Chapter 5: Fighting Monster

“Now… time to go.”

Midnight.

Taking advantage of the quiet moment when everyone in the mansion was asleep, Rest left the stable.

The mansion’s lights had already been extinguished.

The only illumination for Resto’s path was the light of the three moons – red, blue, and yellow – hanging in the night sky.

Looking up at the three moons, Restoonce again felt the reality of being in a different world.

“[Night Vision].”

Activating the magic, his vision instantly brightened. The magic allowed him to see through the dark night, providing a clear view of the surroundings as if it were daytime.

This magic was not taught by Cedric.

While most of the magic that Rest has mastered, especially attack magic, was learned through training with Cedric, there are also several other spells that he can use.

“Night Vision” was taught to Rest when he was living alone with his mother. It was learned from a middle-aged man who would always sit in the back alleys, drinking. Rest doesn’t know much about this man who taught him magic in exchange for bread. However, he was grateful to him because he was able to learn magic like “Night Vision,” “Unlock,” and “Life Search” thanks to him, in exchange for bread.

(It’s probably better not to think about what kind of person he was…)

(Now… where are the magical creatures?)

Rest reached the entrance of the forest. The densely growing trees blocked the moonlight, creating a dark abyss within the forest.

If not for the magic, Rest wouldn’t have been able to see a meter ahead, making walking impossible.

(Monsters… are they over here?)

Using [Life Search], he searched for monsters. He discovered the presence of three monsters near the forest entrance.

Quietly approaching, Rest observed a three-eyed wolf feasting on something.

(The one being eaten is… a goblin?)

The wolves were devouring a creature with green skin, resembling a monkey. It was a monster known as a “goblin.” Although a familiar creature in fantasy, the sight of a humanoid being devoured, exposing bones and internal organs, was not pleasant.

“Guru?”

One of the wolves engrossed in the goblin’s meat raised its head, making searching movements as if sensing its surroundings.

It might have noticed Rest from his smell or presence.

(Must strike first…!)

“[Thunderball].”

Emerging from the shadow of the trees, Rest cast the recently learned magic. The ball of lightning struck one of the wolves, causing its large body to convulse violently.

“Grrr!?”

“Gaw!”

“Gah!”

Seeing their comrade in distress, the other two wolves leaped towards Rest. Calmly and without panic, he launched another lightning ball.

“[Thunderball].”

“Gyan!”

The second lightning ball also hit a wolf. About to launch a third one, the wolf attacked him.

“Aaaargh!”

“Kuh…!”

Reacting quickly, he dodged to the side, avoiding the claws, but a red line was etched on his arm. Although pain threatened to contort his expression, panicking now would play into the enemy’s hands.

(Disarrayed emotions lead to disarrayed magic. Stay calm… stay calm…)

“[Thunderball].”

“Grrr!?”

Calmly, he released the lightning, hitting the remaining wolf. Relieved, he exhaled and checked the three fallen wolves.

“Grrr…l…”

“Ah… they’re still alive.”

It seemed that [Thunderball] wasn’t a particularly lethal magic. The shocked wolves were immobilized, but all three were still alive.

“I’ll finish them off… [Wind Cutter].”

Sending blades of wind, Rest severed the necks of the three wolves. Blood gushed out, spreading on the ground.

([Thunderball] has a pretty fast attack speed. It’s not entirely useless. If I increase the magic power output, the power should increase too… needs practice.)

“Gi! Gi!”

“Oh… you guys again.”

A different monster emerged from the bushes – a goblin with a body the size of a child.

Whether it came to help its fallen comrades or detected the scent of blood, the goblin, holding a rusty knife-like object, glared at Rest.

“Gigi! Gigi!”

“I didn’t kill your friends. No need to glare like that.”

“Grr!”

“Moreover… your surprise attack has been exposed.”

Rest leaped to the side, and a goblin with a club, emerging from behind, swung it down to the spot Rest had been just moments ago.

“Ggi!?”

“If I didn’t have [Life Search], it could have been dangerous. Time to return the favor!”

Using [Body Strengthening], he increased his strength and kicked the goblin that had ambushed him. The goblin, intended to attack Rest from behind, was detected thanks to [Life Search]. The kicked goblin flew and crashed into a tree trunk.

“Grr!”

“[Water Blade]”

Aiming at the first goblin, Rest released a blade of water. The goblin, trying to flee with its back turned to its fallen comrade, was cut in the back and fell. As a precaution, Rest cast another spell to ensure its demise.

“Hmph!”

“G…ii…”

Turning his attention to the goblin that had crashed into a tree, Rest delivered a follow-up. With his body magically enhanced, he stomped on the goblin’s head, completely crushing it. The skull shattered, and the goblin’s head turned into a mushy mess like a broken egg. It was a rather splatter-filled scene, but Rest was already accustomed to it.

Goblins were monsters that attacked livestock and occasionally kidnapped human children to eat. There was no sympathy for them.

“Now, the battle is finally over.”

Scanning for any remaining signs of creatures, there seemed to be no magic presence nearby. Rest used magic to heal the arm torn by the wolf.

“[Healing]”

Wrapped in a faint green light, the wound closed. This magic, too, was not taught by Cedric. Before being taken in by the Ebern Honorary Viscount family, he learned it from a temple priest.

The priest, who diagnosed Rest with “no magic power” when he was still a baby, taught him healing magic.

“There are diseases that magic can’t cure. Your mother has been called to the goddess’s side.”

The priest, always caring for Rest and his mother, was the one who stayed with them until the end, witnessing Rest’s mother’s passing.

When it was discovered that Rest, who was supposed to have “no magic power,” could use magic, there was no doubt or questioning. It was readily accepted as the will of the goddess.

Furthermore, she taught him magic such as “Heal” and “Cure,” as well as “Cleanse.”

“Even if it’s tough, the goddess is always watching over us. Please live a righteous life, not straying from the path.”

(If I hadn’t met him, I might have used this power more recklessly…)

He might have acted out of anger, killing his stepmother or Cedric. He might have harbored hatred for the father who hurt and cast away his mother.

(Maybe, if he hadn’t met him, he could have sought revenge more directly. With this magic power…)

Despite defeating five magic creatures with magic, Rest felt no depletion in his magic power. Indeed, he seemed to possess an almost bottomless well of magic power.

(But… if I seek revenge, it might sadden Mother and the priest. That’s something I shouldn’t do.)

Someone in his past life once said… the greatest revenge is to find happiness.

I won’t resort to violent means for revenge. I’ll achieve it through legitimate methods.

Make his father, stepmother, and Cedric speechless, not through crime but through fair means.

(For that… I need to train my magic more and more!)

Rest used magic to sense his surroundings and continued searching for magic creatures in the night forest.
