator conveyed the meaning to me.
“You have a cat tribe you’re quite close with. This is the first time I’ve been treated like that by a human. They call me Judo. Nice to meet you.”
“I’m Saki. Ah, we won’t be able to meet again… but, likewise, nice to meet you.”
Is it okay to greet the cat tribe with just a finger tap here too???
No, it doesn’t seem very common…
Does this feel like I’m showing him a lot of affection?
“I was drawn by the smell, but is the food here that good?”
“Oh, Mara’s beef skewers are exquisite.”
As if remembering the taste, his tongue flicks out alluringly.
If it’s that delicious, I definitely have to try it. I eagerly join the line.
The rotation is surprisingly fast given the number of people waiting, and soon it’s my turn and Judo’s.
Chunks of meat were skewered on a wooden skewer along with some vegetables. From the looks of it, the meat wasn’t very fatty and was mostly lean.
What’s irresistible is the aroma. The fragrant smell of the grilled meat makes my mouth water.
“One, please.”
And I offered a large silver coin.
“Thanks you!”
He hands me the skewer and my change. I get 9 silver coins back, so that means it’s 1000 gold.
There’s a place to sit a little farther away, so I head there. On the table is a tube for disposing of finished skewers and some salt.
When I bit into the steaming meat, the delicious flavor of the meat spread throughout my mouth.
“Umm, so good!!”
I couldn’t help but cry out.
Next to me, Judo, who bought three skewers, is also biting into the meat. Ah, I can see his fangs. He looks at me with satisfied eyes as I spoke. Yep, just as he said, it’s really delicious.
This meat is amazing—very tasty. Despite being lean, it’s incredibly tender, and the more you chew it, the more rich the juices come out. The fat isn’t greasy but packed with flavor.
The seasoning is simple: just salt.
Just that makes it unbelievably delicious. I’m so happy.
But, I feel like this meat has even greater potential.
It could become even more delicious!!
Yes, if I added those three major outdoor spices—those renowned for outdoor cooking—it would probably taste incredible. Absolutely delicious. Which would suit better—soy sauce, garlic, or herbs?
I‘ve bought them all before so it’s hard to choose, but I’m leaning toward garlic here.
I remember that a single pinch costs about 2.5 yen when I last used it, so I’ll try to see if I can get the 2 yen worth to sprinkle softly over the whole thing rather than all at once
And, success!
The spice is evenly and beautifully sprinkled, with a wonderful aroma.
There’s extra salt on the table too, so it is not bad manners to adjust the seasoning yourself.
When I took a bite, it was just pure bliss. A magical spice indeed. Just one pinch really changes the taste dramatically. It deepens the flavor. It raises the level. The vegetables sandwiched in between are also delicious!
I eat with relish, lost in happiness.
It’s delicious and I’m happy!
