Chapter 205: The Power of the First Generation
With a dramatic rustling through the thicket, three First Generation machines burst onto the road.
Two of them blocked the caravan’s path, while one circled around to the rear.
The Second Generation, including Isamu, followed a bit later, taking their positions. Drexler moved to the rear, Marcella held her position near the forest, and Isamu pretended to shift to the opposite side, moving past the First Generation that blocked the front.
“We’ll take out the escorts first!”
A voice called out from the First Generation standing at the front, while the other one unsheathed a longsword and rushed toward Framboise.
(Just a little faster than the Second Generation… Framboise, I’m counting on you!) Isamu thought as he observed the movement from the corner of his eye.
“Wind Wall!”
Seeing the First Generation charging, Framboise quickly cast a faint green barrier of swirling air in front of her.
“What!?”
The First Generation pilot let out a surprised shout as the magic wall suddenly appeared in its path.
They had expected a perfect ambush, but Framboise’s flawless timing caught them off guard.
The pale green wall, slightly tilted, appeared at about two meters above the ground, just taller than the head of the First Generation. The wall spanned nearly five meters wide, making it impossible to jump over or evade.
Realizing this, the pilot attempted to brake, but the heavy magic golem couldn’t stop in time and crashed into the wall, only slightly slowed.
*Crash!*
The First Generation’s arms crossed instinctively, smashing against the wall with a dry, echoing sound. A piece of its armor shattered and scattered from the impact.
(As expected, they’re using anti-magic armor…)
Isamu, observing the battle as he moved, caught a brief flash of magic energy on the armor’s surface.
(They’re probably using anti-physical armor as well. It was the right decision to ask for a Wind Wall.)
Since both magic and physical defenses were used on the Second Generation’s exterior, Isamu had anticipated that the First Generation would be similarly equipped. This is why he had requested a Wind Wall for the initial defense.
When the target is a living being, it’s common to use Stone Wall, which remains in place even after the caster releases the spell.
However, when dealing with anti-physical armor, the impact may be significantly nullified.
In contrast, Wind Wall isn’t treated as a physical force, and anti-magic armor is generally less effective against wind-based spells, making it a better choice in this situation.
As expected, Isamu’s prediction was right.
Although some of the effect was diminished by the anti-magic armor, Wind Wall still proved effective against the target’s exterior.
(Alright, I’ve gathered some useful intel!)
Isamu mentally celebrated with a fist pump.
“Wind Wall!”
This time, a wall of air expanded to the full width of the road at the caravan’s rear.
This wall was larger in both height and width compared to the one Framboise had created earlier. It was the work of none other than Samuel, said to be the kingdom’s top mage.
“Tch, what a nuisance! We’ll surround them! You stay put!”
Seeing this, the First Generation leader gave orders, moving to the right side. Meanwhile, Isamu’s golem stayed at the front to block their advance.
“Fire Blast!”
“Rock Fist!”
As the First Generation repositioned themselves, continuous spells were launched from the other escorts.
*Boom!*
*Crack!*
“Whoa!?”
“Again!?”
Both First Generation golems attempting to close the gap let out startled cries. Despite the world of magic, not many people can wield it effectively.
Even seasoned knights might use magic, but they hadn’t expected the caravan’s adventurer escorts to be firing off spells one after another.
(They’re getting hit with magic, but it doesn’t seem to be doing much damage. Fire doesn’t work, and earth-based magic is treated as physical…)
Isamu carefully watched the flickers of magic light that appeared each time a spell hit.
Although the adventurers appeared ordinary, they were actually magic knights of the Felker family. The fact that the First Generation machines were only surprised by direct hits from such elite spells showed just how formidable they were.
“Water Ball!”
While the First Generation advanced despite the hits, a large water orb was launched from the knights and splashed against the raised shields with a loud *splash*. Water sprayed everywhere, briefly blinding the First Generation, and momentarily halting their steps.
Seizing this opportunity, two knights charged from behind the escort who cast ‘Water Ball’ and slashed at the First Generation.
“Giiin!”
The slash aimed at the knee made a dull sound, leaving only a faint scratch on the surface of the armor.
(With a standard Ferris-1 model, that’s about as much as you can expect…)
The knights were equipped with the Ferris-1, a mock magic sword enhanced with a magic circle to improve its cutting power. While anti-physical armor isn’t particularly effective against slashing attacks, the original material must have been quite hard, and there seemed to be an upgraded anti-physical magic circle engraved on it as well.
The First Generation immediately counterattacked, swinging its sword in a horizontal sweep, but the knights skillfully evaded the blow, ducking under the swing made with only the giant’s arm.
Though they appeared to dodge it with ease, the knights’ ability to remain calm and handle the large sword of a six-meter-tall giant was a testament to their extensive combat experience and training.
The knights, after dodging, split into two groups—one charging forward, the other to the left.
On the left stood Marcella, while Isamu, piloting the Second Generation golem, awaited in front.
“Rock Fist!”
Without hesitation, the knights hurled magic at both targets. Large rocks crashed into the exterior, sending a pulse of magic light along the surface.
(Is this what it feels like to take a magic hit while riding a magic golem? Even knowing there’s anti-physical armor, it’s still terrifying…)
Isamu shielded his head with one hand, trying to gauge the sensation of being hit by a spell while piloting the magic golem for the first time. Meanwhile, a clash unfolded, with the Second Generation thrusting its spear at the knights, who skillfully dodged and retaliated with magic and sword strikes.
Watching this, the First Generation shouted orders.
“Alright, let the imitations keep them busy! They’re better than expected, so let’s go secure the carriage!”
“Got it!”
The guards, who had seemed easy to defeat, proved tougher than anticipated. Prioritizing their main objective—securing the spoils—the commanders decided not to waste time trying to defeat them just yet. After all, they weren’t in danger of suffering fatal injuries, and their primary goal was the treasure, not the guards.
Now, even the First Generation golems that had been holding off the rear joined the effort to capture the carriage.
“Hmm, so that’s their move.”
Samuel muttered before giving his next set of orders with a sigh.
“Framboise, deploy Wind Wall, then fire Lightning Bolt. Aim for three-tenths of your power at the one in front.”
“Understood!”
“Everyone else, scatter your elemental spells for distraction and recover the driver.”
“Understood!”
“Wind Wall!”
Upon receiving their orders, Samuel and Framboise immediately deployed Wind Walls to the front and rear. Though the walls were not as tall as before, their range had been expanded.
“Ice Lance!”
“Rock Fist!”
“Water Drill!”
In coordination with the deployment of the wind walls, the knights unleashed a barrage of magic from different elements, creating a wide, distracting spread.
“Tch, damn it!”
The first generation in front, unable to head straight toward the carriage, spat out an insult.
“Lightning Bolt!!”
At that moment, Framboise’s magic erupted.
**Crackle, crackle, crackle!!**
“Guh!?”
The operator let out a muffled voice as they took a direct hit from the Lightning Bolt.
“Oh, so it doesn’t fall even with Framboise’s 30%? Quite impressive.”
Samuel said, amazed.
It seemed they had taken some damage, but the opponent’s first generation was still standing.
The 30% refers to the amount of magical power infused; it means that 30% of the maximum magic power was used. If a magic user expends more than 50% at once, they will temporarily suffer from magic power depletion, and using a total of over 50% will result in fatigue. Thus, magic users typically fight in the field while keeping at least 50% of their magic power in reserve, unless absolutely necessary. Considering this, dealing 30% in a single blow can be said to be close to the maximum limit of power.
Moreover, Framboise is one of the top-tier magic users in the kingdom. Given that she couldn’t take down the opponent even after that, it’s no wonder Samuel was surprised.
“Well then, how about this? I’ll give you 20%… ‘Chain Lightning’!”
Once again, purple lightning burst forth, capturing the first generation in front.
**Crackle!!!!**
“Gaaaah!!!”
The area suddenly lit up like the height of summer, and a scream erupted from the first generation struck by the magic.
Then, after staggering a couple of steps, it knelt down, unable to move.
“What!? I thought lightning magic wouldn’t work!?”
The other first generation, rushing in from the front, exclaimed in shock upon witnessing this.
“Well, I suppose that’s finally it… It doesn’t pay to fight fair.”
Samuel murmured, looking at the immobile first generation.
“Alright, we’ve secured the driver. Let’s escape through the hole in the front! Leave the carriage!”
“Understood!”
After the knights helped the driver onto the horse, they signaled to retreat.
“Tch! Those ‘imitation’! Don’t let them escape!!”
The first generation that had rushed in from the back shouted, but Marcela and Isamu in the front were locked in an equal battle with several knights and had no room to hold them back.
“Rock Wall!”
“Rock Fist!”
Samuel and the others spread their magic to assist the second generation of Isamu and Marcela, helping the knights to escape. Eventually, they slipped past Isamu and dashed south down the road.
(Phew, it seems we managed to get through safely. I thought I might have to intervene in the fight, but as expected of Samuel and his team.)
Isamu breathed a sigh of relief as he watched Samuel and the others elegantly dash away.
Knowing about the state of the Zun army, Isamu had suspected they would choose to ambush any caravan that seemed profitable passing nearby, and they had staged a little play for that. This was, of course, to confirm the combat capabilities of the first generation. It would have been risky if the strategist held decision-making power, but they also had a backup plan in case they didn’t get involved.
Still, he felt relieved that they fell for such a simple tactic.
“Damn it!!”
The first generation at the back spat, watching the group that was running away.
“What the hell are they? There’s no way they’re just ordinary adventurers!”
While still grumbling, they began to examine the cargo of the carriage.
The cargo included food, water, fabric and wooden pillars that appeared to be a tent, as well as weapons like armor and swords.
“Hey, hey, hey, what’s this? Were they weapon merchants? Huh? What’s going on?”
The first generation tilted their head, perplexed by the revealed cargo, while Drexler’s magic giant golem lightly tapped the area around their waist.
Noticing, the first generation looked over to see Drexler’s magic giant golem pointing at the side of the carriage.
“What’s that about… Tch, these ‘imitation’ can’t speak, can they? What a defective product!!”
Despite throwing out the curse, they looked at the pointed location. It seemed a thin board had been attached to the side and was peeling off.
“Huh? What’s going on? Hey, peel this off for me.”
The fingers of the first generation were quite thick, making them unsuitable for delicate work.
Following the command, Drexler’s second generation began to peel off the peeling board, revealing a beautifully painted surface underneath.
As they confirmed the entire appearance by peeling off board after board, the man who had given the instructions was left speechless.
It was clearly not a carriage for an ordinary merchant.
“This is a noble’s carriage… I’ve seen that emblem somewhere before…”
Another man on a different first generation stared at the emblem on the carriage for a moment, thinking.
“!! I remember! This is the emblem of Marquis Felker from the neighboring Staleen Kingdom!”
The Felker territory is located at the border with Plazzo, so he must have remembered it from the flag at the fort.
“But why go through the trouble of disguising it…? No, first, we must report this to the general. Hey, ‘imitation’! You can hear our voices, can’t you?”
In response to the man’s question, Drexler’s magic giant golem nodded.
“Then you convey this information. The control seat is over there, so you can manage it, right?”
Again, it nodded.
“Ha! Even ‘imitations’ can be useful in situations like this. Now, I wonder if the squad leader is alright.”
Saying this sarcastically, the two first generations headed towards the one that had become immobile after being hit by Samuel’s magic.
Beside them, Isamu’s machine assumed a parked stance and disconnected the magic power pass for a situation report.
